The JREF idea of Reality

How about discussing the complex role of fungi in our biosphere?
That would be pretty cool. I'd sure like to learn more about that.

I'm always game for ants, too. I know more about them than the fungi. But who doesn't?
The fungi thing is way strange and big, and we don't know anywhere near enough about it.

If I read the thread title correctly, this could be an almost unique, wide open science thread. I've always wanted one of these; a place to drop an occasional idea or link of interest; maybe it doesn't deserve its own thread; yet it deserves a mention.

Bisecting a mobious strip, length wise is pretty cool. Stuff like that.

Can we mods?
Oh please?

Ants and fungi all in one (Ask and ye shall receive!): http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/03/080324173459.htm

and others - big deal!!

Also, make further center line cut on your paper moebius for more surprises!!! (That is, bisect it and then biosect the result of the first bisection. First, though, see if you can predict what will happen at the end of the second bisection.

Or, take and 8.5 X 11 sheet of copy paper and cut a hole in it big enough for you to walk through standing (i.e a hole/rectangle app 6' X2.5' X6' X 2.5' or, about 17' in circumference. That's the first and easy part!:D Then, take another piece the same size and cut a hole in ing large enouigh for 7-10 people to walk through standing side by side (62' circumference). No taping, gluing or any such is allowed - only cutting.

Oh, my 10th/11th grade chem class record (for the last 8 years) was 21 students walking through side by side. That was a single hole circumference app. 117'. First and only hint: fold the paper in half before you start cutting the hole. And, back in the late 30's/early 40's Robert Ripley in one of his theatrical shorts showed how to do it. Business card - woman passed through. Old bar bet.

Let's add mereological nihilism into the mix!

There is no JREF, for this "thing" you are referring to, like Soylent Green, is just made of people.

As you might guess, folks that are inclined to bisect mobious strips are inclined to bisect them again.
As well as cutting the big hole.
I'm all about that sort of nerdum.

Convex miniscus; floating the needle; stroking the florescent light tube with a sweater in a dark closet...geez, that sounds kinky now...dragging a magnet across a tv screen: That's my kind of thrill. Soylent green is cool too. I wonder if it comes in a vegetarian form?

I believe it does, although you can never be sure if people are telling you the truth about being vegetarian before you grind them up.

at the end of the day the JREF... has nothing to do with debate or science. It is an endeavour of a policing, ruling class, neurotically exploiting popularity through the surge of popularity in science.
This is so true!

Of course the JREF isn't interested in debate or science. It's mission is to destroy the reputations of woo purveyors, by tricking them into agreeing to a test protocol that guarantees they will lose. There will be no debate over the results, and 'science' is only used to keep the $1M firmly out of reach. And if you don't like those terms and turn down the 'challenge'? Then you get labeled a fraud! :boggled:

Congratulations on seeing through the charade. No doubt you will now be viciously attacked by the regulars here, as they consider it their mission to tear apart anybody who doesn't toe the anti-woo line and/or dares to expose the true nature of the JREF.

For the JREF there is no distinction between science or mysticism... Without an idea, mission, purpose or philosophy to its facts... the JREF is doing philosophy by offering pragmatism as science... The JREF was never pro-science or anti-mystical... The JREF is a sexed-up feudal pragmatism
This is all codswallop! Why is it that every defender of woo has to fill their posts up with rubbish like this? It diminishes the value of your arguments and makes you sound like an idiot. It's almost like you don't want us to take you seriously.

Or perhaps that is it. The neurotic ruling classes who run the JREF know that sooner or later someone will figure out their little scheme, so they set up fake user accounts and post ridiculous stuff that nobody in their right mind would defend, making it look like anybody who believes in woo is an idiot. I bet Jonesboy is another one of those fake accounts, right? A poe deliberately created to make the JREF look good and woos look bad. :(

So 'Jonesboy', it's time to come clean.

You're one of THEM, aren't you?

;)

Yowza, Roger. That post had a twisted brand of awesome.

Should I be frightened?
