Breaking: Putin signs order to recognize Crimea as a sovereign independent state

RT said:
[...] “According to the will of the peoples of the Crimea on the all-Crimean referendum held on March 16, 2014, [I order] to recognize the Republic of Crimea, in which the city of Sevastopol has a special status, as a sovereign and independent state,” the document reads.

The order comes into force immediately.

Crimea was declared an independent sovereign state, the Republic of Crimea, on Monday, the autonomous Ukrainian regional parliament's website stated.

Crimea also addressed the UN seeking recognition as a sovereign state.

"The Republic of Crimea intends to build its relations with other states on the basis of equality, peace, mutual neighborly cooperation, and other generally agreed principles of political, economic and cultural cooperation between states," the parliament said.

The Crimean parliament also unanimously voted to integrate the region into Russia.

Wow, that was fast. Just in from the observer mentioned above: What was playing on Crimean radio today? Can you guess??

The only people who think think was a fair, unbiased, election are those who WANT to think that, and will ignore all evidence to the contrary.

If I had to guess, I'd say a majority of Crimeans probably favored Russian incorporation. I doubt it was anywhere near 95%, or whatever ridiculous number the Kremlin is currently waving around. Putin desperately needed a "win", and this charade provided the "landslide victory" his agenda required. Shenanigans have already been exposed; I think many more will follow.

Yup to both parts

Yeah almost as if they knew the outcome in advance...

Everybody who studied the issue knew. That's why the clowns in Washington were so much throwing a hissy in the first place. Almost as if they knew stuff like this from the Falklands or Kosovo or something.

I just thought they would keep it a bit more in undecided state, but likely there isn't anything to negotiate with the wig and his cohorts anymore. "Annexation" tomorrow?

The worst penalty for Russia might come not from sanctions, but from investors:they might well decide that Russia is just too big a risk to invest big money in.

But tell us more about these Western "pre$$titudes", CE.

You have to come up with eleven days old Guardian articles? Why don't you google for what the putschists envision for Russian media, dear? We'll be all ears if it gets a bit more substantial than this:

A blogger at the Guardian said:
According to a press release emailed to me by the broadcaster 1+1, the channel's chief engineer was officially told that the broadcasting of 1+1 within the territory of Crimea has been terminated. [...]

Wow, you still didn't get it? Was the math too complicated?

Having a minimum vote for the election to be valid does not compensate for a lack of a "Remain with Ukraine" option. Your infographic was the only one that stated that - The Huffington Post, for example said

The option of asking people if they wish to stick with the status quo - in which Crimea enjoys autonomy but remains part of Ukraine - is not on offer.

Any mark in one of the boxes is regarded as a "Da" vote. Ballot papers will be regarded as spoiled if a voter fills in both boxes or indeed does not fill in either.

Those who stay away will also not influence the outcome, since the result will simply be based on the option preferred by a majority of those voting.

There was far too little time for a free and fair election.

There were some observers but far too few independent observers.

Many ballot counts were secret.

I can't see primary reports, but lots of secondary reporting that 66% more ballot papers were printed than there are registered voters (2.5-million for 1.5-million voters).

And the result is utterly unrealistic. You'd probably get more than 5% of turkeys voting for Christmas.

Just to make this clear for the one bit thinkers who have troubles understanding my posts: I don't like to see the breaking-up of Ukraine happening, as it IMHO sets a dangerous pretext. But the vote of the Crimeans was clear and has to be expected and respected given the circumstances under which it happened. Yet I feel tremendous satisfaction by watching the humiliation of those who thought it to be a good idea to USE NEO NAZI MOBS TO TOPPLE A DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED GOVERNMENT IN EUROPE, only two borders away from me. These people deserve much more severe humiliation and hopefully think twice next time about destroying another country for their disgusting goals. I for one think the red line should have been drawn in 2011 before the most prosperous country of Africa was thrown back to the stone age and one of the oldest civilizations on the planet was almost destroyed and is only now on the brink of recovering - but better late than never.

That's the second time you claim this without providing a link. If it has anything to do with the Ukrainska Pravda claim that 123% of Sevastopol voted to join Russia, that has been debunked by public intelligence already as most propaganda lies will likely have been before you heard of them.

Why not just drop "these people" and say what you really mean:"Evil Capitalists".

Sad to see you are still buying all the crap that was fed you in school back in the "good old days" of the GDR.

No comments about my other link?

You misspelled "the president was impeached by the democratically elected parliament which is still in power and will be until the next scheduled election".

To be fair, he had been democratically elected - because his opponents were incompetent and corrupt.

However he also had lost the confidence of the people and had committed crimes that meant he should have lost power.

The ironic thing is that there probably would have been a pretty good chance of a free and fair Crimean referendum voting to join Russia. However this was not that election.

What humiliation? Putin has succeeded completely in the Crimea, though he did get his ass kicked in the rest of Ukraine...

Indeed, not the rest of my points:

You won't get me to waste my time with answering repetition of clueless parroting. The fact that the AFP infographic is the only place you saw the "50% turnout needed for validity" doesn't mean it was something out of the ordinary outside the subset of media you consume, does it? It's not like you looked for corroboration, or did you?
