I would like to see how it was the semi-automatics that were doing all the killing....
Is there a gang problem in Australia?
One mass shooting iirc.
One nutter moves a nation.
How quaint.

The Queen Street massacre was a spree-killing-suicide that occurred on 8 December 1987 at the Australia Post offices at 191 Queen Street in Melbourne, Victoria. The attack resulted in nine fatalities, including the perpetrator, and five injuries
The shootings resulted in the deaths of seven people, and serious injury to 19 others.[2] After a police chase lasting more than 30 minutes, 19-year-old former Australian Army officer cadet Julian Knight was caught in nearby Fitzroy North and arrested for the shootings.
The Port Arthur massacre of 28 April 1996 was a killing spree in which 35 people were killed and 23 wounded, mainly at the historic[1] Port Arthur prison colony, a popular tourist site in south-eastern Tasmania, Australia.[2] Martin Bryant, a 28-year-old from New Town, a suburb of Hobart, eventually pleaded guilty to the crimes and was given 35 life sentences without possibility of parole.[3] He is now imprisoned in the Wilfred Lopes Centre near Risdon Prison.

I'm not making it up. In a short period before the ban, there were three massacres involving semi-automatics, two in my city:

And the straw that broke the camel's back, Port Arthur:

Somebody I worked with was killed at Port Arthur.
There has been nothing remotely like these massacres since the ban.
What is the purpose of these assault weapons? We have the right to bear arms but does that mean everyone should be able to own a nuke?
These crazies pull the trigger in a matter of seconds and mow down a room full of people. What is the reason for anyone to own such a weapon?
Interesting to note the coincidence:
- China: 22 schoolchildren HURT when nut-case goes on STABBING spree.
- Gun ownership in China…. about 5 / 100
- United States: 20 schoolchildren DEAD when nut-case goes on SHOOTING spree
- Gun ownership in USA…. about 89 / 100
Amazing how anyone can keep a straight face and still argue that availability has nothing to do with it. Simple fact is…there are nut-cases everywhere. A nut-case with a gun can kill dozens…even hundreds, in a fit of anger. A nut-case with a kitchen knife MIGHT hurt a few folks before he gets clobbered.
…but lets all keep sticking our heads in the sand.
well considering your small population I would be surprised if you had these types of things as often as they happen here. When it happens again (and it will) what will you blame then? and do you think that if the killers in the above events had bolt action rifles and revolvers they wouldn't have done the crimes?
An assault weapon wasn't used.Assault weapons make it too easy.
because mass murders are worth letting people own guns because guns are cool
16 years without a massacre is a mighty fine return for the inconvenience of a relative few. If you actually read the links, or knew anything about the crimes, you would see that the massacres, if they did happen without semi-automatics (which is unlikely) would not have resulted in the same carnage, particularly in Port Arthur.
20 kids are not going to be killed with a knife in a matter of seconds.
I'm still happy I don't live in your repressive little country
It seems to me that the reality is that approximately 20 young children and several of their adult teachers are dead today because of the proliferance and ready accessibility of guns in the U.S.
I realize that there is a certain sub-set of USians who feel that their constitutional "right to bear arms" should trump all other rights, but when that conflicts with every other USian's constitutional right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness", shouldn't the latter prevail?
(Yes, I am being deliberately provocative here, but let's see where it goes.)

A series of uncoordinated mass stabbings, hammer attacks, and cleaver attacks in the People's Republic of China began in March 2010. The spate of attacks left at least 21 dead and some 90 injured. Analysts have blamed mental health problems caused by rapid social change for the rise in these kind of mass murder and murder-suicide incidents.
