Founder of Sea Shepherd Arrested in Germany

You're the one that called the whales intelligent, I'm pointing out what I think would be the consequences of intelligence.

So you are serious?

Dude... it doesn't matter how smart they are. If they can't out run ships, or harpoons, it wouldn't matter if they were aliens from another world!

Wow. I'm truly speechless that you (or anybody!) would think that they could actually fight back.

This whale slaughter is not taking place in International waters though, it is taking place in Australian Antactic Waters (part of Australia's EEZ) in a whale sanctuary.

I invite Paul and is crew to base their operations here in NZ, where he will fall outside the jurisdiction of US Courts. We are impervious to US bullying here!

ummmmm.... three words. Kim. Dot. Com.

I think the evidence is pretty clear that it's not risky at all.

I mean, you yourself just posted a list of species that have been hunted to extinction. Can you point to any one of them and say there's evidence that its extinction has put humanity at any significant risk of extinction?

Humanity messes with ecosystems all the time, and yet here we are, no more significantly at risk than we were 10,000 years ago.

Even the current estimates for the impact of anthropogenic global climate change seem to put it well within humanity's adaptability range. At this point, the only thing that would really put humanity's survival at risk would be wholesale destruction of the entire biosphere.

As much as I'd rather that all commerical whaling be a) justified by actual market demand, and b) sustainable, I don't see that hunting a given whale population to extinction is particularly risky for humanity's survival.

You seem to be advancing yet another variation of the 'whales are magic' argument. The loss of the atlas bear and the sea mink hasn't put humanity's survival at risk in any measurable way. But there's some whale species out there, that unbeknownst to us, in some way you can't describe or test or measure, is the key to humanity's survival?

I doubt it.

Wow, just Wow. I take it you have never heard of the Sixth Great Extintion Event? The one we are entering, if not already in right now. It is estimated that thousands of speices are being made extinict because of the direct or indirect activities of humans every year. Hunting, Habitat destruction, poplution, climate change. These things are wiping out speices at a faster rate that most of the previous extinction events. We are looking down the barrel of losing over 75% of the species on Earth and we might have as little as 300 years to stop and reverse it before the planet's ecosystems goes into an unstoppable collapse, perhaps less. And that is assuming we start working right now.

Just look around you. The sea's are becoming increasingly acidic killing off many of the species that fish use for food. With them gone, what happens to the food chain in the seas? Whales also provide a massive food source for sea life, the death of one providing food for thousands of sea creatures just as the death of one of the massive herbivores provided for entire ecosystems during Jurassic times, wipe them out, that food is gone, that ecosystem is gone.

Take a look on land. Sudden Colony Collapse and the Varroa Mite are wiping out bee colonies and hives all over the world, both native and domesticated. Without bees the fruit and vegetable crops we rely on are gone too. Even trees are being wiped out on an unpresedented scale, not just at the saws and axes of men, but by plant viruses and parasites that humans have spread about the planet.

In the last Great Extinction Events very few animals bigger then a hare survived, what makes you think that Humans are going to survive the next one, the one we are creating right now?

I don't care! it will happen after I'm dead, and at that point the sun can go hypergiant for all I care.

you people need to enjoy life a little bit more instead of looking for things to complain/be outraged about.

You really need to visit a slaughter house. Even the most humane and effective methods aren't 100% succesful.

I have.

You really need to visit a modern slaughter house, with modern equipment.

The Alliance Freezing works here in Richmond uses an electric shock system with a KFR of 1 in 220,000. That is near enough to 100% for me.

Fair enough, but look how that worked out for the US Government and for the NZ Government. And what about the SIS bosses who had to fall on their swords in the aftermath.

They are now all busily licking their wounds while Mr Dotcom is back in business, bigger than he was before (no pun intended).

After that fiasco, they will be thinking twice before allowing the self-appointed World Police to dictate our internal policies.

See I don't think you get it. If it's not stopped now, by us getting upset and outraged and doing something to stop it, there isn't going to be any life on this planet to enjoy.

Scientists thought that Global Climate Change was going to happen slower than it appears to be happenijng, now they are talking tipping points and accellerated change. The estimates on how long we have before we hit the tipping point on extiniction is unknown. Maybe 300 years, maybe longer, or maybe we are at a tipping point right now and we'll see the full extinction of species in our lifetimes, watching as people die of starvation and disease.

