Hi im new here and dont know if i am posting this in the right place so sorry if it is wrong.

Ok i have a friend that is always going on about 2012 and that the end of the world is going to happen then
She never explains it in full and i am a bit perplexed by it. Can any one explain this to me and tell me there views on this.
Do you believe this is true?????

Thanks

Your friend is likely referring to the fact that the Mayan calendar, created several thousand years ago and found to be fairly accurate by most scientists I believe, comes to an abrupt halt in September (I think; please someone correct me if I'm wrong) 2012. It's not a definitive measure of the world ending by any means, but people seize on it as evidence that the apocalypse is coming. Hope that helps.

Actually the date for the end is December 21, 2012.

As was said, your friend is referring to the Mayan calendar. It's completely ridiculous and the best response to anyone claiming the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world is to ask how in the world the Maya could know that (presumably the only response will be that the Maya must have been in contact with aliens/ghosts/demons/crab people or have been psychic...or something...).

The calendar works in cycles. At the end of each cycle, the calendar starts over. It seems not even the Maya thought it would be the "end of the world" just "the end of the era" and the next era would start right after it. Completely harmless, don't lose sleep over it.

It is in reference to the end of the very accurate Mayan Calender of 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan Long Count, which is December 21st, 2012 A.D. .
You will find some background information located here with references.

There is speculation that the literal end of the world will take place via some great cataclysm. This of course is open to interpretation.

Allow your friend to put her money where her delusions are. Suggest that she sign a legal document transferring all her assets to you on January 1, 2013 when she obviously will no longer need them.

That'll shut her up.

Look on the bright side. If 12/21/2012 is the end of the world, it means that whoever is elected in November will be the last President we'll ever have to deal with.

Maybe it'll end up being her fault? ;)

ETA: Technically, there could be a new President Elect for a couple months there. Certainly another election cycle.

I highly doubt your friend has an honestly sincere belief about this, though. I've found the "end worlders" claim that the world will end on a certain date, yet save money for retirement, have long-term plans and etc that go beyond that date.

The most amazing thing, to me, about the mayan "doomsday calender" nonsense is how wrong it turned out to be.

The largest portion of the Mayan world came to an end with the conquest of most of the mayan lands around 1546 A.D. by the Spanish. The Spanish subsequently stamped out whatever they could of the mayan culture and religion, replacing them with thier own.

There was a small Mayan holdout that remained independent until it too was stamped out by the spanish in 1697.

So depending on interpretation, the mayan doomsday is off by somewhere between 315 to 470 years.

There is speculation that the literal end of the world will take place via some great cataclysm. This of course is open to interpretation.

Strange invaders coming in ships from a far off place that you never knew existed, with weapons technology far in advance of your own annihilating your culture and enslaving your people sounds pretty frakking cataclysmic to me.

You could ask the Maya who were there when it happened if it meets their definition of "cataclysm" but they've been dead for more than 300 years.

thanks that has cleared it up for me a bit i will have to get my friend to hav a read at this though and try to get her to see reason.

I caught a portion of the doomsday predictions of Van Impe last night. He is using the 2012 date to hawk more DVDs.

I have to wonder why Mayan Calendar "end of world" people think that since a calendar doesn't continue, neither will the world.

Hi

The Mayan calendar makers probably got to 2012, ran into some glitch in the calculations and said, "let's release the thing anyhow! We have a few hundred years, so we can always come back with a patch or version 2.0." :D :duck: :flamed:

I'm pretty sure you're off by a hundred years......

According to Rush, (that fantastic Canadian trio) the year will be 2112.....

although I must admit, there are no suggestions of the "end of the world"........it was a beotchin' album........and better on that damn acid of the 70's.

I predict my world will end within the next 30 years........depends on whether I get the Cancer, or the Heart Attack.

Happy Trails....;)

December 21 2012 will be the day after my son turns 18. In this country 18 is the legal drinking age. If he is anything like his old man, I can imagine he'll be making the most of his 18th birthday and hoping he can avoid a hangover. Personally, I hope his hangover is as excruciating as mine was.

I can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned Nostradamus, people think Nostradamus predicted this year also in his "Lost Book."

Satan's Rapture
2012 End of Days - Haha, Nostradamus said 1999! Ohhhhhh, burn.
There are loads of 2012 apocalypse sites on the net.

No I don't believe it, but whatever happens, one group of people is going to totally LOL at the other group of people - either the 2012 believers will LOL at me or the other way around and from where I am it looks like their predictions are going to end up like every other apocalypse scare - so I'm prepared to LMAO.

Welcome lauras, I'm fairly new too and I can say people here are extremely welcoming.

Your friend is misinformed. The world will actually end in 2038, on Tuesday, 19th January, just before 3:15 AM GMT.

My computer says so, so it must be true.
