You misunderstand as he did not phrase himself well, he actually meant "All teabaggers eating crap!"

I did provide the details, but it requires you to actually click a link.
And this is hardly the first time a teachers union has complained about standards, they're always complaining about standardized testing. They want white collar pay and benefits without any of the responsibility or accountability that goes with it. They want the responsibility and accountability of an assembly line worker at a widget factory.
...After teaching for over thirty years in U.S. public schools and colleges, am I asking too much of our educators to explain why we’re teaching grade schoolers how to masturbate but not teaching them how to read, write, and solve mathematical equations by using methods that our business world can understand?
High school graduates are more likely to vote Republican, while college graduates are more likely to vote Democrats. High education tends to correlate to voting Dem, lower tends to relate to Republicans.

Teaching proper sex ed is important. It shouldn't be pitted against the other core skills.
Does anyone think it really is? I'd love some evidence that we are actually eschewing teaching kids to read in order to teach them to masturbate.

For all those who might want that, NO - I have had the sex-ed training in several systems in two states (what with my Bio. degree) and nothing beyond the basic mechanics of the two involved systems gets covered - a lot of sex ed is a re:look at how to handle personal problems/reactions to people who diss you or whom you have dissed and similar. We did (the teachers in one system) get to have questions we might get asked in class asked of us and I am pleased to note there were none that one participant could not answer fully and with variationsTeaching proper sex ed is important. It shouldn't be pitted against the other core skills.

The standardized testing exists so the state has an idea how well students are learning the standardized curriculum.Unfortunately the link doesn't describe why the teachers in question are opposed to the testing. Here in the UK we have testing and teacher opposition is focused on the disruption that the testing causes. Children are being taught to do well in the standardised testing and administrators and managers are obesessing about doing well in the tests rather than the children getting an education. The other thing that standardised testing is criticised about is that it fails to adequately take into account external factors so that schools in areas where English is not a majority language and teachers get little or no support from parents do less well than schools in solid middle-class areas.
Sounds like your mom was in the wrong profession, or should simply be paid the same as day care workers if she had given up on actually teaching them anything. You don't need a college degree to be a babysitter. As my mom was a teacher I take huge offense with that. Yes, they would like good pay and benefits. There are not many other jobs that require you to navigate the minefield that is a classroom of 7 year old children. Some are emotionally stunted, some have learning disabilities. They have to be identified and dealt with. Some of the kids are being abused or neglected. They have to be identified too. All the while even the normal kids are going through all the turmoil of growing up with all the highs and lows that entails. Oh and in the middle of this all you are supposed to confer life long knowledge and skills to them. Then you turn around and have parents come in and complain that their kid is special and deserves to be treated differently. Other parents come in and complain that your version of math or spelling offends their religion. Still others want to know why you used a book with Person ______ in it because Person ______ is evil because of politics/religion/Skeletor. Still others come in to yell at you just because they are plain crazy and want to yell.
In spite of all that they try very hard to get the job done even if society just views them as a parasite.
Teachers should be paid like white collar workers. They are way more important to society than any actual white collar worker and deal with way more BS.

What's the point of having education standards if you have no way of measuring if they're actually being adhered to and learned? Many a school district has graduated students from high school who could barely spell their own names, let alone learned necessary reading, math, science, geography, etc. That's why this testing has been adopted.
My beef with the Common Core is simple: in adopting the Common Core Math curriculum in our middle school we are seriously dumbing down our math standards and limiting our ability to help those students who excel at math to advance as rapidly as they otherwise would. This is driven by the local high school. Our high school is using the new standards as an excuse to not enroll incoming freshmen in any course more advanced than Math 1 regardless of their performance in 7th and 8th grade.
We are a very poor rural K-8, yet we have over the last 5 years established a very successful math program. In our high school the overwhelming majority of freshmen (75 - 80%) are enrolled in Algebra 1 while more than 50% of our graduating 8th graders move directly into geometry as freshmen having completed algebra 1 in middle school. This year about 25% of our 8th grade class is already enrolled in geometry. These students will be in algebra 2 as freshmen and will be able to enroll in AB, BC Calculus as Juniors. Next year will be the last year that we will be able to let these kids move up, after that they will all go into Math 1 in high school. Not a good thing.
Fortunately here the HS I was at was perfectly happy to do the version you should have there and has done quite well with it!!!My college degrees (plural) are in mathematics, and I have coursework equivalent to another bachelors in Russian language.
I vote against democrats because I view the US democrat party as the primary focus of evil in the world. I vote for whoever has the best probabilistic shot at preventing the democrat from holding the office in question. It doesn't really matter who the other guy is, he could be a Nazi, a communist, a member of the Black Panthers or the Klan or a member of the Green Dragon Tong or the Thug sect... Usually due to the way the US political system is set up, the other guy is a Republican.

Sorry, but I'm damned sick of hearing "we are highly skilled professionals and deserve high pay and lifetime benefits" out of one side of their mouth while out the other side of their mouths they say "these kids can't be taught, they're from broken homes and they're poor".Oh goodness me! Could you be any trollier?
It seems clear that Travis is telling you his mother had a hard job and a skilled one, and that you have reacted by trying to belittle her experiences. That's not very nice, you know.
