In honor of Martin Gardner, the father of modern skepticism, who always believed that the "horse laugh" (ridicule) had a place in skeptical appraisals, I offer the following classification system.
This is a system to identify and catalog professional Bigfooters.
1. Jackass. The Jackass is the professional who is honest to himself in his advocacy, but stubborn as a mule and blind as a bat when it comes to addressing the manifold problems in advancing belief in monstrous, bipedal apes native to North America, or giant feral human tribes living therein.
2. Jackal. The Jackal knows the Bigfoot story is all show and no substance and has entered into the world of Bigfootery as a con-artist, working the angles and striving to separate grassroot Bigfooters from their working class money.
3. Jackalope. The Jackalope is from the land of Woo. He believes the Enlightenment was a big mistake and wants to erase the scientific revolution and take us back to the time of dragons and elves, the woodwose and the unicorn, where folklore and myth are reality. Why? Because - real reality is boring.
Of coarse, these categories may, from time to time, mate with one another to create hybrids.
Three examples (imo):
Meldrum is a Jackass. He honestly believes he is contributing to our knowledge base. He formed his opinion of the Bigfoot issue when, as a teenager, Roger Patterson's film converted him. He has stubbornly retained this belief all through his life, even becoming a scientist in order to promulgate his belief in North America's giant ape.
Moneymaker may bray like an ass, but he is really a Jackal. He is a skilled carny, a barker that draws a crowd and entices it to enter the tent -- for a fee.
Redfern is the Prince of Woo and a proud Jackalope. Nothing is too incredible for Nick not to champion. In fact, the more incredible it is, the more credible it is to NR. Such is the lure of the endarkenment.
