Platner doesn't matter. None of this matters.
Democrats will win the 2026 elections and Republicans will cheat to control the House and Senate.
My country is ◊◊◊◊◊◊.
I'm the anit-pollyanna!
That's right, just give up?
Frankly, your whole grumpy old man shtick has been old for along time.
And this is too serious a matter for shtick.

If Platner goes, then the Dems have a real talking point:We get rid of the creeps who sneak into our party, the GOP makes them president and worships them.

But the party establishment is so horrifically bad at reading its voters that it keeps putting up corporatist dDems in the mould of Ray-Gun or Shrub*, hence why Platner got so much traction despite having so many red flags. He was willing to talk the talk that ordinary Democratic party voters need to hear.

You're objecting to the kind ofe economic and social policies that millions of drowning Americans need if they are ever going to survive.

*i.e. a hairs-breadth to the left of current GOP policy, but circumspect enough not to shout it from the rooftops.
Jesus christ on a cracker, the whole "moderate/centrist Democrats are almost identical to republicans" is such an idiotic argument.

Lets look at (for example) Biden (someone who is seen as a fairly moderate democrat) and compare him to the current iteration of the GOP....

Biden increased funding for green energy programs. GOP cut green energy programs and are pushing fossil fuels.
Biden appointed a judge to the bench who voted to keep roe v. wade, Trump's judges all voted against roe v. wade.
Biden proposed a tax increase on high income earners and corporations. Republicans cut corporate taxes.
Biden attempted to provide limited student loan debt relief. Republicans nuked it.
Biden expanded the number of people covered under Obamacare. Under Trump the number of people covered has been dropping, and medicare has been severely cut.

Notice the significant differences between the parties? Things would have been radically different had a republican been in charge instead of Biden.

Ok, Biden's expansion of Obamacare wasn't exactly the "medicare for all/single payer" that progressives want, and his student loan debt relief wasn't the "free college" that the far left wants, but they are noting like the republican plans for health care or education.

Now, there may be legitimate discussions on how fast the democrats should go in pushing left-wing policies, but anyone suggesting "Moderate Democrats are almost like republicans" makes a person sound less like a rational person who wants a reasonable discussion on policy, and more like and edgy teen who got their political views from a North Korean youtube video that was translated by Russian bots, and they are saying things just to piss of their parents.

Oh, and by the way, Moderate democrats in the form of Clinton, Biden, and to a lesser extent Obama have won elections. In fact, going back to the mid-90s, there has only been 1 election (Bush in 2004) where the republicans have actually won a clear victory (winning both in the popular vote AND in the electoral college). In every other election, either Democrats outright won (e.g. Biden over Trump), Won the popular vote but lost the electoral college (e.g. Trump vs. Clinton, Bush vs. Gore), or at the very least kept the republican from getting a majority (Trump vs. Harris). Its only because republicans appeal to people in states with more cows than people that they have maintained any power. That's pretty good for a bunch of people who you claim "don't know how to read voters".

I have a little more optimism that that.

Yes, I recognize that the republicans will attempt to cheat (such as gerrymandering). And in fact some of their efforts will be effective, but I think the backlash against Trump will still see republicans lose at least the house.

As for what happens after? I think the courts have been somewhat functional in dealing with this. (Remember, Trump lost dozens of cases when he tried to challenge the 2020 election. Even the supreme court refused to hear his cases.). Could Trump still do an end-run and bypass the courts to retain power? Perhaps, but I think there will be a few republicans who will not support him in this, either because they still have a shred of integrity (admittedly a very small number, but a few probably exist), or because they recognize that blocking a legitimately-elected legislature might result in a violent uprising, and this would affect the economy.

I suspect the wealthy people in the country will think a country that is NOT fighting a civil war is better for their bank accounts than one where they may have a friendly republican government but one where police and the military are dealing with millions of protesters (some of whom are now armed.)

The risk of Gerrymandering is that it works both ways: a district that is build to be reliably 55% Red can be flipped if enough Republicans just stay home for whatever reason and Dems actually manage to turn out the vote.

It is quite possible for gerrymandering to fail spectacularly. And I certainly hope it does.

My concern isn't so much for the 2026 midterms (or even the 2028 general election), but for elections past 2030, when you don't have an unpopular Trump dragging down the republican party and the gerrymandering has more of an impact.

Even the anti-Trump NYC jury didn't find that he raped her.
Because under the technical definition of "rape" in New York State law, it did not qualify. It was deemed "sexual abuse". However, the judge said anyone would recognize it as rape.
On July 19, 2023, Judge Kaplan found that Trump did rape her as the term is understood "in common modern parlance", although not "in the narrow, technical meaning of a particular section of the New York Penal Law".
Even pro-rape Trump supporters (i guess that is a redundancy) can recognize that.

I devoutly hope you are right. But I'm scared.

Like accusations of hypicrosy has ever concerned the GOP. "It's different because....(no real difference)".

Guess that can be said for both sides.

Platner is out. Just quit.
I read that his suspension yesterday was an attempt to bargain with the Maine Democrats; He would go if he could have a major role in selecting his sucessor. guess he wanted to be Warwick the Kingmaker if he could not be King. The Main Dems told him, from what I have read, to go to hell,,quite rightly. Planter right now is the kiss of death, and Platner finally got that the jig was up and quit.
