As I have already indicated, it is simply my understanding based on memory that several of the recent massacres were perpetrated by people who were receiving mental health services, many of them since they were children. I was under the impression that many of these same people were able to legally purchase firearms which they then used for their rampages. I could be wrong; I don't think that I am though.

So, the untreated mentally ill could own guns, but if they chose treatment, they'd give up that right.

Yes, I wondered this too. Violence is often (sometimes anyway) a feature at European football matches, yet I don't hear of violence at US sports matches.

As I indicated earlier (again), the alleged stigma currently attached to mental illness has not stopped millions from seeking treatment. So I am dubious that this would have the effect you claim it would.

Has the inability of a convicted felon to legally own a firearm impacted the commission of felonies?

Having seen them up close, I believe that the westboro bunch has a specific MO, one that I believe they utilize for the sole purpose of inciting violent reaction against them, in order to file civil suits against the perps, the LEA in the jurisdiction that fails to protect them etc.

I don't wish them any ill will.

I just wish they'd all die in a fire.

How can you possibly know this for an objective fact?

Of those arrested for DUI who did cause a fatality or property damage, are you under the impression that they knew they would most likely cause an accident and deliberately went driving anyway, or is it more commonly the case that they were operating under the assumption that they "knew how much alcohol they could drive safely on"?

How could I possibly know whether I (mutatis mutandis) was likely to kill people? Well, I could ask myself. I just did. It's not going to happen. I have no anger issues. I am never violent, nor do I ever feel the need for violence; indeed I abhor violence in pretty much every case. I have never either shown nor felt any desire to do myself any harm, and certainly never contemplated suicide as an option. There have never been any indications that I am a danger either to myself or to others. But you would recommend denying me a right that would be given to others.

As has been asked, does 'psychoactive drugs' include alcohol? I strongly suspect that a lot of firearm killings are under the influence of alcohol. There are thousands of alcoholics about, but unless they're actively seeking treatment, there's nothing to stop them getting weapons.

I have suspected this for years as well. Their pattern of behavior suggests they are gypsy style con artists rather than any sort of religious group. So they do and say reprehensible things, with the 1st amendment as a crutch, hoping to be assaulted so they can then sue for damages.

If there is one group in all of the USA that can unite people on the left and right to say "screw these clowns" it's the Westboro Baptist Church.

Well it's either amount of guns, or americans have more murdering maniacs then the rest, and nothing will help them. I would try it. Rest of the world can live with licenses for guns, why can't you ? Maybe it would save 1 life.

Americans do require a license to purchase and/or own a handgun. Long guns do not require a license, but a criminal background check is required.

Yeah. How it works: the US Goverment sells tens of thousands of guns through Foreign Military Sales to south of the border governmnets, some of those guns get diverted to the black market.

I believe so. At least compared to Western Europe. Also non-gun homicides are far higher in the US as well. I hate to be a jerk about it but you'll have to look it up yourself because I don't feel like googling at the moment. I'm too full of lasagna and booze at the moment.

Is this because you are a felon or what? As far as I know there are no laws preventing a non-felon from owning a firearm. I owned a few guns when I lived in CA (and bought two, legally, while living there).

There are several disqualifying conditions other than felony conviction.

Ah, that's new to me. I haven't lived there since '05, and I'd never even considered the medical marijuana issue. I suppose it makes sense. My ex used to get rather violent when she was high (which at the end was 24/7), though I know it doesn't effect most people that way.

Thoughts from another naive European.

You already have gun control in the US. A US citizen can't go out and arm themselves with the latest fully automatic weaponry. You can't get yourselves mini guns.

I don't understand how the government couldn't shift the bar to say, for example, semi-auto weapons are now effectively banned or handguns over a certain calibre are now banned, in the same way that full auto weapons are presently controlled. You could do that without affecting the rights you have under the 2nd Amendment (at least no moreso than is already the case)
