I met Watson at least once at TAM 5.5. I should write about what I thought at the time, but a lot of time has passed and my memory now isn't all that good seeing that I didn't take notes to keep everything straight. All I can say is that she wanted a big party and didn't care about the noise.

I would not even thought at that time, that if someone had asked her to had coffee with him that it would have become such a big woah that it has become today.

:) :) :)

At that party she invited everyone to jump in the pool with her with their clothes on. That was an interesting party and as one of the few who were completely sober at it, I do remember what went on ;)

I was at that party, too. Left before the noise got them in trouble. Rebecca did not seem to be the type of person who'd be spooked by a coffee invitation.

She also had been quite crude a few times on SGU just for the shock value as it did not necessarily relate to the stories being discussed. I am not quite sure of what she was trying to do.

I didn't get the impression that she was spooked...more like shocked and/or disgusted.

I get the impression that this started as something like "Hey, guys, you wouldn't believe what some **** said to me in the elevator" and escalated from there, to the point where having a view on the subject became a kind of loyalty oath. She may have been as ill-served by her supporters as the ones sending the hate mail. Sometimes things assume a symbolic value they are ill-equipped to bear.

Just to make it clear - I only read Atheism+ for amusement. I've made two posts there and likely will make no more.

I only post here for amusement, too. Amusement (and an utter lack of free will) are the only reasons I do anything, actually.

"Likely?"

I assume that two of your posts there would be enough to get you banned...

And now, there is the battle of the t-shirts. Watson is selling t-shirts with her outline and some wording, while Jim Jesus is now selling similar t-shirts with contrarian wording. And we though that TAM 2012 was edgy with harriet Hall's t-shirt.

The funds for the most recent Watson's t-shirt offering are earmarked (according to her) "for liquor." She seems to be quite the party animal. ;)

There should be no problem with people changing, hopefully it is for the better, whatever that may be.

But not everone will know you've changed when you do, and there is no sign in the sky telling everyone in the world about your change.

Technically, wasn't that after the party was broken up by the cops?

Is there any evidence that there are large chunks of non-white/European atheists and skeptics who would like to be active in the community but feel excluded due to all the white males?

I'd guess the reason so many atheists are white is due to simple demographics. Atheism correlates with educational level and affluence, and in the US whites are the most educated and affluent demographics, or at least the most affluent and educated tend to be of European descent. Hence a lot of atheists will be of a that demographics. The solution is not to bash them for being so, it is to spread education and argument to as many as possible. This is what the Internet is doing. I think the Internet could well be the bane of religion. On many, many forums that are not related to atheism and skepticism (or to religion and woo), atheists tend to dominate. Internet forum visitors, in my experience, tend to be much less religious than the population as a whole.

Though I do wonder about Asian Americans. They are an affluent, well-educated demographic. What does religiousity looks like among them?

Even if that were true, what's the solution? Get rid of all the white males?

A+ has no solution for this, either. It has been shown again and again that building up a community of European-Americans spouting far leftist jargon does not attract minorities...it attracts more European-Americans spouting far leftist jargon.

Interestingly, A+ is trying to create a community of left leaning white female. How original.

As far as Asian, I know a bit about them. For the Japanese, and to some extend the Chinese, they have a different relationship with religion. For the Japanese, religion comes only during rituals, such as marriage, funeral, etc. During their normal daily life, it does not really have an impact. Even during rituals, it is more cultural than religious. For weddings, the traditional ceremony is shinto but I've seen Catholic. Funerals are buddhist. At New Year and other special occasions, a lot of people goes to the temples, but not on a regular basis.

For many, atheism does not make a lot of sense, secularism more so.

Bingo.:)

Over on the lefty forum I've been reading for the past four years ( I don't post there, save 9/11 debunking, it's a totalitarian state ) they're constantly lamenting the overabundance of white males. In their feminism forum, there's constant reminders that the thread is In The Feminism Forum and all the males currently discussing whatever the topic is, should shut up lest one of the few female feminists should want to post.

Funny thing is, the do attract the odd minority poster, the odd POC and they very rarely behave as the left expects them to and usually end up under the ban hammer.
