Chuck Hagel about to wipe Israel off the map?

Log Cabin GOP buys anti-Chuck Hagel ad

A group of gay Republicans took out a full-page ad in Thursday’s New York Times, lambasting potential defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel for opposing an ambassador’s nomination in 1998 because he was “openly, aggressively gay.”
“Chuck Hagel: Wrong on gay rights, wrong on Iran, wrong on Israel,” the ad from the Log Cabin Republicans reads inside the A section. “Tell President Obama that Chuck Hagel is wrong for Defense Secretary. Help us create a stronger and more inclusive Republican Party.”

. . .

Hagel publicly apologized for remarks he made in reference to James Hormel, who was Bill Clinton’s pick for ambassador to Luxembourg, in a statement issued last week.

If Obama is going to nominate him, maybe he should do it soon.

There's been pushback on the other side too. Andrew Sullivan, who is gay, has defended him. Others too.

Can anyone think of any person Obama could nominate that the right wouldn't object to?

Ever notice how Obama doesn’t have the guts to first nominate someone and then stand by that decision. He leaks the name and then sees what flack hits them.

Okey now our resident anti-semite has turned up.

It looks like Hagel will be nominated and I hope the Jews pull out all stops in opposing him. A national confrontation between the Jews and a decorated Vietnam veteran is what this country needs. The Jews always overplay their hand. People who never gave a thought about the Jewish lobby are about to get an education.

If Obama were to nominate George C Marshall as Secratary Of Defense , the Right Wing would be against him.
Hagel is not my first choice, but the "charges" against him are silly.

The Emergency Committee for Israel (ECI), a pro-Israel group, has purchased the domain name, www.ChuckHagel.com, to warn against President Obama's nomination of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel (Neb.) for Defense secretary.

The website is urging people to contact their senators and persuade them to block the confirmation of Hagel.

Not to defend or excuse his remarks, but the country as a whole has come a long way on gay rights in the last 14 years. My own position has evolved considerably in that time span. Perhaps Hagel's position has evolved too.

Mine hasn't evolved. Been a libertarian a lot longer than 14 years. One hopes for Hagel welcome to the club, but somehow had this been a Republican president nominating him, the outrage would be even larger. Try and look in the mirror and tell yourself it wouldn't.

It does exist on the left, though. Good!

Standard operating procedure for at least two decades. SNL had a joke once where Dana Carvey as Bush, Sr., said "Gonna take a poll. Find out what I think.", and Clinton basically invented the term "trial balloon".

Nothing new to see here, move along folks, move along.

I would like to see Chuck Hagel win the nom.

I would like to see the smear campaign exposed for what it is: crap.

You will be, of course, happy to name those resident anti-semites. Right?

"Anti-semite," in this context, is anyone who slightly deviates from the GOP's view of Israel's security needs. Never mind that a large portion of the Israeli polity, from the Knesset to major newspapers, also diverge from that view, and by the same logic are anti-semites.

Ambassador Bhadrakumar allows himself to get a bit carried away and dream of a "real" Obama we haven't yet seen since he's President. I'll believe it when I see it. Anyway, good on him for not caving in to the neo-con pressure.

Hagel can reveal the 'real' Obama

Asia Times said:
[...] Hagel is an extraordinary person for the US president to walk with at this point in America's trajectory as the world's lone superpower with a military budget that outstrips the rest of the world combined.

Obama underscored it by saying his choice of Hagel is "historic", since the former senator would be the "first from the enlisted ranks" to serve as secretary of defense and "one of the few secretaries who have been wounded in war" who would know "war is not an abstraction... [he] understands that sending young Americans to fight and bleed in the dirt and mud, that's something we only do when it's absolutely necessary." [...]

Showdown: Chuck Hagel blocked: Harry Reid doesn’t have the votes

Politico said:
The Senate was set to vote at 4:15 on Thursday afternoon to end debate over the nomination of Chuck Hagel — a vote that appeared likely to fail, but which Democratic leaders wanted in order to try to cast Republicans as obstructionist.

Hagel’s path to the Pentagon struck a major roadblock on Thursday when Senate Democrats appeared short of the 60 votes needed to move forward, throwing the nomination into limbo as Congress prepared to skip town for a weeklong recess. [...]
