Merged Sylvia Browne: "You'll meet her (Amanda Berry) in heaven" / Sylvia Browne wrong again

I just did a Google News search for "sylvia browne".

"About 8,910 results."

That can't be good for Sylvia. :D

Absolutely! Although there are a number of old friends and relatives who whisper in my brain occaissionaly. They certainly have never said anything to Sylvia!
But if you believe they can whisper in your brain occasionally that means you also believe your deceased loved ones are indeed still alive and can communicate with you. For me, since I do believe that, it makes sense that they could also communicate with someone who has a special gift.

Or were you kidding?

I do believe she is a fake and she knows it. Definitely evil.

But, just for the sake of argument let's say she is deluded and really believes she has psychic abilities.

Let's not.

No one anywhere has successfully demonstrated psychic ability.

I am inclined to agree with you.

But, just for the sake of argument let's say she is deluded and really believes she has psychic abilities. If she were a good person, she would realize all the negative repercussions her huge mistakes caused. She would apologize profusely AND publicly state that she now realizes her psychic abilities are not as good as she thought they were and because of that she is retiring! If she doesn't do that (she won't) then she is still a horrible person.

If she were, she'd have taken Randi's direct challenge to her years ago, glowing with the anticipation of proving him wrong.

It's a false dichotomy to claim that Sylvia isn't also a villain because the kidnappers are villains.

And as for the topic of this thread, Sylvia is indeed the villain.

The threads have been split since I posted that. For the first two days, though, all discussion in SI&CE was forced into a thread that was being taken over by Sylvia. These posts are now in this thread.

I was going to ask you what you thought about the possibility that Sylvia was deluding herself. Some people have active imaginations and poor reasoning ability, it's possible she might think the vague stream-of-consciousness generated by her own mind is meaningful psychic ability.

I'm not sure her evasion of Randi's challenge really proves she knows, it could still be consistent with her poor reasoning ability and of course the way the challenge is structured would make it difficult for a necromancer to win.

But you obviously believe she does have enough self-awareness to realise she's a fraud. That's interesting.

I'm inclined to agree with chillzero. In watching Browne in numerous appearances on Montel, there's a cold calculation to her that points to contempt for her victim's gullibility. Most notably, in her complete lack of empathy. She also never defends her errors. Her attitude always seems to be, "If I say the WTC firefighter is in water, then take it or leave it. I don't care, because it's ******** anyway. If you're smart enough to see through it, then make way for the next person whi isn't."

Browne never feigns compassion, either. That points to cold calculation, too.

She knows she's a fraud. She just doesn't care. I doubt she cares when she gets caught out, either. She knows there will always be people who do believe her scam regardless.

Ahem.

You should credit Shakespeare when you paraphrase him. :D ;)

Ah...thanks. I honestly had no idea where that came from, although I knew it wasn't original to me (just couldn't recall the places I'd heard it before).

Seems it's a bit of an older joke than I expected :)

In a way, that's almost depressing. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Exactly what I think. :)
(and I used to tune in to Montel religiously to watch her, believing her, and wanting to use her as an example to non-believers).

Let us remember that the "psychic" performance was for entertainment purposes only. We can now ask the families: "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained??!"

Yes but, to be fair, I have never seen anywhere on Browne's stuff nor the Montel Williams Show, a "for entertainment purposes only" disclaimer.

Thanks, desertgal and Chillzero. I've never watched her and know little about it, but I wondered if she might be self-deluded. I appreciate an opinion from people in a position to make a judgement.

Not inclined to agree with you there...no true medium would ever participate in Randi's challenge.
Most of my "Top ten reasons why JE won't participate in the million dollar challenge" can be applied to other real mediums as well.

Sylvia Browne responds:

Sylvia Browne said:
"For more than 50 years as a spiritual psychic and guide, when called upon to either help authorities with missing person cases or to help families with questions about their loved ones, I have been more right than wrong. If ever there was a time to be grateful and relieved for being mistaken, this is that time. Only God is right all the time. My heart goes out to Amanda Berry, her family, the other victims and their families. I wish you a peaceful recovery." - Sylvia Browne

Sherry Cole, Amanda Berry's cousin reached out to Sylvia this morning to let her know that she supports her, loves her, knows Sylvia never claims to be 100% right, but wanted to let her know that she was accurate in her description of the perpetrators at the time.

"Our family in no way blames Sylvia. This doesn't change anything. We still love her and believe in her." * Sherry Cole
From: http://www.sylviabrowne.com/amanda-berry

I tried searching for information about Sherry Cole, but couldn't find any information to confirm or deny her tie to Berry.
