New book on Scientology: Going Clear

About One Third into Wright's book now.
Wow.Just Wow. I pretty much thought that Hubbard was just a con man milking the suckers, but Wright presents some strong evidence that Hubbard eventually bought into a lot of the crap he was pushing. Not that makes Hubbard any less reprehensible, though.
As a ex US Service man, I found Hubbard's attempt to fake a heroic war record to be particulary reprehensible.

To be fair, he did fire on Mexico quite heroically.

He probably didn't think he was really faking since he would have done those things if his short sighted commanders had let him.

If anyone still requires proof of just how much of a lunatic Hubbard was, check out the latest piece on The Underground Bunker. A recording and transcript of a lecture by Hubbard where he suggests that 'clears' can bring people back from the dead.

It is a very good example of just how crazy the guy was (VERY!), although there are endless others of course.

Enjoy! Or just marvel at how anyone ever fell for his schtick, or indeed still does:

I recall Martin Gardner saying that he had originally thought of Hubbard as a straightforward con man, but that he had changed his mind and considered him a dangerous psychotic.

This back when Hubbard was still alive.

Of course Clears can bring back people from the dead! The only problem is that LRon, Dianetics and the Church of $cumology have never managed to create one.

I've repeatedly asked our local tame Scientologist (taking his turn in the JREF barrel) to show us one; with no response.

They don't seem to have much staying power, your average Christan fundie can go 30 to 40 pages without breaking a sweat but Scientologists fade fast.

One of the funniest parts in Going Clear was when L. Ron Hubbard presented the world's first "Clear" to an auditorium full of people. She had perfect recall and memory! But when LRH was turned around couldn't tell people what color his tie was. Nor could she answer a host of other simple questions.

A huge public embarrassment.

The second Clear he publicly presented turned out to be gay. That's a problem when homosexuality, according to LRH, is a perversion caused by the "reactive mind"...something Clears have gotten rid of.

Lisa McPherson was also supposed to be a clear, as were the people who let her die. Yes, being a clear is a bit over rated.

And Wright also offers evidence that Tom Cruise is not a popular, nieve, actor being exploited by the powers that be in the CO$ but that he IS one of the powers that be in the C0$ and except for Miscivage Cruise might be the most powerful single individual in the church. Tommy boy does not emerge looking good in this book.....

I just hope they don't call him short. That is mean.

I think that his best ever performance was in Magnolia playing a guru/charlatan snakeoil motivational speaker and yet somehow I can believe that this was his "truest" performance.

Do you know if he does Scientology promotional talks?

I really miss Tommy boy. For me, he evinced all the evil inherent in Scientology. Whenever I saw him in a video I wanted to point at him and ask, "Is this what you aspire to be? Really?"

Time to bring back the slippery, slimy, energetic little turd: The Face of Scientology.

Yes. He has given several speeches to Sceintology groups about how the CO$ is the answer to all the world;s problems.

Yeah, the divorce from Katie Holmes seems to have taken the wind out of Tommy.
If you want proof about how damaging the CO$ can be, Cruise's two marraiges, in which the insanity of the CO$ seems to have played a major row in ending both, should be proof of that.
And that both Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes are drop dead gorgeous just makes it more insane.

I meant the other "Tommy" -- Tommy Davis, sometimes spokesperson for Scientology. Here's a good example of him in action (skip to 3:40): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDES0VXlmFI

Love that guy.

[ETA] Even better, a compilation clip of Tommy's best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG2ug3acXok
I wonder if there's an address I can send fan letter to?

And here's an Australian TV show asking the same question as me, "What happened to Tommy Davis?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67Jx9KG0VeU
"The smiler with a knife beneath his cloak."

That's whom I thought you were referring to. As the book mentions, he started being referred to as "Tommy" within the church precisely to avoid confusion with Tom C., whom I assume nobody in the church would dare to call Tommy.

Wonder what's behind his not being the face of the Co$ anymore. Could he be experiencing some doubts, despite the denials, or is it something else?

I found a good thread on it here: http://tonyortega.org/2012/10/24/tommy-davis-no-longer-a-scientology-spokesman/comment-page-1/

The consensus seems to be he's out but wealthy enough and still enough of a believer that he is both immune from typical Scientology attacks and not really a threat anyhow.

Still, if anyone has his address, I'd like to write him a fan letter.
