I don't see it like this at all. Dying will continue to be a big thing, but our concept of self will change.
Still failing to address the critical issue. Here' it is again: If death has no meaning then life has no meaning. Which begs the question as to why should we bother to care about conciousness at all. What is there to care about if we see it this way? Why do we care about saving lives? Why should we care when someone dies? Why should you care if someone kills you right now?
I'm afraid it is. "You" is just a process.
It is only "me" from the perspective of an observer. If I step into a replicator and a copy walks out and we both stand there looking at each other, from that point we are two distinct entities. He isnt me and I am not him from our points of view, and neither of us want to die just because the other exists. It doesnt matter at all to either of us that if one were to die no one could tell the difference.
This is not accurate. Twins exist at the same time.
It has nothing to do with twins. It's that one body is replaced with an identical body, they do not co-exist.
lol totally irrelevant. Your whole claim is that it doesnt matter because your conciousness is the same. If you could step into a transporter and after you were scanned they shot you in the head and you died, then only 30years later your copy walked out of the machine, does that mean you didnt really die back then and why would it be any different if someone just murdered you right now? From your perspective you're just as dead regardless. Or maybe you step into a replicator and can see your copy before they kill you, you claim thats fine and dandy because there'd still be an arrangement of matter that is just like you in the universe. The only reason the idea of a teleporter has to kill you first is that it has to dismantle your body in order to scan you, but if it didnt have to do that then you could just have a copy of you created without you having to die. Now according to everything you've said so far, killing either of you does not matter because at least one of you is still alive.
Regarding twins we can apply it there and realise that you only value distinct personalities, if they are exactly the same we can get rid of one and it doesnt matter. That is why you dont care about killing the copy or the original in the scenarios above, because they are "the same". But the logical conclusion of this idea is that killing an identical twin isnt as bad as killing someone without a twin for the same reason.
Would be great at this juncture to have an actual transporter to hand. We could grab you and hurl you in (are you a big guy, Ed?), push the button and ask Ed #2 what he feels about it. A few more times and I reckon you'd be cool with it.
Once again you keep ignoring the issue of perspective.
From my perspective you just murdered me, and I think nothing ever again.
Ed2 only feels like he safely stepped out the other side but he never actually experienced any of what he thinks he did, his memories and body are merely copies and he didnt exist before you pressed the "ENERGISE" button. He is like creating an identical twin clone and then you saying well its okay if you klil the other one because one of them is still alive and thats all I care about.
There's nothing like actual experience to change the mind. Otherwise we'll be rattling on all day.
But if that happened you wouldnt be talking to the same entity, you'd be talking to a copy that only feels like it went through it safely because the memories were copied also. Rationally my copy would be just as much against it as I would be because it would realise what it believes is an illusion and you just murdered me, and if you threw my copy into the same machine it would know it would also die.
