Because health care in the US is, sadly, a mostly for-profit endeavor and if he doesn't have insurance or his insurance has a lifetime maximum payout, he could be hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars in debt within weeks.

I hope that the hospitals donate or the government steps in and pays for the victims' care.

Not to get off topic, but conservatives will never allow this to happen in America, and if it does happen it will be some substandard and inferior version that will be obsolete from its first day of conception. Meaning it will be designed to fail to make it a future nonissue.

With that being said, it is a tragedy that this individuals have to provide for their own medical expenses at a time like this. This really illuminates a hole that continues to grow in American society. Especially since many of the victims are individuals who were participating for charitable causes. Shows you how much we value people who like the idea of community and sharing in this country, 0.

Many conservatives are willing to help people pay medical expenses, but they want the help to come from their churches filled with Jesus' love, and naturally to favor the members of those churches when it comes to dispensing generosity.

While there is something to be said for local control, there is more reason to favor a universal option. I think conservative opposition will require us to ease into it gradually, but I think we'll get there.

There was a fund set up to help victims of the bombing barely 24 hours after it happened; by the Massachusetts state government no less. I believe (although I'm not positive, mind) that the federal government was going to either contribute or set up a similar fund.

As of this point, apparently not -- at least not anything that's been made available for public consumption. Among the factors being bandied about are:

• The Chechen connection -- apparently Chechnya is considered a "training ground" for terrorists.
• Older brother spent 6 months recently in Russia, where he might have been "radicalized" in some way.
• One or both brothers posted Islamic fundy stuff in social media.
• Older brother may have been a follower of some radical Islamic nutcase.
• Younger brother apparently confided to friend that terrorism was OK in some circumstances.
• Older brother felt he didn't have any American friends or something.
• One or both brothers, as well as mother, were 9/11 Truthers.

I have no idea which, if any, was the root cause of the bombings. Maybe it was all of them, mixed together in some sort of toxic stew.

There really was nothing more to add to L.Y.S.'s post.

I suppose there are more details about how he got caught, where he was captured, details of the standoff etc.. But once you start asking for details we'll end up reitterating everything that's already been posted so you might as well just read the 400+ posts that you missed.

It would be nice if there were some social media/crowd sourced real time news feed that filtered out the noise and left the verified facts.
