School shooting: but don't mention guns!

I wonder if the anti-gun people notice how much they sound like Pro-lifers? It's the same appeal to emotion, irrational fear mongering, and both based on "think of the children!!!!"

equally useless

Canada implemented similar laws many years ago. This year's most recent shootings in Toronto revealed that the gang-bangers still weren't complying.

What now? Try a three round limit with a 'we-really-mean-it-this-time' clause???

Groovy.

Lets do nothing then. Don't talk about change, don't imply change, nothing. Just ignore it. It'll go away!

Let's have a law that all semi-automatic firearms come only in multicolour pastel shades with happy-faces painted on the muzzle.

There's your deterrent. Seems plausible...
I was going to suggest something similar, but I figured it would only lead to people buying a silly looking gun, a box of ammo, and a can of spray paint.

The point being that the Americans are now seriously considering implementing laws that the Canadians already know don't work, or more specifically work only to bolster the illusion of increased public safety.

If a smoke-and-mirrors political facade is the real goal, then I'll just stop myself now...

Single shot pistols, rifles, and shotguns are actually very popular with hunters in the US, and are very common.

For that matter there's a whole season devoted to hunting deer with bow and arrow.

Argument by insult. Exactly what this thread didn't need.

I have been listening to nothing but anti-american insults in most of these threads. irrational arguments, appeals to emotion. so I'm not supposed to mention them?

would you allow this method of argument to fly in any other thread?

I wouldn't.

I've seen plenty of posts here and in other recent gun threads questioning the sanity and intentions of people who want to own semi-automatic firearms, telling them to get new hobbies and give up their "toys", and claims outright that they have blood on their hands. I've seen loaded questions get honest answers only to have the questions repeated by the same people.

You're just finding fault with the level of discourse now?

When people get emotionally invested in any given subject critical thinking seems to be one of the first casualties.

There are several threads on this forum, and several threads on the same subject in the Politics forum. No doubt an individual could spend several lifetimes reading all the posts about this subject on every forum.

I'd guess that the vast majority of all of that 'discussion' boils down to fear mongering, appeal to emotion, etc etc. Both from anti-gun advocates and pro-gun advocates.

Actually figuring out sensible changes to gun control laws, getting them implemented and enforcing them looks to be a hideously complex and nigh on impossible task :(

You might recall reading several posts back about the agenda to make the private ownership of firearms 'socially unacceptable' in order to suppress a perceived 'gun culture'. Badgering the responsible, law abiding firearm owner and the vilification of those who've committed no crime seems to be the popular tactics. As someone had mentioned, they feel inexplicable shame for just owning a firearm.

Apparently, it's working...

Gun nuts accusing those that want gun controls of just being emotional is high on the irony meter.

How many go the gun owners here are a member of a well regulated militia?

Seems a nice easy solution. Only allow guns to people who are.

Sure, it seems easy until you start defining "regulated" and then "well regulated" and then "militia". Believe me, you don't want to even go anywhere near there.:D

Before you know it, every able bodied man will be slinging a BAR over their shoulder at the Denny's. ;)

There are several posters who haven't. Maybe the majority. Certainly not my posts.

Canada has had a handgun registry since 1934. The reason for maintaining the registry is to deter the criminal use of handguns. The bad guys still aren't taking it too seriously.

Despite all the laws, rules, regulations, prohibitions and restrictions, apparently any clown can still get one...

Canada does share the longest undefended border in the world with a country that has very lax gun control laws. How many criminal guns in Canada come from the US, does anyone have figures?