So nice to be totally oblivious to it all.

I sort of agree, except that I wouldn't put anything past Teflon John and his shonkey back room dealings. I'm constantly amazed that he manages to somehow hold nearly half the population in awe with his messianic charm and ability to lie with impunity.

fallacy and lies

climate change will change life as we know it, but it isn't going to wipe it out, not by a long shot.

sell that crazy somewhere else, we are all stocked up here

Climate change is already wiping out species. Corals for instance, massive sections of reefs are dying because the water is too hot and acidic for them, and with the reef, whole eco-systems are being devastated. Last year is was reported that less than 10% of the Carribean's coral reefs still had living cover on them.

Climate change is just one of the things causing extinictions though. Hunting, Habitat destruction, pollution, all play their part. Millions of tigers once roamed the dense jungles of South East Asia. Today the numbers are a few thousands, and the their jungle homes are sparse and decreasing rapidly. The drop in their numbers is from hunting and Habitat destruction.

More and more of our shore lines are becoming marine dead zones which are getting bigger and more common as we use more nitrates in fertilizers and polute the rivers and streams, taking the Oxygen from them and turning the waters into inhospitable zones were nothing can live.

We are busy killing all life on this planet as fast as we can, and the majority of people just don't give a damn. There is a cliff coming, and the current attitude of people who just want to "have a fun life" is driving us right at it with the accelerator jammed to the floor.

But hey, just excuse those of us who think that playing chicken with the only habitable planet we have is a rather bad idea.

your hyperbole is amusing, your fear mongering repulsive

reefs come and go, they will return again, the planet isn't going anywhere, all we are going to do is make our lives uncomfortable for a bit, but we will adapt, and overcome, it's what we do
those other animals who can adapt will get to come along for the ride. those that can't will go extinct.

that's how it works.

Except it's not just me. This is what the world's eminent climate scientists, biologists, bio-diversity scientists, ecologists, and enviromental scientists are telling us, but hey why believe them, after all they are only the experts who have studied it.

Somehow I get this vision of a bunch of triceratops watching a meteor shower overhead and one saying...

"Hey don't worry, it's just a pretty light show, the planet isn't going anywhere, and even if the worst happens, we will adapt, and overcome, it's what we do, after all we've been doing it for 135 million years. Those other animals who can adapt will get to come along for the ride. those that can't will go extinct, no biggy, that's how it works."

they couldn't adapt to humans, they died, life goes on.

this emotional attachment to animal life is amusing to me. I call it the "fuzzy factor" you don't see too many people raising hell about reptiles, bugs and other such creepy crawlies, but give them a cute face and a sad backstory and they will spend billions of dollars ramming their boats into the "offenders" at high speed, while blubbering incessantly about how much they care!

I think those sorts of people are hilariously retarded!!!

Right... Never mind things like the Tasmanian ecosystem potentially going out of whack because we hunted the Apex Predator to extinction, shortly followed by the Tasmanian Devil becoming endangered due to an extremely nasty Parasitic Cancer which cropped up in the 1990's.

you are looking at things in wayyyy too short a timescale. (and this is the flaw most humans make when talking about these types of things)

we could wipe out every single living thing on the face of Tasmania, then walk away from the smoldering rock left, then come back in a tiny bit of time, say 500,000 years, and life would be swarming there.

My big thing about all this is that people buy into these "sky is falling" claims, without looking at the geologic time scale of it all. It's all fear mongering and THE EARTH IS DYING OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it isn't, people need to get a grip.

It's not that I think their data is incorrect , nor am I denying any sort of climate change. I AM saying that people are using this data to push agendas that aren't based on reality.

it was once warmer than it is now, there was once more CO2 in the atmosphere than there is now, and there was life in the oceans and on the land too, probably more bio-diversity as well.

This is about people, comfort and "fluffy cute animals" plain and simple. It's selfish driven, delusional, anthropomorphic nonsense.

Dinosaurs were on the way out long before the asteroid hit btw, so your amusing attempt to be a jerk fell flat on it's face.

Nice try though, why don't you just kick my dog next time.
