Continued: (Ed) Atheism Plus/Free Thought Blogs (FTB)

having rubbed elbows with a few "h4x0Rz" in my time, Id imagine they wouldve said "hey! femos! hit them for t3h lulZ!".

Thatd have been about the depth of the "targeting".

If that's what happened, it is targeting. I don't see much to choose from between "going after feminists is always good for lulz" and "verily, we shall teach those uppity [gendered slur] the dire consequences of challenging the patriarchy!"

But, the comparison only applies at all if that's what actually happened.

Didn't they just get caught because their security provider was targeted?
I thought that Cloudflare getting hit resulted in these sites going down or being inaccessible.

You're right that it would be targeting, and the practical end result is the same, but I'd say that the key difference is the difference between trolling a target that you believe will react in a way that amuses you, and attempting to silence people whose political statements you don't agree with.

The latest post on Skepchick:

Content note! This post will contain slurs relating to ethnicity, gender, and mental disabilities.

There is currently a, er, lively discussion happening in the comments of Surly Amy and Elyse’s DDoS Valentine post over the use of words like “stupid” and “idiot” to describe people who are ignorant. A few commenters are arguing that those words are triggering for people with mental disabilities and so they should not be used.

Folks, you can't make this stuff up. A comedy writers dream - the jokes write themselves!

Bwaaaaaaahahaha.

I can't even make it through all the comments because I'm being oppressed by a third world internet service provider and the page won't fully load.

It sure loks like A+ is going to succeed in ther mission of getting everybody in the world to hate them.

I'm wondering how Skeptchick neophyte Grimalkin is going to fare with her new foray into that venue. Is he/she going to resign for ethical reasons or is the boot going to be applied.

This comment from their Love Letter to Our DDoS Hackers thread really says it all

And y’know? I get feeling dog piled on, and I get feeling triggered by being told you’re wrong. I’ve got depression, I know how it feels. For me, getting called out triggers the “Everyone secretly hates me” feelings and makes me want to hide in a goddamned corner and never confront anyone. But I don’t use that as an excuse for why everyone has to *nicely* ask me to get off their feet, and I don’t shame people over it. Because when I’ve done something bigoted, it doesn’t matter how I feel.

So let me get this straight. You want to tell people they suck, but you don't want them to tell you that you suck back because it will hurt your fee fees ?

Okay now.

Or maybe it was getting called out on using the so painfully obvious "abelist slur" lame earlier in the thread that triggered her

A+ licking their wounds

I get the opposite from that - that s/he has a negative reaction to people being nasty to him/her, but thinks that his/her negative reaction is part of the price you pay for saying bigoted things. Or, to put it another way - s/he is going to continue to be aggressive towards people, and also accepts people being aggressive towards him/her, despite how that makes him/her feel.

So my little block bot test, for "guilt by association" blockings did not result in getting added. I made my first twitter account, followed 15 or so lvl 2/3 accounts on their list and did not get added to the list. (Single data point so anecdotal for funzies only.)

That's how I read it.

I can see that if the statement is referring to the call out for using the word lame.

As a point of information, Grimalkin prefers "he" as a pronoun per his signature on atheismplus.

Oh yea, I forgot. It was the bikini picture that threw me, I was expecting board shorts and a rash guard.

Wow. So now even Skepchick is too 'bigoted' for A+.

You'd think there'd be a point where they would go, "Hey, we keep running afoul of a bunch of progressive thinkers... maybe the problem is us." But instead, they just double down on how much purer and better they are than everyone else, and how no one else can stack up to them.

A blog seems far more their speed. They can disable comments and just post things. No dissent possible, no need to ban anybody.

Reading through the blog thread, it seems pretty obvious that none of them actually want to write a blog post, for fear of running afoul of Correct Thought.

Since anything, at any moment, could be triggering, or privileged, or--most likely--both, it's safer to simply bask in the glow of Correct Thought, and wait for someone else to dare a contribution.

Most bloggers I know of seem to have gotten started by just getting started. They have opinions, or ideas or knowledge they want to share, and they just start spilling it out post after post, day after day. If the Plussers were serious about blogging, they'd be doing it already. Artwork, if it happened at all, would be an afterthought.

What opinion, or idea, or knowledge, would anyone there dare to blog about? They know how people get treated, when they deviate from Correct Thought even by accident. They don't want to write a blog. They want the awesome feeling they'd get from reading a blog written by someone else, that echoes and reinforces their convictions.

Read this cogent critique of atheist social justice warriors on a facebook friend's wall:

Those attacking you are not actual Feminists. They're Culture-Marxists hiding behind a facade of activism for gender equity.

Their au courant 'privilege' rhetoric is a perfect example of this. It's the classic Marxist notion of "class consciousness" re-branded so people won't catch on to what they're really saying.

When the Social Justice-bots drone on about "checking your privilege" or some variation thereof, they're not seriously cautioning you to examine how your upbringing might affect your worldview... they don't give a toss about any of that. It's just their way of calling you a ThoughtCriminal; what their more-honest ideological precursors would have called a Class Enemy.

Don't make the mistake of trying to establish dialogue with those who believe that all questions were answered, all blame assigned, before you even got there.

Wow! And wow again. The comments section of that thread is a must read. I literally can't believe that it's even a discussion. For Rebecca to stop using the word stupid would take away 95% of her arguing style. Grimalkin is *******, big time. ( not that we didn't know that already).

I find myself in the unusual position of :

A) agreeing with Rebecca Watson and amy Roth.

B) feeling sympathy with them both.

Skepchick and a+ are stupid.
