Well, I am glad that is over.

Now the most likely successor to Platner is former state senator Troy Jackson. (looks like he has already filed paperwork indicating he plans to run.) He seems to be the ideal candidate:

- In a recent poll, it was shown that he would beat Susan Collins in a head to head race. (All other potential candidates they tested would either tie her or lose.) Admittedly this was a rather quick poll (probably with a smaller sample size), but it is a good sign

- He has just lost a race to become governor. This means that he is 1) available, and 2) he already has a team available that can help him in his campaign

- He inhabits the same part of the political spectrum as Platner (even getting endorsements from Bernie Sanders), so hopefully former Platner supporters will not look at him and say "he's just some moderate establish Democrat they are pushing on us"

- Since he has run for office before, it is less likely he has any skeletons in his closet

Frankly he seems so ideal, its almost like there was a conspiracy to get him picked in the first place, and that Platner was just a placeholder until Jackson could be put in place.

That is the rumor. But, that might not necessarily be the case.

...the current law is supposed to indeed trigger a special election to occur–but because the midterms are already on the horizon, there's essentially no realistic chance that this would happen, as having two elections in close proximity with each other would no doubt cause great confusion in the voter base. Also, a special election in this instance would be only to fill the seat until the term ends in January–the other election would still be necessary to determine the new holder of the office from January onward.

So there are a lot of questions... why are they keeping his health status a secret? Why did his wife decide to go on a trip to China when Moscow mitch was sick?

ETA: Maybe we should refer to him as Shrodenger's Mitch... not sure if he is alive or dead at any point

It's as if the GOP legislation in KY knew ahead of time:

Under a 2024 Kentucky law (House Bill 622), U.S. Senate vacancies must be filled through a special election rather than by an interim gubernatorial appointment.
If a vacancy occurs:
  • Special Election: The governor must call a special election, and the winner serves the remainder of the unexpired term.
  • State Party Nominations: Rather than a traditional primary election, the state's political party executive committee of the vacating senator dictates the nominee who runs in the special election.
  • Narrow Timeline Exceptions: If the vacancy happens within 56 days of a regularly scheduled November general election, the seat remains empty until that regularly scheduled election

It should be noted that law directly contradicts the Kentucky state constitution, which explicitly gives the governor the right to appoint a replacement to finish the term. Granted, with just a few weeks until the end of the term, I doubt Beshear will bother suing or anything.

Most likely, that's exactly why they're stalling. Beshear would probably appoint the present Democratic nominee, Charles Booker, and send him to Washington with legal credentials to be sworn in. This would force the U.S. Senate leadership to accept or deny legal credentials issued by authorization of the Kentucky state constitution.

I think it's likely that McConnell is alive but only because he's on life support. I wouldn't put it past these son of a bitch bastards to keep him that way right through the November election.

August 3rd is a deadline for triggering a special eleciton.
 
I know its beating a dead horse at this point (given the fact that Platner has already withdrawn) but there is yet another allegation against planter... that he tried to pull a "Jullan Assange"....

The rise in gas prices over the past two days will play in the Dems favor, even if the prices go down before the election. Most people hate insecurity, and energy prices, thanks to Trump, are vary insecure.

I really hate to say "I hope gas prices remain high and inflation increases"... But, one of the concerns I have is that oil prices will start to decrease in the late summer (once Trump has finished grovelling to Iran). Voters will forget that Trump CAUSED the increase in prices in the first place and somehow give him credit for the decrease.

Yes I know that he was unpopular before the Iran war. But that conflict did increase accelerate the drop in his approval ratings. I don't want to see that drop reversed. (Even if he wasn't well liked before the war, it is better for the democrats for him to have "really high disapproval" ratings compared to just "high disapproval".)
