2012 Debates

I'm hoping the same thing. I thought Obama looked bad, but when it comes right down to it, all Romney could do was dodge.

I would love to see an ad that has Romney saying he doesn't want a 5 trillion dollar tax cut, alongside an explanation of his proposed 5 trillion dollar tax cut. I think there were several places where Obama wasn't thinking quickly on his feet, but where Romney just said things that are easily shown to be either flip-flops from previous positions or, in some cases, just plain wrong.

Not thinking quickly on his feet? More like not thinking at all.

That performance was so bad it shocked me -- I thought everyone kept saying how good at debates Obama was?

How hard is it to just quickly address the opponents lies and let the world see them for what they are?

Would it have been hard for Obama to just say things like

"Even in the best of times U.S. unemployment hovers around X. And when I took office it was Y. So 23 million is an incredibly misleading number. Are you purposefully trying to mislead the public, or had you just not thought of what should be obvious to anyone with a gradeschool education?"

"We didn't turn the economy around as fast as we wanted, that's a shame. But what would you have done differently, Mr. Romney? What decisions have I made that you fault, in the last 4 years? What decisions would you have made differently, and how? Oh I remember -- you would have let these companies fail, and hoped for some kind of phoenix to come out of the ashes of the ruined economy. That may work in business, Mr. Romney, but not with a country full of living, breathing humans."

"Why do you keep claiming I have taken 716 billion from medicare? I explained it before, it was money saved by increasing the efficiency of the programs and refusing to let the medical industry drive their costs out of control. You should be familiar with this kind of thing, since its pretty much exactly what you have made a career out of doing with companies, so again I can only assume you are trying to mislead the public."

"You cite numbers for how many hospitals and doctors said they would stop taking new medicare patients. Are you aware of all the other more credible studies that have completely debunked those numbers ? Are you purposefully choosing the most extreme studies, in order to mislead the public?"

???????

Sometimes I think Obama isn't just an oreo, he is like one of those mushy oreos that fall into the glass of milk and you don't get at them until the very end and they just fall apart under any pressure at all.

Joe you might think it isn't worth his time to unpack and refute all these things, but I feel the opposite. I'm tired of hearing the same old "we did this, we did that" bullet points that the president regurgitates every time he speaks. He certainly could have called Romney out more on the basic arithmetic thing.

The most significant to me (which I posted as the debate was taking place) was when Obama nailed Romney on his lack of specifics, and Romney pretty much copped to it, saying it was more about "principles" with him.

Here it is:
Obama said:
But when Governor Romney says that he’ll replace it with something but can’t detail how it will be in fact replaced, and the reason he set up the system he did in Massachusetts is because there isn’t a better way of dealing with the pre-existing conditions problem, it -- it just reminds me of -- you know, he says that he’s going to close deductions and loopholes for his tax plan.

That’s how it’s going to be paid for. But we don’t know the details. He says that he’s going to replace Dodd-Frank, Wall Street reform. But we don’t know exactly which ones. He won’t tell us. He now says hes going to replace “Obamacare” and assure that all the good things that are in it are going to be in there and you don’t have to worry.

And at some point, I think the American people have to ask themselves, is the reason that Governor Romney is keeping all these plans to replace secret because they’re too good?

Romney said:
-- which is -- which is my experience as a governor is if I come in and -- and lay down a piece of legislation and say it’s my way or the highway, I don’t get a lot done. What I do is the same way that Tip O’Neill and Ronald Reagan worked together some years ago. When Ronald Reagan ran for office, he laid out the principles that he was going to foster. He said he was going to lower tax rates. He said he was going to broaden the base. You’ve said the same thing: You’re going to simplify the tax code, broaden the base. Those are my principles.

It was a disappointing performance by Obama, but like Unabogie, I'm thinking this is not the last we'll hear of what was said here. When the Obama ads start coming out showing how Mitt flip-flopped, it may turn out to be to the advantage of the Democrats.

Yes thats it, Obama is going to win this on Mitts flip flops

Obama has nothing, its the economy stupid

Obama finally doesn't have the press kissing his ass, no teleprompter, just him :)

It will be a sad day when you libs wake up and see what you have in this light weight.

Yep. Good point. We've got Mr. Etch-a-Sketch making claims that contradict his platform in a debate just a month before the election. (Yeah--his defense of government regulation of Wall Street was a surreal moment.)

Give him enough rope. . .

What you don't get is their has to be a balance of regulation. you stupid libs ALWAYS go to far.

I'm loving this, keep you head in the sand.

You liberals are so screwed:D

Wouldn't that actually be a happy day? Because then the libs well have finally seen the light and come around to the conservative way of thinking, which of course is always vindicated and never on the wrong side of history.

If you're going to call people stupid, it helps not to make grade-school grammatical errors and spelling mistakes in your post.

Exactly. The American people don't care about integrity or principle. Since when were either important for being president?

It will be a sad day when you libs wake up and see what you have in this light weight.
Stupid libs. Can't figure out just how strong of a candidate Romney is. I think those libs have some apologizing to do to Dan Quayle.

What the hell has Obama done to get this economy going.

Yes its such a damn SHAME this economy hasn't taken off by itself.

Come on libs, what has this fool done to get this economy going. How is Obama going to defend his record. You libs are so easy to beat, you don't have a chance.

Stupid libs, just because the stock market soared after the stimulus and just because the job market turned around and just because businesses are making record profits doesn't mean that Obama has done anything to get the economy going. Passing a stimulus and seeing the economy change direction doesn't mean anything.

RandFan sighs heavily and rolls his eyes at the stupid libs.

Ahh I see, priciple huh, fast and furious. Gitmo, Benghazi. you libs wouldn't know principle if it bit you in the ass.

Isn't something to celebrate with you GIRLY men when a man evolves and changes his mind.

First off I'm not a lib. Second I didn't claim Obama was perfectly principled. I only claim Obama has principles. Tell me of any major policy Romney hasn't been on both sides of.

Isn't something to celebrate with you GIRLY men when a man evolves and changes his mind.
Romney has been caught changing his mind daily.

It's hilarious when Romney's cheerleaders come out of the woodwork after one perceived victory, while being notably absent during his fustercluck of repeated failures.

It's easy to root for a team right after a win. Not so much during the string of losses that preceded it.

Wow, CNN get's my vote of being the most dishonest when talking about their own poll that said 67% of people thought Romney won.

Seems okay, right? Look at the sample group. All white, all over fifty, all from the south, and all suburban. Now this is a key albeit narrow demographic, for sure, but hardly representative of all those that watched the debate.

The title of their story representing this superb sample?

"CNN Poll: Most watchers say Romney debate winner."

C'mon CNN, take some time and get a better sample instead of trying to be the first people with poll results.

I noticed that also.

The stock market is soaring? So is unemployment, fuel prices, food.

You really deserve this guy Rand. In 4 years you still havn't figured out that liberalism has never worked anywhere. I'm glad your stuck with it though.
