School shooting: but don't mention guns!

That seems a bit unreasonable!

I think too many people view these sorts of things through their own POV exclusively "I'm not crazy, I want to be able to own any gun I want" and forget that there are people who are crazy out there.

Not wanting to create too much of a derail here but I have noticed this is a real problem in general with libertarians.

I just heard about this when my wife came home and told me.

If I was the parent of one of these kids killed... my heart goes out to them.

Is this an issue of guns laws or lack of healthcare for mental illness? Why are these sick people able to so readily get guns? The nutcase from Colorado had enough ammo to take over a small country and purchased it on the internet.

I've asked some gun advocates why they need a gun that can spray 50 bullets in a minute. What war are they gearing up for?

Well there are the new super animals like the flying squirrel that we need to worry about.

Its time for America to face up to it. I'm a liberal but have always believed that Americans have a right to own a gun and defend their home if need be. However I don't own a gun and probably never will.

But these shootings are getting crazy. I am alarmed by how available the lax gun control in this country lets crazies commit this kind of crime. In my opinion the NRA is to blame.

I have a 9 year old son and could never imagine him being murdered in such a senseless way. What those poor parents are going through right now is inconceivable to me. But why does this happen?

people are selfish.... and selfish people who feel they have nothing to lose are dangerous

How can ownership of an assault rifle be justified? They are designed to kill a lot of people very quickly. Why would anybody want to own a weapon like this?

Because they are fun to shoot, accurate, don't require a lot of reloading, and pretty cool.

I said there was no loophole.

I didn't say people do not break the law.

People break the law.

Enforce the law.

How about enact and enforce a real gun law? Because some people are just crazy. And for some reason a lot of them love guns.

Perhaps if his mother was trained on how to keep control of her gun and keep it secure.
Maybe, if she had some reason to suspect her son was this unstable. If she didn't, she might very well have unlocked the gun safe herself and handed it to him.

Mike Huckabee has responded to today's wickedness with an observation that is so goddamned idiotic that I shall for the foresseable future refer to him by his title, which is unmentionable but which rhymes with "gas soul."

I guess Ol' Mike has not heard about the election of November,in which voters..including many who usually vote Republican.....gave the Religious right candidates a huge kick in the butt. (Like in Missouri where voters went heavily for Romney in the presidential election, but by almost exactly the same percentage went for the Democrat over a religious right nutcase).

Huckabee's statment is of a level of stupid I,like Brown, cannot begin to express my contempt for without violating the JREF TOS agreement.

Well one, gun trafficking is already a nice business for gangs in the US. And secondly, what country that had a lot of guns and space banned guns for civilians and it decreased the gang violence? Seriously, which one? Did any of them have appreciable gang violence in the first place?

The US isn't like a lot of places. That's kind of the point. There are already a ton of guns, with a spread out populace, who knows how to produce guns even if they are taken away, with two countries with HUGE boarders who haven't outlawed guns, and already has gang problems. That's without the cultural aspects to boot.

Do you contend that the cost of banning guns would be minor? I find it hard to believe that anyone would give it serious thought and conclude it so.

It amuses me that some people here who spend endless amounts of time talking about how useless and futile the War On Drugs is (and I 100% agree with them) thing that Banning Guns would be a perfectly feasible task...........

You know, we didn't use to have shootings like this, before they added "under God" to the pledge of allegiance, and started stamping the dollars with "In God We Trust".

then don't own one.. problem solved! (see how freedom works?)

You are not free to own whatever you want. As someone pointed out earlier, there is a line preventing you from owning a bazooka. The line is drawn at semi-automatic and above in Australia. It's possible to move the line in the US. That's how democracy works.
