Iran Navy to Patrol US Borders

I joked about their new jet "fighter", but I do actually have a serious concern about this. Presuming that they can get here, since cargo ships do similar feats routinely, what happens then? If they have an accident, it can be painted as an attack by an American ship, and if they deliberately provoke us, any response, no matter how slight, can be painted as aggressive. Either one will have the world on their side screaming about those horrible awful evil belligerent Americans. So what's supposed to be done? Nothing at all until they actually fire a weapon at buildings on the American coast? The people giving them their orders are insane, so we can't just assume they won't just keep taking one more step every time we don't shoot them over the last step they just took.

The Iranians have been baiting us into making the first move for years. This is nothing new.

I don't think that is the intent this time. I suspect this is entirely for a select Iranian audience. That would be religious leaders with no understanding of military issues.

According to CNN reports. The Iranians are sending one frigate and their only real re-supply ship.

This gives them some ability to stay on station with that frigate if they have a deal with a friendly port to sell them fuel. It also gives them a bit of redundancy for mechanical problems they might face. One ship can aid the other and maybe tow it home if they cannot repair at sea.

The greatest risk for the Iranians is if both ships break down. Then they are going to need help that cannot come from home.

If something bad happens they might try to blame the US, which could set back recently improving relations. But that is about it. Not much else would come from it. Mechanical issues are much more likely to happen.

The offensive potential of one frigate far from home is pretty limited. No other ship there to provide mutual protection. They really will just be showing their flag.

And honestly I doubt this move is coming from any serious military leader in Iranian. They can't have any illusions about their chance against the United States, not after Operation Praying Mantis where 1/12th of the US Navy sank pretty much their entire Navy in an afternoon, and probably don't see this as anything other then a wasteful bit of trying to rattle sabers you don't have.

For this reason there should be a few crappy old navy ships following them with cameras running 24/7 so they have proof that they didn't fire when the Iranians spring a leak, blow an engine, or run into a reef they did know about and sink.

I think the Iranian ships should be led into the Bermuda Triangle....then let Mother Paranormal Nature take its course. When the ships come up missing due to the mysterious Bermuda Triangle, President Obama can hold a press conferfence and proclaim it was "Allah's Will" that the Iranian navy disappeared.

Hell, I suspect a US Coast Guard Cutter could probably dispose of the Iranian Frigate .....
I am reminded of when Chancellor Bismarck in the 1870's about what his response would be to the British Army (at this point largely a colonial police force, and very small by European standards) landing in Germany>
"I would send out a couple of policemen to arrest them".

Easily. Their New National Security Cutters are very large frigates, maybe even small destroyers, in capability.

I spent the greater part of two years sailing around the "Bermuda Triangle". I suggest you come up with an alternate plan.

As for fuel, Cuba would be a likely point.

Due to gross navigational errors the Iranian navy has accidentaly chosen to display it's naval might by steaming up and down the the Somali coast.

In response to the US Navy presence in the gulf Iran has decided to send their ships to approach the US maritime borders.

Try as I might I can't take this seriously. It's like a mouse slapping a cat and saying "Let's see how you like it!"
The Iranian navy is a joke. IF they stray into our waters they will be in big trouble. Nothing they have can stand up to the US navy and our coast guard could give them a run for their money in a fight.

They have to do more than stray to get a fight started. We champion "freedom of navigation" after all. I remember going up above the 38th Parrallel on the west side of NK to advise them they couldn't stop us. (This was on a "double-ended" guided missile cruiser with no guns larger than M60s. They sent a Bear to fly over us at 1,000 feet just to show some love.)

Assuming this is true, it is perfectly obvious it could not be intended to provide a threat to the US. I wonder if we are perhaps missing the point of the gesture?

"To Iranian vessel, this is United States vessel. Do you require assistance?"
"United States vessel, this is Iranian vessel. We do not require assistance at this time."
"Iranian vessel, this is United States vessel. So your ship is supposed to look like that?"

Well done, sir. I bequeath thee three internets.
