    Pope Leo XIV

New pope, new pope thread, same old Catholic Church. "Pope Leo XIV (born Robert Francis Prevost; September 14, 1955) is the bishop of Rome, head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. He was elected pope in the 2025 papal conclave on May 8, following the death and...

Merged Pope Francis health concerns / Pope Francis has died age 88

The Pope declares evolution and the Big Bang real!

The current Pope has shown himself to be a quite rational, deep-thinking sort of person, whose views on science and the scientific process I admire. Recently he said: “When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand and able to do...

Information Request > Catholic Church and Exorcism

Hello all! There is an issue which I am having trouble documenting and I hope that someone at JREF may be able to help me out a bit. Specifically, last night at dinner I got into a debate about exorcisms where I said something like “the Catholic Church does indeed still preform exorcisms and...

    Name the New Pope Thread

So, what name will the new Pope take? I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this. If there is, feel free to merge this in. In media speculation about upcoming pope names, I noticed they were all talking about name choices in terms of imitating recent Popes. If he were to be called Benedict...

    The pope's infallibility

Greetings all During a debate about the pope's infallibility and what a crock it is, I was challenged to come up with a single instance of a pope declaring something infallibly (that is, the pope is speaking ex-cathedra, about a matter of faith or religion) and then later being found wrong or...

Should I care what the Pope says about women priests?

Ok so first off I'm an atheist. So this morning I hear that the pope has issued some kind of instruction that women priests and the bishops that ordained them are to be excommunicated. "Misogynistic bastage" Is my first reaction. But then I think "hang on, all their rules are based in fairy...

    Jews offended by Pope

Well, ok. What he says is that any church defined through the claims of the papacy is no true church. MSNBC story. I thought that I would actually go to the source to see what he said. From Rev. Mohler's blog (relevant part roughly 1/2-way down page): Thoughts?

    Masturbation and sin

So, masturbation is supposedly a sin in some religions, right? The supposed rationale for this is that every sperm cell is a potential life and that the seed should not be wasted in an act of selfish pleasure. Or so I learned in Catholic school. (Okay, they didn't actually cover it in Catholic...
