Coke creates advert that causes conservatives to go nuts

Cpl Ferro,
This thread is not a discussion of Lyndanetics. I knew it was wrong to take the bait, but I have such fond memories of getting Larouchies to twitch that it's hard to pass up. Thanks for the memories, but let's get back to THIS THREAD. It's a discussion of why xenophobic Americans exhibit their tribalism and fear in the face of something that's simply different to them and if that is actually outright bigotry or merely ingrained racism. You've introduced the "No, it's right to feel that way!" counter argument. You can go start a thread on Saint Lyndon if you want.

Dear Foolmewunz,

If you're going to muzzle any talk about ideas, the absence of which explains where tribalism and fear of the Other come from, I am unable to advance the thread. Have at it yourself. Somewhere, someone understands √-1, and I must find them.

Tribalism is just a little simpler than a math equation - studies have shown that humans work best in groups of 20 to 100 (essentially the number of people who most of us can keep straight). Things that differentiate between groups such differences in language (which can be as subtle as accents or vocabulary), dress, etc. often result in feelings of distrust between members of groups.

One of the more interesting bits is that people in modern society often belong to multiple groups, likely due to simple population density and the reality of modern society, but still results in distrust of persons outside of their groups.

This quote has always made me laugh - especially as I picture the English language being anthropomorphized as a stereotypical Victorian footpad passsing the words off to his higher class fence at the local dogfight.
:D
Dear Foolmewunz,

If you don't know the meaning of √-1, just saying so would be more polite than ignoring the question.

Is Director wrong? Is Gauss wrong? Are they both wrong together?
What has your inability to understand Complex numbers got to do with anything? And why are you continuing to parrot the ramblings of a LaRouche front rather than looking at textbooks?

Complex numbers are generally covered during secondary education, weren't you paying attention?

Does that mean that they are ultra-conservative and impervious to logic?
:D

I saw a comment online about former Congressman Allen West complaining about the commercial being in "languages I don't recognize." He was a congressman from Florida and served in Iraq and didn't recognize Spanish and Arabic??

I haven't read the article, but my guess would be that, by "don't recognize," West meant something closer to "won't notice" or "admit" than "can place." This is kind of the equivalent of stamping his foot and pretending that the people who speak those languages simply don't exist (and so don't have to be recognized either); but stamping their feet is pretty much the political method-of-choice for the Wests of the world.

I suspect it's more along the line of "It's not English, so it's just some kind of babble I couldn't understand because I'm a Good Christian." In other words it like a country not recognizing a government they consider illegitimate.

My favorite example of this kind of thought came from a colleague some years ago, who said he didn't like going to San Francisco because "you walk down the street, you can't understand a word people say. They speakin' every language but English out there." The irony was that he spoke in a dialect that most native English-speaking US residents would have found difficult if not impossible to understand.

This came from the Daily Show. It was one of Stewart's jokes while covering this issue on the show.

I just think it's awesome that people singing a song in something other than English is subverting the government and/or Constitution. Which part, I wonder?

I also love how merely speaking Spanish supports illegal immigration.

Screw this - I'm going to teach myself Spanish, and use it a lot. Just to piss my fellow white people off.

Racists aren't usually the sharpest knives in the drawer. None of this crap makes any sense, especially in a country built immigrants.

It's interesting that so many people object to singing America the Beautiful in languages other than English, yet no one seems to care that it's being used to flog soda pop.
I'm more disappointed in Bob Dylan for doing his FIAT commercial. There is so much wrong with that. What a joke. I never liked his music, but he went from "spokesman for a generation" (or whatever) to nothing in sixty seconds.

I don't watch TV, other than an occasional sporting event. Lack of content is 95% of the reason, commercials ruin the rest.

Superbowl commercials used to be more interesting, IMO. Now too many are just preachy, drawn out, and take themselves waaay too seriously. Yes Coke and FIAT and VISA, tell us all how we should live and what it means to be an American!

I cannot sit in the same room with a TV on for very long. Quit watching for a few months and you'll see what I mean (those who do). It is a constant reminder of how stupid (the media thinks) we all are, and is a gigantic time waster. I do like movies and I have a nice home theater for that.

And Coke? Bleh, quit that daily habit too along with the TV. Both are bad for your brain.

Your "nice home theater" doesn't contain a TV?

And I don't see how television insults our intelligence any more than movies do. That's just snobbery.

I do not own a TV. When I want to watch a movie or a cable series, I stream it on my PC.
