SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) -- Santa Monica College was placed on lockdown Friday due to an active shooter on campus, confirmed Los Angeles sheriff's officials.

The shooting was reported at the school campus shortly after noon. It was unclear how many shots were fired or exactly where but witnesses reported hearing shots in the school's library.

Sam Luster was preparing for a presentation in the school's library when he heard bullets.

"We didn't know what was happening until all the students at the entrance of the library started running down towards the bottom of the library," Luster said. He then took cover under a desk before heading towards the exit.

Near the exit, Luster says he heard multiple gun shots.

Sheriff's officials have confirmed multiple victims.

A second shooting was reported a few blocks east of the school's campus pn 21st Street. Three victims were reportedly shot and found in a vehicle about a block and a half away from the school.

Authorities say the gunman was down. His condition remains unknown.

The investigation is ongoing.

I think the shots of a second shooting were erroneous. Probably stemming from confusion about where the shots were coming from.

Suspect arrested, apparently no fatalities, perhaps 3 victims wounded.

Looks like it wasn't actually on the campus. Sounds like an attempted carjacking.

From the article:

"The incident began when a gunman tried to break into home near the two-year college and then set fire to another property, the Los Angeles Times and CBS Los Angeles reported.

One resident told KNX that she was shot in the shoulder after a gunman dressed in black with a semiautomatic weapon and ammunition belt opened fire as he stole a woman's car."

Very confused scene right now. The fog of battle.

From the link (which updates) posted previously:
A second shooting, believed to be related, was reported a few blocks east of the school's campus on 21st Street. An eyewitness told ABC7 cameraman Shawn McCarthy that a man dressed in black got out of a vehicle at a nearby intersection and started shooting indiscriminately.

Three victims were reportedly shot and found in a vehicle about a block and a half away from the school. Officials transported the victims to the UCLA Reagan Medical Center. Two remain in critical condition and one in serious condition, according to the hospital.

Shots were reported in numerous areas including 26th Street and Cloverfield Boulevard and 26th Street and Pico Boulevard.

California Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Denise Joslin says the suspect or suspects also shot at a bus traveling down Cloverfield Boulevard near Olympic Boulevard.

"Those calls that came in reported this shooter was armed with multiple weapons and was firing shots at vehicles and at a bus," said Joslin. "We believe there are injured parties on that bus as a result of the shooter."

This started just after 12 Noon and it's now what, 2 30 PM in California.

A woman and her mother, returning home from a nail salon, told a newsman, as they stopped for a light on Cloverfield Boulevard a "man dressed in black came out of nowhere and started firing a rifle."

One shot went through their windshield and shattered the passenger-side window. The daughter was riding shotgun and she escaped being shot though she was covered with broken glass. It was like, she said, "being in a movie."

Crazy!

We don't? Car-jacking is legal in CA? Shooting at someone is legal? News to me.

Your sarcasm meter is broken. California has arguably the toughest gun control in the nation. As you probably know, being from Santa Barbara.

Just wanted to pop in to let Mattus Maximus know I wasn't hit, so he can stop worrying.

Six victims are dead, police killed the gunman.
Apparently 2 of the dead got better, they're saying 4 now plus the gunman.

2 of them were relatives, it started out as a domestic incident. Some of the others shot were motorists he tried to carjack to get away. He then ran to the college campus, amazingly somehow the "gun free" school zone didn't deter him.

What makes you think it's meant to deter and not punish?

Shame there wasn't a CCW'er nearby with intense one-day training that could have stopped this.

Given that California's concealed carry issuance scheme is considered "May-Issue," and in LA county only the rich and/or well connected can even receive the application, chances of a bad actor encountering an armed civilian out and about is pretty slim.
