What to do with people that murder pets?

After one bonded to it emotionally ?

Yes.

I had a cat that died. I cried. I buried it. I have pictures of it to treasure. I'll always miss my cat and wish I spent more time with it.

Wasn't really that long till I got a new one. It was just a matter of months.

I can't do that with people. A person I love dies, I don't try to find a replacement. A friend died over a year ago. I don't try to replace her and nothing ever could.

About as funny as a chihuahua or ather small dog attack I suppose, but yet cats are allowed to roam while chihuahuas are not. Why the double standard? Why is it that cats should have greater freedoms than dogs? Is it simply because cats require more effort to keep contained than dogs?

Are people afraid of Chihuahuas?

I'm sure we'd just as quickly kill a leopard running around biting people as we would a wolf.

I don't know one house cat that is as deadly as an out of control Rottweiler.

Sorry, but the toxoplasmosis thing is a complete red herring. Don't get me started. Ask what happened to The Atheist.

Why compare cats only with dogs? I can't think of any pet that is commonly allowed to roam free other than cats. What about snakes?

I'm not worried about being attacked by a cat. They are simply a serious nuisance to me. So are loose dogs. The same dog crapped on my lawn twice this week. Neighbor goes outside and lets the dog (a pitbull) run around free while having a smoke I suppose. My patio cam caught it so I'm not sure yet. Many pet owners/(people) are morons, or just jerks. Cats do the same thing. I saw one killing birds in a neighbors tree two days in a row last week.

Although dogs are more dangerous to people, cats are far more dangerous to other wildlife. I wonder how many birds the cat killed (and probably didn't eat). So if we're all animal lovers here, let's keep them all inside. Simple.

Yes but deadlyness or severity isn't a factor. If a cat that I have found injured in some way scratches and bites me as I try to help it or search it for owner details then the damage might be minor but I've still been inconvenienced simply because someone wants to let kitty roam. If a cat attacks my hens why should I have to get scratched removing it from the coop and then get the added fun of euthanizing the birds its mauled?

Why the double standard?

Because cats and dogs are different kinds of animals and they behave differently. Welcome to Earth.

I think it depends on the dog. Some dogs definitely should not be allowed to run around unattended. Where I grew up there were signs in the nearby fields saying that "sheep worriers" would be shot. Those sheep worriers would be dogs, not cats, and perhaps only occasionally drunken humans. It was certainly a good idea if you were a dog owner to keep your dog under control around the sheep. Letting them out unattended to run about would not have been a good idea.

Cats don't regularly go after livestock. Maybe smaller animals like livestock.

[T]here may be multiple reasons for giving dogs less liberty. Dog attacks on adults and children are fairly common; cat attacks on humans less so. Cats don't usually wear muzzles for the same reason. All in all it is really not that surprising and no need to think of it as a "double standard". Cats and dogs are different.
...I often wished my relatives' dogs were not allowed out everywhere. I didn't really care either way about the cats. That's because cats and dogs obviously behave differently.

Now, maybe you can always find a particularly aggressive cat and a particularly docile dog or a particularly small one and say, "Look! I found two extreme cases which means there is no distinction between the two and everything is exactly the same!" if you are willing to be shamelessly dishonest. But you won't convince anyone else with that.

Oh, please upload that! I'd love to see the smoking dog!:)

Okay ..... :boxedin:

I'm asking. :D

There was a major dust-up between him and quite a few forum members in a thread where he was advocating killing all pets because they were harmful. Toxoplasmosis was one of the justifications he dreamed up for this bizarre proposal. (Mostly is was "I'm an atheist so I'm supremely logical and right about everything so you should all agree with me.")

It ended with him disappearing from the forum, permanently.

OP: Sorry for the loss, and I completely understand if you wax a bit extreme in response.

Two thoughts: We could do more to stop thinking about animals in terms of severely outdated science ('dumb instinct') and recognize that sentience and awareness are a matter of degree, and are most developed in our branch of evolution, though perhaps also quite a bit in others. Consider that a rant against rampant 'speciesism.'

Second is, though I assign humans much greater moral weight, emotionally I'd be very, very hard pressed not to knock the lights out of anyone I came across in the act of being cruel to an animal. If bullying humans is cowardly, bullying animals is downright depraved and sick.

As for hunting, if you're going to eat it, fine. If it is part of a needed population cull for environmental reasons, fine. Otherwise, since a sport normally involves something in the way of fair play, I just don't see how hunting for pleasure could be considered anything other than an act of cruelty, and no sport at all.

I'll accept your point when a rabbit or dolphin logs in to add their support to your stance.

Actually, you admitted it's a sliding scale, so I'd accept a letter or phone call from a non-human animal of your choice (as the internet is new even for humans).

I agree with that to a point. Eating and sport aren't the only motivations behind hunting. Feral animal control is by far the largest motivator for hunting in Australia. Obviously there are trophies involved in the way of antlers, jawbones, skins, etc, but they are secondary.

I hunt, and I can't understand how anyone anywhere on earth hunts and kills native species, unless it's for food. What I find especially abhorrent is people hunting predators in their native habitat for no better reason than to take a trophy. That is sick.

I've never been interested enough in hunting to do it myself, but have never understood the abhorence toward trophy hunting. Guess maybe I see it from the animal's point of view, because it's just as dead, regardless of why it was killed.

Unless there's so much hunting pressure that animals are being driven to extinction, I don't see the problem, and the pressure could come from food hunting as well as trophy hunting.

Perhaps it's a way of limiting the amount of game taken, because people can only eat so much, but they could theoretically take limitless trophies? But it seems a round-about way to do it. One trophy or one freezer-full of meat requires the death of the same individual animal; if over-hunting is a problem, the death of subsequent animals is what's wrong, not the use of the first one.

The other thing that puzzles me about hunting is the negative feelings toward things that make it too easy.

I understand that making hunting more challenging may make it more personally satisfying for the hunter when he/she does succeed. But society generally has no moral problem with using the most certain, quick methods for killing cattle or hogs, and in fact would be appalled if slaughterhouse workers were chasing cattle around and letting some get away scared but safe each day. So I don't see why the same behavior--using the most efficient killing methods--is considered unsporting for hunters.

Again, I wonder if it is/was a way of encouraging hunters not to kill too many animals, by limiting the amount of game they could take by classifying some methods as "unsporting."

Well I'm not advocating the death penalty.

I'm just saying that people that kill animals for fun should maybe be locked up for a very long time. Or put on a list of people to keep an eye on.

For fun ? Psych evaluation, maybe. But if someone kills an animal belonging to someone else, without the fun part, they should get a fine or something. The crime was against the owner of the pet, not the animal itself.

EDIT: Though maybe a prison sentence isn't out of the question.
