On Sunday
I posted regarding the
Conservative Treehouse echo-chamber claims being passed along here by ABC10 that Donald Sterling is a Democratic fundraiser, a Democratic bundler, a significant donor to the Democratic Party, etc. In that post I concluded that:
1. The claim that Sterling is a Democratic fundraiser appears entirely unsupported.
2. The claim that Sterling is a Democratic contributor appears also to be false; a correct claim would be that 22 years ago Sterling was a Democratic contributor. (Since then he has been even-handed in donating an identical amount of $0 to both parties).
3. As for the claim that Sterling is a Democrat, the Conservative Treehouse article ... cited does not make that claim. (The Daily Caller article which the Conservative Treehouse cites also fails to make that claim.)
It's quite possible Sterling was registered as a Democrat when he made his last recorded contribution to a Democrat in 1991. It's quite possible he is one now. But [the] cited source provides no evidence to support that claim.
I'd like to make two updates to that.
First: thanks to A'isha we now know the claim that Sterling is a Democrat is also false.
Second:
The Daily Beast reports that two more political donations from Donald Sterling have turned up: a $5000 contribution in 2002 to Gray Davis and a $1000 in 2008 to
Californians for Humane Farms (a group which was lobbying in 2008 for passage of
a ballot proposition regarding standards for confining animals.)
The reason these contributions didn't turn up before is that the previous searches referenced used OpenSecrets.org. The OpenSecrets database lists federal contributions; these were state contributions, which can be found by using FollowTheMoney.org.
To see if there was any additional information not included in the Daily Beast article I did the search for myself. Here's a link to the search on
FollowTheMoney. (And for completists here's a link to the
search via the Sunlight Foundation, which includes both the OpenSecrets and FollowTheMoney results.)
Upthread
Stellafane speculated that the donations to Bill Bradley in 1989 might have been based more on the basketball connection than on politics. That's looking more likely to me now as well.
I was intrigued by the Leahy donation, since Leahy is one of the more liberal / progressive politicians. But Leahy, as I noted in a previous post, was on the senate's agriculture committee; the donation to Californians for Humane Farms indicates Sterling had an interest in agricultural matters, and the donation to Leahy could well be tied to that. (And that could explain why Sterling would donate both to Leahy (who was part of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party) and to Bradley (who was part of the centrist wing of the party).
So (speculating) it looks like Sterling donated to Bill Bradley because of the basketball connection, to Patrick Leahy because of the agriculture connection, and to Gray Davis because if you're a California sports team owner it helps to have friends (or, at least, not to have enemies) high up in California government. Apart from that he appears to have had no interest in helping the Democrats -- no contributions to campaigns to take the senate, no contributions to campaigns to take the house, no contributions to win the presidency.
