Merged Bigfoot: The Patterson Gimlin Film - Part 4

I think that was Discovery Correa, but I guess NG could have done something similar..

Footer tv shows are not something I would expect to take a look at the Patterson film. They often have their own Bigfoot agenda. But watch any National Geographic documentary on Bigfoot, and you'll see that a huge portion of it is dedicated to the film :)

I'm only aware of one National Geographic documentary on Bigfoot that focused on the PGF, and it was many years ago.

Which documentaries are you referring to ?

On the NatGeo site, a search for ' Roger Patterson ' turns up two hits; ' Bob Gimlin ' gets you one; no PGF footage.. I guess they don't want to pay the royalties..

Off topic: The "monkey" scene is the only part of 2001 I can stand.

On topic: The PGF may be poor quality, but Patty still looks like a bloke in a suit!

Rumour has it that Planet Of The Apes won an honorary Academy Award for John Chambers for his outstanding make-up achievement because the Academy thought that the apes in 2001: A Space Odyssey were real.

What's notable to me is the artistic professionalism when Gimlin is holding the camera. Smooth perfect panning away from the subject (Patterson) to show surrounding scenery. As if Gimlin had been trained in making a beautiful documentary with that specific camera.

Whoever was working the camera knew what they were doing - true.

At 2:34 the camera is panning around the hillside and then at 2:36 we get a jump to Patty's entrance. So the story is that Gimlin was filming everything up to 2:34, but it was Roger who started filming at 2:36?

No. Both are doing filming before Patty arrives. IMO, Roger is filming Bob on horseback before Patty.

But the scene composition and panning style is so similar that it looks like one single person is filming everything.

And all the shots (except for the creature walk) use a tripod, with, as you note, a trained person panning. At the 2:00 mark it looks to even have a subtle zoom pullback effect, though this may have been done with the film later.

So that's Bob on horseback with little Peanut (?) as the pack pony?

Some scenes have Roger pulling the packhorse and others show Bob. IMO, Roger is riding Peanuts and Bob is riding Chico (BH's horse).

Also IMO, there is no zoom or tripod. The zoom effect is a slight illusion and I see tiny elevation jiggles that suggest no tripod. Very good steady handheld work. The panning is almost never jerky or inconsistent. It's quality.

I've never been convinced that there isn't any editing however.

Greg Long's The Making of Bigfoot now has free previews available on Amazon and Google Books. I find it very amusing that the previews contain the answers to questions like "Why does Long write as if the PGF was real at the beginning?" and "Why did he set out to debunk the film?" that proponents throw out in an attempt to criticize the book. It also has lots of very interesting notes about Patterson and the PGF.

Speaking of the PGF, I found some notes about some never-realized films that tie into the discussion somewhat. First is an example of a prop from a never-completed film being altered and reused in something that actually got released. This has some interesting notes about finger extensions and planning special effects for a low budget film.

If you believe that Patty is a real Bigfoot and that Bigfoot goes into 4x4 mode, you've got a major problem. Why? Well, try imagining Patty casually sauntering around in the position shown here. Want to see that sort of thing in motion? I've got you covered.

More fun with Google Books:

Al Hodgson spoke with Patterson after 6:00 pm on the alleged filming date (and Patterson's "son of a buck" comment in regard to Patty).

The "depth" of the Blue Creek Mountain tracks and how Jerry Merritt might have revealed that Patterson and Gimlin did their filming earlier than was claimed.

More timeline woes.

Roger's bigfoot book cover.

Patterson couldn't mail the film details (also notes that bus delivery was out of the question and provides details on the pilot issue).

The "Florida law firm has the original PGF" story is proven BS?

Further proof that the claim Patterson didn't make a dime is nonsense.

As a special bonus, here's a citation for Gimlin claiming that they went to an airport to drop off the film (not from The Making of Bigfoot). That's funny, didn't he claim they went to a post office in other interviews?

There is some talk circulating in Ape Suit circles, that the body may be the Gemora suit, and the legs added by Patterson. Rumor is that the Gemora suit's chest was all messed up. Perhaps the boobs were used to cover that mess up. And the legs were hacked from the Morris suit. This would explain the thigh line.

I had always assumed the boobs were to make Patty female so as to not have deal with the anatomical issues of a male one.

Well there's a novel idea that's certainly never been entertained before..

No! Wait...

It has been entertained, but never confirmed that Gemora suits were possibly still around in the late 1960's.

It has also been confirmed that the suits were in extremely bad condition when they were sold. However the padding appliances that he used were not in bad shape. So for speculation, IF Patterson had a rotten Gemora suit, could he take a Morris suit, modify it to look like a Gemora suit, and put it on an Actor wearing the Gemora padding?

Or, on one of his trips to Hollywood, could he have examined the recently sold Gemora suit, and relegated it to memory? Would that be all a man of his crafty ability would need?
