N Korean Leader executes uncle

It wouldn't surprise me if his aunt was next, consolidating power and all that....

Kim Jong Un "You were always my favorite aunt, and I've loved you since I was a child. You comforted me when I was hurt, you made me cookies and read me stories, you were so kind. Now, would you be so kind as to stand in front of that wall? Yes, the one with all the bullet holes..."

I wonder if he ever considered the possibility : "Someday this kid will have me executed."

Possibly. He's fallen favour before.

Of course given north korean politics I suppose its possible that kim Jong Un didn't have him killed at all and instead it was done by someone else within the regime as a show of power..

It was widely alleged around the world that the uncle simply was the power behind the throne. In retrospect I wonder if it was this rumor alone that sealed the man's fate, the reality of the situation aside.

The NY Times tries to make sense of what exactly happened, and what it means going forward. They point out this sort of openness is unusual for North Korea. Maybe it's because the uncle was too famous to quietly purge without anyone noticing.

Grasping for Clues in North Korean Execution

SEOUL, South Korea — As he was confessing to crimes that would lead to his execution, the doomed uncle of North Korea’s leader suggested that he hoped the country’s many economic woes would drive the military to overthrow the Kim dynasty, the state-run news agency said.

The statement, if true, was shocking for a country that normally hides any hint of disloyalty, has not publicized a coup attempt in decades and has not released a detailed explanation of a purge to its people — much less to the world. But even if the uncle, Jang Song-thaek, did not utter such treason, the laundry list of alleged crimes the North Koreans published is notable for its admission of instability in the hermetic nation and suggests that at least some see flaws in its debilitated state-run economy.

“I was going to stage the coup by using army officers who had close ties with me or by mobilizing armed forces under the control of my confidants,” the North’s Korean Central News Agency on Friday quoted Mr. Jang as having said during his court-martial. “I thought the army might join in the coup if the living of the people and service personnel further deteriorate in the future.”

As analysts scrambled Friday to make sense of the execution — many had doubted that the leader, Kim Jong-un, would kill a relative — and the highly unusual way the news rolled out, they advanced myriad theories for why Mr. Kim killed the man who was supposed to be his mentor. The biggest divide was whether the purge suggested Mr. Kim had fully taken charge of his country two years after his father’s death or, instead, was severely weakened by the reported betrayal.

... It's his just desserts that the regime's princeling turned on him in the end.

I'm skeptical of this claim. I don't think Kim Jong Un has been crazy enough for NK's military leadership. Young Leader may be next.

South Korea's recent display of global politics may also have instigated another round of NK craziness.
China has expressed "regret" over South Korea's decision to expand its air defense zone to include an area claimed by both countries, the country's official Xinhua news agency has reported.

The princeling reportedly had his uncle stripped naked and thrown to a pack of 120 wild dogs that had been starved for days.

I saw this earlier today. I'm not sure whether to believe it or not, but if it's true, it's very disturbingly sick. This is way more than having your uncle executed by firing squad for supposed treason. Supposedly he attended and watched 6 people getting chewed up by dogs for an hour.

Jang, was married to Kim's aunt. How does that make him Kim's uncle? Also, some the accusations levelled againt Jang are absurdly trivial and unworthy of being enumerated as part of the evidence which was used to reach a death-sentence verdict.

the correct term is "uncle by marriage", but it's a bit unwieldy. Shortened to "Uncle"

does the term "Tyrant" mean anything to you?

It is an ultimate crime of all ages, proof that one has vilely set one's face against the benevolent paternal love of the eternal wisdom of the great leader!

I don't know if it's just the translation, but everything North Korean is so flowery and over the top. No other country selects its adjectives with such naive bombast. I love that. It's as if Brian Blessed writes their press releases.

From now on, I will read North Korean press releases in Brian Blessed's voice. 'Chiswick! Fresh horses!'

Or not.

I don't want to sound smug, but hey people, we're skeptics. We're supposed to look at sources!

Yeah, North Korea is the kind of place where you can invent outlandish stories which a lot of people will believe partly because its own news service reads like some kind of ridiculous parody of James-Bond-villain-speak.
