This story gets weirder and weirder every time it passes in front of my eyes in the news media. Here's the latest story:

Teenager’s Instagram ‘mysteriously accessed since vanishing’ in Tenerife

Questions people are asking:

Why does nobody mention the fact that he's a violent criminal who was recently convicted of a machete attack on someone?

https://www.lancs.live/news/lancashire-news/eight-teens-who-split-boys-27456859

why does the friend who he phoned the day he disappeared get interviewed without allowing her face to appear on screen?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3ggj8zv62zo

Why is the Facebook group dedicated to find him so hilarious?

https://www.facebook.com/groups/395447583507203

I have a feeling there's one person in this forum who will have the answers....

Hallo. I don't understand why this is front page news. I hope he is found safe and well and all the best to his family, but there is nothing unusual about some teenager going out for a weekend and then seeming to vanish for a few days. The way they are going on, you'd think Tenerife was a third world country with no police, no transport, wild animals and no communications.

People go 'missing' all the time. This is non-news off the back of Dr. Michael Mosely, which was news as he was a well-known figure.

I know nothing about this except for the fact that everybody is asking why nobody has mentioned he's a violent criminal who tried to split a youth's head with a machete.

Those will be the thousands of bot porn sites jamming Twitter.

I have a question.

Why does the Sid Vicious tattoo on Jay's father's arm look more like Gary Glitter than Sid?

I have a question.

Why does the Sid Vicious tattoo on Jay's father's arm look more like Gary Glitter than Sid?

The hairstyle does look more Gary Glitter. Hard to make out the eyebrows. The clothing also looks Gary Glitter in his Rock'n'Roll days: bare chest, big fancy belt and bootees. But the boots bother me as Glitter wore them stacked. These look more like motor cycle boots, popular with punks like Sid Vicious.

What could be worse, a paedophile or a murderer...?

If it is another Shannon Matthews case, as the trolls are cruelly saying, perhaps police will find him hiding under someone's bed.

I think the 98% likelihod is he was drunk and high, and set off to walk through inhospitable terrain without a phone or water, and fell and died. Very sad for his family.

The 2% is that this is all a hoax and he's in hiding in a Karen Matthews-style cash grab. The GoFundMe that was set up has reached over £30k, the lad's mother keeps being added and removed from being a beneficiary, and nobody seems to really explain what the money is going to be used for (other than a Gucci handbag).

The madness of people in facebook groups suggesting he's been picked up by eagles or has swum to Lanzarote, and recommending people lay glowstick or ket trails (just to mention a few of the saner ideas), only go to show that it's sometimes impossible to distinguish crazy from satire.

True. I will revise my probabilities.

98% he's had a tragic accident/is stuck to a cactus because he wasn't thinking clearly, 1% he's been done in by the Moroccan drug dealers (or maybe Lucy) and 1% that he's under someone's bed waiting for the GFM to hit £40k.

According to his mum ("He's such a handsome lad"), as soon as she arrived in Lanzarote she received a kidnap demand. Don't ask how the kidnappers got her number. Unless, of course, they had his phone in their possession. Thus, the £30K GoFundMe is an urgent appeal for the ransom money to free the poor vulnerable mite, who has nothing at all to do with getting on the wrong side of drug dealers or vanishing with the gear. And the bloody useless police can't speak English.

Does any of that come from primary sources or is it all from Facebook posts beginning with "I heard that..."?

Strangely, from UK national newspapers. And now, Maddie-hunter, Mark Williams-Thomas has offered to help the search. He is well-known as being Jimmy Saville's nemesis.

All we need now is the other guy, Peter Faulding, to wade in.

Sounds familiar doesn't it.

Oh, and also according to the Mail (not a great source but they seem to be really running with it) the kidnapping (taken against his will) claim isn't based on anything more than "otherwise someone would have found him". There's no mention of a call from kidnappers and the Spanish Police aren't treating it seriously according to this article.

The mother's kidnapping claim and sinister phone communication are as reported here:

Speaking as the third day of searching starts to come to a close, mum Debbie said: ‘There’s no ransom demand come in yet but I got a Snapchat about 10 minutes after I got off the plane saying “kiss goodbye to your boy, you’re never going to see him again, he owes me a lot of money” which I passed on to police with the number it came from because I had my wits about me at the time and got my eldest son Zac to take a screen grab before it disappeared.

That will be brought up if they find him, especially if he shows up alive, there will be day, isn't this awesome that he's alive? then weeks of, what a **** bag, he should have died.

You call those "kidnap demands"?

