Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

Eight year old child one of the confirmed dead. Heartbreaking. :(

The point is that there are individuals of all political stripes that are capable and have done horrific random attacks. Domestic groups are not usually the types to do this sort of thing. They tend to target specific political entities. This is a random attack at a world famous event. The purpose was terror for terrors sake and not a statement against a specific entity (that we know of at this time). I did not. Please read what I actually said. I don't know if this was domestic or foreign, or what brand of lunacy the perpetrator(s) ascribe to. I was simply responding to someone that saying something that I interpreted as faulty.

Small devices too,relatively small casualties,so unlikely to be al-queada.

My guess is organic (hydrogen or acetone peroxide based?) which would not be detected by sniffer dogs (it smells like bleach). HE (nitrogen based) doesn't make a fireball like that, that's the sign of an inefficient explosive (relatively speaking).

AQ has used those types of explosives in IED attacks in the past so I wouldn't put it past them for now.

Fair enough. All that I was saying was that we don't know so attributing this to any political side is much too early.

I am at work, with restricted internet access, so at the moment this thread is all I know - and that's enough to have knocked the stuffing out of me. I'm not american, I'm not going to know any of the victims (and I was accused of not being humane in the Maggie's Dead thread), but just the idea that anybody could do this to their fellow humans fills me with despair. It's cowardly and despicable.
 
BBC is talking to someone at the Boston Medical Centre who is reporting that the BMC has treated 8 or 9 amputees and that at least one bomb contained ballbearings.

Thanks for that,most recent AQ bomb I can recall was London bus bomb and it made a lot more damage than Boston,not to say it rules them out. Judging by recent times it would be more likely a lone wolf nutter.

Conspiracy theories abound of a "drill" being carried out today.

If someone is insane enough to do something like this, their political persuasion is irrelevant, as they would have a distorted view of any party.

This seems likely, from the pictures I've seen there are a lots of lower extremity wounds.

Agreed. Fact is, both extreme left and extreme right factions in the US are very capable of terrorist attacks.The right has been more active lately, but the left had it's share in the 70's.
