The Second Amendment and the "Right" to Bear Arms

Personally, I'm of the opinion that there shouldn't be a right to bear arms.

Why is arming oneself with a potentially deadly weapon considered something that all Americans have a right to do? I don't see it as anything like the right to freedom of speech or assembly, or religion, or anything outlined in the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Why in America - as far as I know alone in the developed world - is gun ownership considered a right?
Originally the right to bear arms was given as a means to fight an opressive government. To be able to fight an opressive government you need guns. Most weapons these days aren't what youd consider military weapons but a determined group of armed citizens can sure make an army miserable. Fifth columnists and such. I personally don't like the idea of not being armed with the current person in power.

I use my guns for recreation. I don't kill anything I shoot cans, plastic bottles and whatever inanimate object I consider worthless. Note I said inanimate.

I'm sure that has a large effect WildCat, and the war on drugs is insane:

O/T Riverside Cop Tricks Autistic Teen into Buying Pot
The undercover operation, titled "Operation Glass House," spanned a few months and included undercover officers in three area high schools: Chaparral, Temecula Valley, and Rancho Vista Continuation. The officers posed as regular high school students and would ask other students for drugs. Twenty-two students were arrested - the majority of them are reported to be special needs students like the Snodgrass' son.

His new friend, who went under the name of Daniel Briggs, was known as "Deputy Dan" to many students because it was so apparent to them that he was an undercover officer. However, to their son, whose disabilities make it hard for him to gauge social cues, Dan was his only real friend.

Dan reportedly sent 60 text messages to their son begging for drugs. According to his parents, the pressure to buy drugs was too much for the autistic teen who began physically harming himself.

The Snodgrass' son finally agreed to buy Dan the pot. Dan give him twenty dollars and it took him three weeks to buy a half joint of pot off a homeless man downtown. This happened twice. When Dan asked a third time, their son refused and Dan cut off all communication.

Does anyone have figures for the proportion of killings that are gang on gang?

I would contend that the smaller, but more emotive issue of spree killings has to be significantly influenced by the ease of access to firearms.

I've got other comments I'm going to go back and make, but I just have to post this first...

C'mon, people... really? Did you all have to just go there? Why dig up a sweeping generalization of an insult which applies to all Americans, including me and others in this thread? You seriously just couldn't stick to the points and refrain from insult?

I was not making an insult. I was commenting on the cultural reasons the US has which contribute to the high gun death rate. I see evidence which suggests a higher tolerence to loss of life in the US than say the UK when it comes to preserving a right.

Why is my Second Amendment right to own and carry a grenade launcher being infringed upon? I am a trustworthy citizen, with no criminal history whatsoever. Yet, the law says I cannot own this type of weapon.

Is the NRA taking any steps to address this outrage?

You're the one who used the word. You define it.

As I said, I defined it.

Anyway, the word "civilised" is thrown about A LOT when it comes to the US and gun crime, as though because of the 2nd Amendment, the USA is a culture where A Serbian Film happens on a regular basis.

The NRA is the National Rifle Association. You need to talk to the NGLA, the National Grenade Launcher Association.

What law would that be?

I doubt it. I can't even get them to help out on SBR and SBS.
