Our slow broadband speeds are as much a result of politics as they are of isolation. A couple of elections ago, each of the two parties had a plan for national broadband service. The conservative Liberal Party had one that was slower but cheaper. Labor had one that was fast but expensive. For other reasons the Liberals won that election and started to roll out their Fiber To The Node system which relied on existing copper to transmit data to individual houses. Problem was, the existing copper sucked balls. So for the moment at least, we're stuck with crappy broadband.More seriously, it's my understanding that Australia is stuck with rather a bottleneck, accessing the rest of the global Internet. But that wouldn't really affect software prices, just data rates and wait times for downloading software from abroad.
