2012 Debates

You're listening? I thought we were just supposed to pay attention to the important stuff, like Mitt's facial expressions.

The facial expressions will sway voters, and will likely turn of some.

Doesn't that make them important to the debate result, then?

The most important part of Nate Silver's analysis of presidential debates...

Bottom Line: Unless President Obama eats a live baby on stage during the debate(s), they will have little impact on the outcome of the race.

Yep, I was going to point that out but I was responding to other posts.

It is a really interesting read (everything that Silver posts is interesting) but the part about how much ground Romney needs to make up coupled with the fact that no candidate has ever made up that much ground in a debate was pretty fascinating.

Regardless of which candidate I am voting for, I am a stats geek and seeing the numbers to back this up is pretty cool..

Did Romney just say he brings no specific plans, but rather he brings principles?

Exactly.

Like it or not, no matter what the policy positions of a candidate, if they come across with bad body language in a debate, it will hurt them. Such is the landscape of politics in the TV/Internet age.

And Romney cannot afford to be displaying this kind of body language right now.

He's screwed.

Interesting to hear Romney finally address the question of his lack of details as to how he intends to do the things he wants to do.

Namely that he has no details. His plan is to go to congress and repeat his general principles and then figure out how to get it done.

I can't imagine how that should appeal to anyone. I would equate it him with him saying that he has no idea how to get it done, and that he in fact does not know if it's even possible.

*edit to add:

his body language isn't as obvious on PBS, where they don't split screen the candidates.

He should go all or nothing with the body language in that case. Roll his eyes. Stick out his tongue. Pick his nose. Tweak his nipples. I'm all for more entertaining debates anyway.
