Dick Cheney's Daughter Launches Senate Bid—and Maybe a GOP Civil War, Too

Next year's senate primary in Wyoming just got a whole lot more interesting. The Associated Press reports that Liz Cheney, the elder of Dick Cheney's two daughters, has officially announced her plans to challenge Wyoming's senior senator in the Republican primary.

The move isn't a complete surprise—rumors of it had been swirling inside the Cowboy State and around the Beltway for weeks—but it's still rather major news because 69-year-old Sen. Mike Enzi has made it clear that he has no desire to step aside, even for the daughter of his former fly-fishing buddy. Here's how the New York Times' Jonathan Martin summed things up last week in advance of today's announcement:

Ms. Cheney’s move threatens to start a civil war within the state’s Republican establishment, despite the reverence many hold for her family. Mr. Enzi, 69, says he is not ready to retire, and many Republicans say he has done nothing to deserve being turned out. ... The developments underscore the complicated relationship between the Beltway-centered Cheney family and the sparsely populated state that provided its political base.​

Liz until recently hasn't actually spent much time in Wyoming, but lived in Northern Virginia. She shares her father's hawkish views on foreign policy.
OTOH, Enzi may be the incumbent senator, but have you ever heard of him before now? What exactly has he accomplished in the Senate? "He has done nothing to deserve being turned out" sounds like damning with faint praise. Cheney at least would bring more name-recognition and visibility.

There are some places, Chicago and Washington DC come to mind, where the only real race is ever in the primaries. Then the general election is a mere formality. I think that Wyoming might be that sort of place for Republicans.

Even if it is a Democrat, it probably won't be the sort of Democrat you are hoping for. At best it might be a blue dog Democrat.
 
I'd guess the incumbent is just holding out for a deal, and will allow Liz to replace him on the ballot if the right one comes along. And considering the connections and backing she will get, she will likely win it too.

She would also push for a new war probably against Iran.
 
Sen. Rand Paul says his first response to the news that Liz Cheney’s Senate bid was to wonder if she was “going to run in her home state of Virginia.”

Mr. Paul, a Kentucky Republican who is a tea party favorite and likely 2016 presidential contender, said he heard rumors last year that Mrs. Cheney, the elder daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, was pondering a bid for the Senate in Virginia, where “I guess she has lived most of her life.”

Since her announcement, Mr. Paul has come out in strong support of Mr. Enzi and signaled that Mrs. Cheney’s entrance into the race has turned it into a proxy war between the libertarian-leaning and defense-minded wings of the party over foreign policy and national security.

We're talking about Wyoming. A state with two US senators and two escalators. (Four if you count up and down.) The state were dear ol'dad had to 'move back' to so he could be VP. Being a Cheney is a plus there.
