Merged Bigfoot follies

In honor of Martin Gardner, the father of modern skepticism, who always believed that the "horse laugh" (ridicule) had a place in skeptical appraisals, I offer the following classification system.

This is a system to identify and catalog professional Bigfooters.

1. Jackass. The Jackass is the professional who is honest to himself in his advocacy, but stubborn as a mule and blind as a bat when it comes to addressing the manifold problems in advancing belief in monstrous, bipedal apes native to North America, or giant feral human tribes living therein.

2. Jackal. The Jackal knows the Bigfoot story is all show and no substance and has entered into the world of Bigfootery as a con-artist, working the angles and striving to separate grassroot Bigfooters from their working class money.

3. Jackalope. The Jackalope is from the land of Woo. He believes the Enlightenment was a big mistake and wants to erase the scientific revolution and take us back to the time of dragons and elves, the woodwose and the unicorn, where folklore and myth are reality. Why? Because - real reality is boring.

Of coarse, these categories may, from time to time, mate with one another to create hybrids.

Three examples (imo):

Meldrum is a Jackass. He honestly believes he is contributing to our knowledge base. He formed his opinion of the Bigfoot issue when, as a teenager, Roger Patterson's film converted him. He has stubbornly retained this belief all through his life, even becoming a scientist in order to promulgate his belief in North America's giant ape.

Moneymaker may bray like an ass, but he is really a Jackal. He is a skilled carny, a barker that draws a crowd and entices it to enter the tent -- for a fee.

Redfern is the Prince of Woo and a proud Jackalope. Nothing is too incredible for Nick not to champion. In fact, the more incredible it is, the more credible it is to NR. Such is the lure of the endarkenment.

jerrywayne,

I would say jeffey meldrum is playing a part. He has TV money and speaking fees and cast sales to lose if he admits BF is a fraud.

He may have started out believing in BF. Now, IMHO, he's in it for the $ and the "fame".

Now that Grover is on dispaly in the Smithsonian, d jeffey meldrum is the high priest of bigfootery.

O.K. Just curious. How many folks here see Meldrum as a Jackal instead of a Jackass? Ketchum the same? Where does Green fit? Etc.? Any hybrids?

Refresh: Are you saying all professional Bigfooters are insincere, just playing a part?

Are you saying that you can tell the sincere ones from the actors?

Keep in mind that this is not some kind of division between honest people and dishonest people... this is specifically about Bigfoot.

I think that some honest people will tell lies about Bigfoot. When asked if they are lying, they will respond that they are not. But they are lying about Bigfoot. These are decent people who have found some joy in telling lies related to Bigfoot and their belief.

This is a system to identify and catalog professional Bigfooters.

When you say professional you mean that they are doing it as a paid profession, paid occupation, paid job, etc. Not just devoted but that they are doing it for a living, right?

jerrywayne,

TheMelba reportedly fleeced 400K from a fool. How much ended in her pocket? I would suspect a large % went directly into her pocket to pay her "salary" for working on the project. It is obvious what that makes TheMelba. I put all "name" footers - Green, Noll, etc into the same catagory.

BooBoo Faye may be the only name footer out there who is dumb enuff to believe BF exists. At least that's how he comes across on the TV show. In real life he may very well be like all the others.

Sorry guys. Once, many moons ago, I thought Bigfoot probably existed. I was enchanted. So, I know what it is like to be a Bigfooter.

I'll say what I said before, upstream somewhere. It is a BIG mistake to explain Bigfooters as simple liars and liars for profit. To reduce all of the phenomena to simple deceit is, well, vacuous.

Because Meldrum makes some money on Bigfoot, that does not mean he does not believe in Bigfoot. Where is the logical necessity connecting the making of money with non-belief? If you say his arguments don't hold water, fine. I agree. But that doesn't mean he thinks his arguments don't hold water.

Now, over the years with the explosion of internet based sighting reports, I would say that the percentage of deceit has moved upward. But to say the whole thing is comprised of liars lying for fun and profit is, in my opinion, the easy out.

And by professionals, I mean the writers, scientists, field researchers, and others who spend serious parts of their lives trying to advance belief in Bigfoot. Some make money off their endeavors, others do not.

I can agree that not all are in it for $ and know BF is BS, I still know plenty of folks that swear the thing is real, one even worked with melba and left because he was sure she was full of it, there are very true and honest believers out there, that's not to say they would not stretch the truth at times, the folks I am talking about don't go in for the habituation stuff at all, they swear that BF is real because they have seen it or experienced something associated with BF behavior, there certainly are many different BF camps out there, thing is they just have that one main forum that Caters to all things BF so that's where they go to be with like minded people.

Let me add: I don't have any problem melting them all together cause BF is just a crock, so it don't matter if one thinks they have seen it or is using others for profit from it, they all share a delusion and suffer from some sort of social disorder or other name for being deaf, dumb, blind, greedy and dishonest one way or the the other.

There have to be some believers for the liars to profit from. Saying that however, it has to be noted that believers are part and parcel in the duplicity; they are the ones to make the excuses to maintain belief. The con-men then exploit the excuses to continue the con. Right symbiotic that is.

LMAO ~ Some people just don't live in reality, this is hot off the bff.

Geez, I take some time away and wouldn't you know it...all Hades breaks loose!

Ok, after plowing my way through over a dozen pages (and more than 20 yet to go), I'm going to assume the "downstream" pages are more of the same back and forth.

So, what have we got?

As I predicted some time ago:

1) Ketchum probably has DNA indicative of a new primate species.

2) Ketchum over-claimed her paper, which also had some technical issues.

3) "Legitimate" (translation: Skeptic-approved) journals didn't take it seriously from the get go and she had to go around them to publish.

4) Skeptics are having a field day screeching and throwing poo at the study, which they have no intention of actually reading, or attempting any scientific work to counter the claims of the study.

Have I missed anything?

The next step needs to be "naming and shaming" all the so-called "legitimate" journals and reviewers who failed their duty to honestly and ethically evaluate the paper in an impartial manner.

Mulder always speaks as if he knows exactly what happened, his bias screams daily.

I may need to stop copy and pasting. I received quite a hefty warn over there just recently. The staff there seems to take moderation pretty seriously. To the point where the administrators will occasionally ban each other...

I told you OS, they are lurking here and will get you for C&P their material.

This person misses quite a bit.

O ya it's totally comical, I don't think his word is taken as gospel as much as it used to, this Ketchum has been a real test for everyone and he has just been so out of touch with what's going on, he even admits it but still continues to voice an opinion, IMHO he is losing his fan base with every word.

You are in a crowd with some very disturbed and paranoid folks, if you ain't already part of the problem, ( I have my suspicions) be careful and don't get caught up in their world, I speak from experience and am part of a crowd that has already been there done that, many here have been on the old bff team and know the mentality, we are here cause we didn't agree or just didn't like the way the BF world works.

When Chris Noel treated Mulder as if he's an expert on DNA, I thought to myself: what the frigging heck!?

Noel now has a book in which he swallows both Ketchum and Dyer whole.

Now it all makes sense.

You are in a crowd with some very disturbed and paranoid folks . . .
Tim :)

There exists a thread regarding Bigfoot V Bear in which a proponent proposes a 15 ft Sasquatch. Throwing a pig hell, that thing could throw a bear.

Now wonder these people take Melba Ketchum (DVM) seriously.
