Apparently, a deal has been struck. It will be interesting to see how this works.

Deal to 'de-escalate' agreed in Geneva

Good news if it is true. Peace in our time and all that...

Why do you think they struck a deal with Russia, and not the east Ukrainian opposition?

You don't find it interesting that Russia agreed to de escalate and abandon all illegal military formations inn Ukrain? Hmm.

And what does this have to do with the leaflets demanding registration of jews?

Why Russia? Well, because obviously it is a player in this conflict. However, why the US and why the EU?

Let's not overreact just yet.

Indeed.

Dugin's opinion that China is a natural enemy of Russia, and his plans for basicaly dismembering it might be one reason why China has sort of put it semi alliance with Putin on hold.

Not according to some sources:

Does anyone here think this could break out into a nuclear conflict?

No.

We all know Putin is insane. But how insane?

Do we "know" Putin is insane? This was bandied about before by people with no evidence or medical qualifications and regularly is. We don't know Putin is anything of the sort.

Meh, so is Kim Jong Il. To a point...

Kim Jong il is dead. Completely dead.

Just to avoid confusion, I am not actually of the opinion that the US and EU should not be involved. It's a good idea to involve them. But it's obviously a good idea to involve Russia as well, especially if they are going to do as they say they will and help to persuade the pro-Russian militias to disarm.

Looks also like a general amnesty and some power-sharing is going to be the carrot for the pro-Russian militias so the idea of putting them on trial for treason is a non-starter.

What's been done three times? I don't see the NYT link posted anywhere, but I only read the last 50 posts or so.

Euromaidan asks Donetsk Rabbi who received the stuff, CNN reports it with their own spin, NYT reports it with their own spin. Me, carlitos, you. You're late, girl.

So you've dismissed it as spin. Good to know it's true then.

ETA: or do you mean the story about the Jews having to register was spin? If so, I agree.

And good to know nobody had posted the link. Sorry to not conform to your spin.

I think what CE means is that the Chief Rabbi of Donetsk himself disputes that the leaflets he and his congregation received came from the alleged source - the self-proclaimed head of the self-proclaimed Republic of Donetsk:

“Yes, we received it late evening on 15th of April. You can find the copy in attachment.

But this letter was a provocation and the man whose signature you can see on the letter, Denis Pushilin, totally disproved these words yesterday… He stated on TV that it wasn’t a letter from Donetsk Republic and they do not have any problems with Jews. Our local governance and Security Service of Ukraine will take care of this situation and will do everything to find the people who distributed these letters… and we trust them. It is safe here for all Jews.”

And CE's source is the Euromaidan.

Probably no more complicated than, "Mine mine mine!"

That's not the endgame. The endgame is dealing with the mess he caused. If yesterday's deal is any indication, he already realized he's not up to it. It could easily be a rouse however.

The facists in the Krim did... The facists in the Ukraine on the other hand haven't yet. And it's just for president.

First of all, the referendum in Crimea wasn't democratic by any meaning of the word I'm aware of. Second, Ukraine has called for presidential elections in a way that enables democratic process. So you have no point there at all.

I don't think sending in tanks generally goes with "tolerating"

You could also end the sentence with "at all", rather than pointing out the irrelevant military deployment who killed no one, as it happens. There were a few deaths, when a crowd of sheep attacked a military base. Each one of those deserves a Darwin award.

Erm.... 11th march cable operators in ukraine where instructed to drop russian channels. 19th march was when Igor beat up that TV chief.

Yeah, and a high court declared that illegal, and ordered Russian propaganda back on the air - in the time of war, mind you. This is what happened. Fascists don't bow to courts, if they do they aren't fascists.

^ Doesn't count anymore. :nope:;)

It does show what an actual Nazi government would do though. Nothing like anything done by Kiev, and yet Russian propaganda incessantly denounces it to be Nazi, fascist and whatnot. Mainly because they have supporters of a guy who spent just 3 years in a Nazi political prison, but preferred them over Communists for about 2 months.

Looks like "Donetsk People's Republic" has rejected the deal made in Geneva.

Pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk say they will not leave the government building there, defying the Kiev authorities and threatening a new international deal on Ukraine.

The separatists' spokesman told the BBC that the Kiev government was "illegal", so they would not go until the Kiev government stepped down.

Russia, Ukraine, the EU and US earlier agreed that illegal military groups in Ukraine must leave official buildings.

They reached the deal in Geneva.

Alexander Gnezdilov, spokesman for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, said his group would evacuate the government building in the eastern city only when the "illegal" Kiev government vacated parliament and the presidential administration.

Ah. So since they failed they didn't even try.
That must be nice for the guys form the free republic thingy. When they fail to establish their own state, all is forgotten and forgiven. (But let me guess: Attempts don't count only applies to the other guys)

Big surprise there. Luckily enough, defying a deal agreed upon everyone will only hurt their standing. A few more shenanigans like this, and they'll be removed by the population.

Ah. So since they failed they didn't even try.

If they were fascists the court would rule in their favor, or the judge in question would find himself loosing family members, or being arrested on trumped up charges. None of that happened near as I can tell. Governments do things they must rescind due to legal challenges regularly, this is just a slightly more objectionable issues - but understandable, given the situation.

I told you this before, but you chose the straw man for some reason.
