2012 Debates

So, when the dust settles, who will emerge victorious, The Smirker or The Stammerer?

Well, I don't think we need the dust to settle at all. It's pretty obvious that Romney didn't get that huge knockout he needed and without that he is in trouble....

So it doesn't really matter who "won" this debate, Obama is the winner for just holding his own.

Romney wants to invest in small business, but he just slammed Obama for investing in green business.

What a two faced tool

Interesting to hear Romney finally address the question of his lack of details as to how he intends to do the things he wants to do.

Namely that he has no details. His plan is to go to congress and repeat his general principles and then figure out how to get it done.

I can't imagine how that should appeal to anyone. I would equate it him with him saying that he has no idea how to get it done, and that he in fact does not know if it's even possible.

*edit to add:

I haven't watched this debate but it sounds to me like Obama hasn't pressed the advantage that he should do which was to point out Romney offers nothing re: healthcare.

On another thread I suggested that Obama should force this issue and say "What are you going to do?" Obama could point out all the ways in which Obamacare would insure people with pre-existing conditions etc.. etc... and then say, "So you want to get rid of it?" then, "What are you going to replace it with?" then "So, you used to be for healthcare when you were governer? Then you were against it and now what are you for? Nobody knows! Not even you! And all you are promoting tonight is your conviction that you won't lead on this..." etc... etc...

Why didn't Obama do this?

yawn I don't think there's much chance of many people still watching.

paraphrase -

I'd make a better President because I'd have Democrats in the minority instead of Republicans that would need to cooperate with me.

Humm

He was hammering on the green business stuff earlier... right after saying how he was for green business... I gotta hand it to the guy, he is constant in his inconsistency.

What I found most shocking is that Obama named 3 separate instances of a lack of details coming out of Romney:

- Tax changes offset by closing loopholes and exemptions
- Repeal Dodd Frank and replace it with something better
- Repeal Obamacare and replace it with something better

And Romney flat out admitted that he had no details as to how he would do any of those things. :jaw-dropp

He's an idiot.

Between that and the Romney Smirk, I think he just blew it. Well, allow me to clarify: by "blew it", I mean that he blew his chance at scoring any kind of knockout against President Obama. If Obama came across as stuttering, etc in the debate, Romney could have really made some headway, but he had to have the damn Smirk on his face the whole time. Which basically screams "I'm an arrogant jerk".

Moron.

I stand by my earlier prediction. Those coming into this supporting one candidate or the other will leave supporting that same candidate.

Not watching the debate but reading the comments here is hilarious.

I think he just did.

Ouch the had to hurt.

Hey, no fair making fun of the guy's religion. Oh... I see... you didn't say Mormon. Sorry.

Nice to see that Obama did recognize that he scored a major point. To the question of how to overcome the stalemate in congress and work together he said (or words to the effect):

"... and I believe a leader has to come to the table with an actual plan, and not just show up at the table... "

I feel the debate winner is tough to call. I don't see a clear winner.
Besides the issues I had with Romney, Obama needed to garner confidence in his performance going forward. And while his stammering had nothing to do with content, it knocked some points off his confidence.

So... hard to call. If when Romney had sad "I have no plan to cut education", Obama had come back with "Yes, it doesn't seem you have much of a plan for anything", it would have been a knock-out.

If the media tomorrow picks up on the no-details-just-principles comment, the Obama pulls ahead here. If not, I think the next poll numbers will either be unchanged, or maybe an uptick for Romney.

Romney back in June:
[Obama] says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It's time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.

Romney tonight:
I reject the idea that I don't believe in great teachers or more teachers...
