But will they cover it? is it advertising?

Self-promotion of a service being offered for remuneration? I don't care if it's a crud-o-rama website, offering guaranteed contact with the spirit world and asking for a fee? That's false advertising.

And let us remember, she alluded to this a number of times; that this might be the way to get the publicity she wants. She is a True Believer. She believes those are spirit voices and if the way to get the word out is to be dragged to court like a modern day Galileo, then she seemed to be saying this would not worry her. She is CERTAIN she's going to prove this and doesn't care about the money because world peace or something like that.

I would think it's one for the trading standards myself. Realistically I don't think the Great British public are in much imminent danger of being fleeced by flaccon but it's nice to see so many devoted to saving them.

One should never assume but I'm firmly in the camp that flaccon is a poor deluded soul who is more danger to herself rather than a calculating opportunist.

If only forced psychiatric evaluations could be dished out on the basis of documented (evidenced) irrational bahavior (online and offline) as displayed by flaccon and many such others ..... ;)

But unless obviously a danger physically to themselves or others, I can imagine that being counter-productive to the spread of coolly rational critical thinking.

The claims were made on her website, where she had a list of "guaranteed" results, such as contact with deceased loved ones (if I remember correctly), and clear answers to questions etc, and at the end she had said that amount of payment would depend on satisfaction or something like that.

As I have been very busy with other things during much of the thread I may have missed it ... where did she self-promote a service for remuneration?

On the very website we're discussing. There was no mention of a fee schedule but at one point it said (I paraphrase) "Fees will vary based on postal code". She was asked about this and confirmed that it had to do with the distance traveled.

Unless flaccon was being totally disingenuous -- and I don't think she was -- I think this bluesjnr's diagnosis is spot on.

Oh, I don't necessarily disagree in the least. I don't think she's trying to pad her bank account, I don't think she even understood that having that blurb on there constituted a "commercial offer" (for lack of a better term). She said as much in one post.

But the fact that I (and even if all of us) agree that she may be delusional does not really free her hand to put up false promises. I'm not worried about how much money she may get from someone. I'm concerned that if it's allowed to stay up with none of the traditional woo site disclaimers, it may be assumed by the gullible to be an indication that she's "the one". I think she's pretty low on the threat totem pole, but we all know that "What's the harm?" is b.s.

I was going to say something like this in my post, but couldn't find the words. You found them, FMW; thanks.

Seconded.
Claiming cats are Satan's minions, spawned to spread cancer amongst the unwary caught me my eye as well..

Well, sure. That one's believable.
Don't be silly: cats are no one's minions. Sure, they might sit in Satan's lap and purr a bit, but that's only because he radiates heat. As soon as he tries to rub their bellies, though, he's going to get bitten, just like mere mortals.

It must make one wonder; where does the phrase "a cat in hell's chance" come from?

I found 13 instances of "cat in hell" in Google Books from 1759-1820. All but two refer to said cat being "without claws".

I suspect it was a long-standing spoken idiom before turning up in print - the idea being that Hell is assumed to be an exceptionally hostile environment. Although cats are remarkably well-adapted for survival (nine lives and all that), their claws are formidable weapons in that context.

In an earlier age where cats were largely expected to feed themselves by catching mice, etc., a cat would have a hard time surviving anywhere without its claws. It certainly wouldn't be expected to thrive in Hell.

What does "price varies according to postcodes" mean?
travel cost

Google cached homepage of flaccon's site has the statement:
(Please remind yourself that this is non-profitable)
which did not appear in Donn's post. I don't know whether flaccon added this later. However, Donn's post clearly showed a business aspect to chapter23.org.

Perhaps a complaint to the ASA could be meaningful, in case of recidivism.

...

I winked my statement out of being serious territory, but the objection you mention is an excellent one :)