The Facebook group is getting a psychic in tonight:

EXCLUSIVE
We have the world-renowned Australian Psychic Medium ‘Rochelle’ LIVE ON THE GROUP- Live at 9pm tonight!

Not that I want to give these charlatans any credit, but it will be interesting to see them (probably) avoid all the crime accusations and focus on which particular body of water Slater is close to. I think the key to finding him is understanding a little more about his state of mind at the time, which I would imagine a cold-reader would be better at that than the common clay of the North West who are posting on FB currently, but not better than the police I would hope. It also seems like enough time has passed for this person to commune with Google Earth and apply some logic and guesses.

My guess is that he took the road both NW and SE and saw that in both directions the road snakes up daunting mountains. He was too cocky/proud to ask for a lift, or wait 2hrs for a bus. He saw the sea to the SW about 2 miles away, and instinctively felt that was the safe way to go and that he would find a busy beach down there and some busier bus routes. After an increasingly gruelling descent through the ravines, he got caught in a sunk cost trap, and kept pressing on, leaving himself a huge scramble back uphill. When he got to the beach, Playa de Juan Lopez, he found out that it's tiny and cut off by cliffs on both sides. That would be pretty devastating after he's been walking for 2-3 hours. He may have thought he could scramble around one of them to the next beach but they are massive and very dangerous. If he tried it, he probably fell in the sea.

According to your own source she said "There’s no ransom demand."

...'yet'. 'No ransom demand yet.'

Kidnapping ipso facto demands secrecy. 'Hand us a ransom or the kid gets it'

'Notify the cops and he's toast'.

The last thing a kidnapper would want to see is a posse of tabloid journalists and paparazzi peering in through the basement window.

The alternative is to set up a Go Fund Me to raise the ransom money.

It doesn't really follow, does it? If he was being kidnapped for ransom, why would the person claiming to hold him say "you're never going to see him again"?

That's his mother's view, not my view. She claimed that is what the snapchat told her when she got off the plane. But where did the malicious communicator get her number from? Either it was genuine and came from someone holding Slater or it was someone who had her number and thought it a great prank!

Obviously, family and friends will want the story to continue as long as possible, but for the media it's no longer news. For all we know he might pop up tomorrow or be discovered a couple of years from now by some random hiker (with better navigational skills).

I've never used Snapchat but from what I can see its a social media app with searchable public profiles so you don't need to know somebody's number.

That's not a kidnapping message: it's a "he crossed me so I'm going to kill/have killed him message".

I think it's a cruel hoax and Jay Slater is at the bottom of the ravine he fell in.

I don't think he's kidnapped. He seems to have been involved in underworld activity, and Lancashire county drugs lines seems to be quite prolific owing to, (a) illicit drugs shipments arriving around the Blackpool area, (b) the drug cartel bosses needing people to distribute the drugs on the streets, and what could be more convenient than (c) cash strapped youths, such as apprentice bricklayer, Jay Slater and his gangster machete, baseball bat and weapons-wielding chums to do this stuff. Slater would have known it was dodgy given that he himself went after that young guy as part of a gang leaving their victim for dead (which he was not, thanks to a fifteen-year-old girl throwing herself over him to protect him, being more of a 'man' than the nine-member gang).

Yes, a lot of street violence in NW England - see the young girl shot on her doorstep and the young woman shot as she fled to her garden - as armed gangsters fell out over who stole whose cache of gear or welshed on their debts.

Jay Slater's parents know their son was involved int his stuff. They knew straight away he may have come to a sticky end but they could hardly spell it out to the mass media, being the stigma that it is. So now it has come out that he may have stolen a Rolex from some 'Eastern European' type (translated: thick necked foreign criminal with ill-gotten gains) and that he had been showing it off in the car he went off in with those two middle-aged guys. One guy has been identified, and well, well, well, it turns out he is a convicted drug smuggler who received a nine-year sentence. Seems to me Jay Slater went off with these two guys because he smelt a lucrative drug deal or some other such malarky.

Personally, I think he is in hiding, scared to come out because a whole bunch of violent villains are after him because he double -crossed them or stole their gear.

You never met a conspiracy you couldn't conjure out of thin air.

'Ex-murder squad cop Bleksley' agrees with me:

"This island is so heavily dependent upon tourism, is there reluctance on behalf of the police to actually delve as deep as they should into the murky world where we know there are drugs.

"We know that Tenerife, other Spanish islands and the Costas in southern Spain are heavily populated by criminals, organised criminals from the Russian mafia to local criminals, to British gangsters and more.
