2012 Debates

As well as I think Biden did tonight, I don't think it's going to blunt Romney's momentum all that much, if at all. Obama needs to follow this up with a strong performance of his own to turn things around.

I have to agree.

I want to say again, I was very impressed with Ryan's performance. If I didn't know about a number of Ryan's policy specifics I think I would have been swayed by his rhetoric and style. I liked it.

I think I'm partially surprised that he was so much better than Palin. The guy actually knows something.

Wait...

Ryan has policy specifics? Really?

CBS News/GFK flash poll of 500 uncommitted voters:

50% Biden
31% Ryan
19% Tie

My favorite part when when Biden said, "I remember when sarah palin was talking about death panels." after Ryan was done lying about the aca.

Nailed it.

The moderator did an outstanding job. And I agree, I felt that the debate was a real debate, and how refreshing to have actual politicians slug it out. They both so outclassed all the moronic BS we had to endure with ....so many "you know whos".

Watching Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn. Chris Matthews asks her a simple question about her take on Ryan's abortion position, three times now, no answer. What a piece of work. Gives a tirade on unemployment...

Chris has it right, I think. Republicans now have this treasure chest of secrets that they will reveal only upon election. How big is this chest going to get to be?

Biden showed Obama how to fight for his constituents.

I can only hope Obama learned something tonight.

“You know, I heard that death panel argument from Sarah Palin. It seems that every vice presidential debate, I hear this kind of stuff about panels. But let's talk about Medicare,” he said.

Running Commentary on Coverage from B.S. Mountain

I saw Biden's abrasiveness as passion. I thought he kicked Ryan's bootay

I agree. They conservative spin doctors are working it to make it the big issue, but they're clutching at straws.

Tune in to Fox to see the real indication of how bad it went for the red team. Ryan's their fair-haired boy(they'd far prefer that he was the top of the ticket) and their interviewers and interviewees have not mentioned his name. It's all "Biden this" and "Biden that". They have nothing to say about Ryan, whether on content or style. It's like Big Bad Biden was on stage by himself.

Oh, and in the interests of fair play... it's evidently the moderator's fault, just like certain Dem supporters said in the Obama/Romney debate.

Sean Hannity just finally (nearly an hour after the finish) mentioned a Ryan point as a positive - "Good point bringing up the Canadian tax rate being lower..." Poor Sean. He doesn't realize that Canadians don't get all the deductions that the middle class gets in the US, I guess and forgot their favorite talking point about how Canadians (and all people suffering under variations of NHS) are over-taxed to pay for it.

Personally, I see Biden's laughing as a positive. He shut down the b.s. and laughed at it, which is the way it needs to be treated. Fox had one of their town hall symposiums afterwards and by a show of hands, not a single person changed their vote. Admittedly a small sampling, but probably indicative.

Ah, finally.... 9:26 pm EDT... Hannity and Palin are trying to spin some of Ryan's performance. One might ask how you could do that replaying the debate, but they found a way... you just show Ryan's comments/responses so he looks almost competent. And Caribou Barbie just upset Hannity. She has already written off the results. She said that (the ebil) MSM will see this as a Biden win. Sean, though, has seen a secret poll that showed "many thought Ryan won" and he fearlessly predicted that the big story tomorrow will be Biden's condescending smiling and interrupting.

And in irony of ironies, they break from Hannity's show to one of those Fox Extra bits... On the health and psychological benefits of..... SMILING!! :D

I didn't watch the VP debate, but based upon the reaction I'm seeing here and elsewhere online, it seems to me the Democrats are getting their mojo back :D

Yup, the Dems definitely have their mojo back :D

ETA: Seems like the prediction markets might agree, because President Obama is up and Romney's down at Intrade. We'll see how the numbers look tomorrow.

Good post. Isn't the fact that Palin has a job judging something that she is woefully incompetent in truly comical?

BTW: If you want to see something funny search for my posts on Palin in 2008. I was supporting Obama but defended Palin. It's hard to escape from past indiscretions. :)

I watch a couple of clips (there's no way I'd watch the whole thing) and what struck me most was how Ryan was able to maintain his composure when Biden repeatedly interrupted him during his turn to speak. I was impressed that he didn't once raise his voice or lose his train of thought. Just on style points I think he did better as far as that goes because that's a much harder performance than constant smirking and interruptions.

Best moment for Democrats: Forcing Ryan to sputter and stammer and all but admit that their talk of closing loopholes was BS.

Best moment for Republicans: I suppose the summation. Pointing out that Democrats were in charge and things didn't go well. I thought the point about the administration's predictions on unemployment being totally wrong was a solid point, but statistics and numbers don't always play well.

In the post debate analysis, check style and substance. Ryan was pinned to the wall and forced to evade and note that he didn't have specifics. Biden......was aggressive and mean and disrespectful and whatever. Maybe it will work for Republicans.

How can you honestly make a post like this if you admit to only watching "a couple of clips"?

I will gladly acknowledge my impression was mistaken if you can produce a clip that shows otherwise.

Very Quick Thoughts

The most difficult moment for Ryan was when Raddatz and Biden both pressed him for any specifics on how they can pay for their tax plan. He simply refused. That’s all he could do because they have no way to pay for it. That’ll leave a bruise and cue up questions for next week.

After the debate ended, Republicans were calling it a draw and Democrats were calling it a strong win for Biden. That tells you all you need to know.

Predicted above...

The assessment of this debate should be an interesting litmus on honesty and self-delusion. I don't recall many liberals claiming Obama won the last debate. Let's see how many conservatives will claim Ryan won this one.
