Merged Paula Deen: Use the N word, get the axe

In a really weird bit of juxtaposition, this still of Paula looks a lot like a toy bank my grandfather used to have.

About the only good news Deen has had this week is in the past 24 hours, Aaron Hernandez has taken the spotlight away from her as the most despised Celeb in AMerica....

Or, you know, corporate marketing departments not wanting to be associated with someone they think will hurt their brands. Whichever.
 
I remember when advertisers pulled out of Rush's show when he made some stupid comment, and then they came back. This is about $$$$, not political correctness.
 
So, six pages in, and it still looks like a large percentage of those outraged enough about the affair to post on it are still laboring under the idea that it's all about the use of "the n-word" alone, and some of them think even that was confined to one occasion. People went to effort to write whole news articles about Deen and the lawsuits against her, but heck, why bother when we could just argue about "the n-word" instead?

Certainly.

But why are they doing this? Why do they think it will hurt their brands?

Because of the public shaming.

I think Paula Deen, given her own statements, is much more racist than she believes herself to be.

Don't see that this has anything to do with cooking, though.

Same for Tiger Woods. OK, so he's a womanizer. What does that have to do with golf?

What happens is simply that various media outlets see that there's a flaw in some public figure -- doesn't matter who -- which fits some current trend in fashionable outrage -- doesn't matter what -- and they go after it because it pushes people's gossip buttons, which means they can write click-bait headlines to gossipy stories that garner page-views and long contentious comment threads.

They really could not care less who it is or what was said, as long as it's "sticky".

This story's very sticky, so they run it.

And it gives people a chance to throw stones at her and feel better about themselves because, after all, they would never want to attend an affair with blacks dressed in slave livery. Oh, no, they're much better than that.

And a lot of people genuinely are better than that, but so what?

I don't know Paula Deen. Does it affect my world if she's a bigot? Not really.

Does it affect my world that "news" is largely a manipulative amalgam of marketing, propaganda, and gossip with little to no regard for the value of the content and frighteningly little fact-checking? Yup.

Rush and Chick-fil-A came out (pardon the pun) unscathed because their core buyers don't care about the supposed "scandal".

And of course had that been the case here Paula Deen would have been just as unfazed.
 
I was ever so slightly sympathetic towards this woman, right up until the point where she tearfully said on TV, "I is what I is, and I ain't changing for nobody!"

I remember thinking, "Good god. She doubled down!"

3) "Yes, of course". Obviously, with the recent news of her damning testimony, where she not only admitted to having used the n-word in the past (which is the least offensive thing about her testimony, imo), but she also admitted to calling Obama the n-word, and of course, the whole "plantation wedding" thing, where she described being delighted by the sight of black people dressed up like slaves at a restaurant and wanting to use a similar theme for a wedding. She also admitted to using this kind of language and telling racist "jokes" at work, which was the whole reason she was deposed in the first place: subjecting her employees to racism and sexual harassment at her restaurants.

4) The porn. This is, by far, the most ludicrous thing to me. She states in her deposition that she "wouldn't be surprised" if her brother looked at porn while running the restaurant that she owns. She said her brother "would not look at that kind of thing [porn] if he was in the room with someone it would insult". I take this to mean that her brother did look at porn while at work, she knew that he would do this, and eventually a worker was rightly offended by this, and that's where the sexual harassment aspect comes from. In the cited article below (which you should read, it's amazing) it goes into more detail about the porn aspect, sexual jokes, innuendo, etc.

She was talking about the letter I.

You can prove this to yourself. Look around you. The letter I looks the same today as it did yesterday.

The woman is right, leave her alone. She's smarter than us.
