Coke creates advert that causes conservatives to go nuts

I'm pretty sure that some of those latest batch of tweets are parodies, if not many of the earlier ones.

Specifically the one about throwing a jalapeno popper at the TV and the other one saying "adios Coke!"

I know. The last one especially could be parody.

But.......Poe's Law and all.

When it was co-opted by the loony religious right.

Because shilling for fizzy sugar water is American, unlike tolerance and diversity. :)ETA: Coke (Mexican version) and Dr.Pepper
are quite American- most fizzy sugar water is just fizzy sugar water. Intolerance and anti-diversity are un-American, but they are republicker, teabagger and racist anal orifice traits.:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp:jaw-dropp

Don't forget to tell them about Bate threatening to resign her professorship when Wellesley tried require faculty to profess their fealty to the Christian faith. That should start some cranial detonations.....

Good grief, they really don't understand much USAian history do you?

 Again with the ignorance and borderline bigotry.

Really?

Right.... Just at long as they agree with your beliefs.

Who knows? But don't forget the Scandinavians, Minnesota wouldn't be the same without them.

If these outraged conservatives can't drink Coke after this ad, and they can't drink Pepsi because of their pro-gay rights posture, what is left? Mr. Pibb?
It is my humble opinion that they are quite free to drink urine instead. Straight from the source - which, being as they are, they will enjoy.

French America would be thinking differently than an English one.[emphasis added]

Wait, are you talking about the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis?

Common sense: language is the chief basis for national sovereignty.

Do you mean "a common language is the chief means for cohesion among the population of a nation"? Because of you really do mean "national sovereignty", I think that the Founding Father would disagree, since they still spoke English after the States becoming a separate country from England.

And people expressing their joy in being American in a language other than English is bad because?

When my old neighbor was growing up in rural Iowa, school was taught in German, because that is what most people spoke. This was early 1900s.

How are people not speaking English in the US a matter of "change"? It's always been that way.

To speak French is to think differently because there are words for X in one language that are lacking in another, and vice versa.

In the sense that the French have no word for "entrepreneur"?

Okay, what is the evidence that the French think differently because of the language?

Here's the main reason I was disturbed by the ad:

And I braced myself for the predictable right-wing outrage. But perhaps those of us who care about inequality and racism should be angry, too. Coca-Cola’s diversity ad wasn’t purposed just to celebrate the reality of a multi-ethnic America. It was to sell soda to rapidly-expanding but vulnerable populations, even if that means contributing to serious health problems, exploiting divides in class and education, and exacerbating racial inequality.

Liberals should also be upset by Coke’s ‘America the Beautiful’ ad

Besides this, a person doesn't have to be a white racist or a conservative to have some problems with diversity: The Multicultural Mystique: The Liberal Case Against Diversity

They should have played the commercial twice. The first time, with all English lyrics. The second time, with the same visuals, as the one they played. It would still have caught people by surprise, but maybe in a different way.

Do conservatives think that the people in America just sprung out of the dirt speaking English while killing all the natives?
That's closer to the truth than some other things many people believe, but there are a couple of things wrong with it.

For one thing, the English-speaking immigrants came from overseas, not from the dirt.

And the immigrants didn't kill all the natives, just a lot of them. Besides, the killings began before any English-speaking colonies had been established. Most of those deaths were caused by smallpox or other Old World diseases, so it's not as though the conquistadors actually killed the native Americans in war or cold blood, at least not always.

They knew the diseases were contagious, but there was gold in them thar hills, so a few million deaths weren't important.

I don't value tradition. So can you think of another reason that I should think this change is bad?

Dear Travis,

There are two layers to any national culture: (1) its contributions to universal Classical culture (eg. Shakespeare, Schiller) developed in the context of its national linguistic tradition, and (2) its idiosyncratic traditions of costume, cuisine, ethnic makeup, religion, etc.. Do you see the value of preserving the first, even if the second mutates away?

I'd argue that a national identity is not static, and in fact changes over time. In fact, I'd hope so, in that a nation changes in response to the realities of the times.

In terms of "new" eating away at tradition, you could argue that about almost any change. The ever-increasing shift from rural to urban, the shift from rail travel to road, etc.

Indeed, Corsair, you're right, but do you see that a diet of unending change, unending New, is identical to Pandemonium? It's like endless channel-flipping of the soul, there's no appreciation of the subtleties of any one programme.
