I will give the man credit for one thing. He exposed to a lot of people who were waffling on the issue, just how horrible homophobia is. It was Phelps and others like him that have turned the tide of anti-gay sentiments and laws in this country, and for that, I'm grateful. I realize it's sort of like thanking George Wallace for bringing about the end of segregation, but we should never underestimate the power of a really bad example.
