It's fair enough to point out that certain groups are under-represented, but its seems unfair to assume that this is necessarily the fault of the group itself. It's also not necessarily the case that adding number of young white women with degrees in women's studies equates to full diversity.

Hhmmm, that raises an interesting question. I have my doubts that there are mobs of African-American, Latino, etc. atheists that are turned off of humanist and atheist organizations because they are full of white people. It seems more likely that there are just a much greater percentage of atheists among European-Americans. Are there statistics to back this up? And if this is true...why?

And it is to be hoped we never agree on all issues. It is unlikely that skeptics and/or atheists have all the right answers, to be of one mind would preclude discussion and debate.

And all progress requires initial disagreement.

oopsie!! It was in this JREF thread!!

I could have sworn it was in there too but with the way they're editing those threads it could very well have been removed so the person making the original comment didn't appear quite so...well, you know.;)

Just another far left freakshow.

It would if you wanted a movement that was looking to resolve issues and be active, but if you read their "rule of admission", it is clear that it is more of a club than a movement.

The comments are actually interesting. From their definitions, this place is for marginalized voices, I guess like PZ.

there really are people out there who know things better than you do. What works for you does not work equally well for everyone else. Do not condesplain here.

...which may just be a way of saying that different groups of people have different experiences. However, it comes over as establishing a hierarchy.

Ageist, racist, sexist, stereotyping, name-calling, troll-style remark. She must think turnabout is fair play. I call hypocrisy. Why are images of Ann Coulter flashing in my brain right now?

Is she implying that our "groups" are exclusionist?

Perhaps she would like to consider that due to the privilege A+ers seem to hold so dear, secularists/atheists/humanists do indeed conform to certain stereotypes simply because those groups have better access to education etc?

Personally Id *love* minorities to be better represented, but unfortunately the minorities are the poor, downtrodden ones that seem to somehow lack access to education, and therefore cling to theism like a security blanket. So instead of perhaps working to improve that situation, Jen would prefer to accuse "atheist groups" as being exclusionist?

Would she prefer that people with access to education avoided utilising it, so that they may stay as ignorant as everyone else?

Jen, please, stop being a douche. Just stop. Stop framing "atheist groups" as being exclusionist. Theyre not, and you're more than welcome to join in, as is everyone else.

Which is again the thing I still can not fathom. Opposes exclusionist by excluding them, take the asserted marginalized voices to a further marginalized place?! As a so called privileged white (though entirely freckled) heterosexual male, I've been spat upon by said minorities, had rocks thrown at me (due to my nonconformist tendencies) and been treated (inspected and occasionally accepted) like a piece of meat by some women. These I've considered to be privileges (can't be because I'm a white heterosexual male, we're blind to our privileges) I've had that have enabled me to grow as a human. Spit won't burn you like acid (unless you insist it must), you can just wipe it off. People throwing rocks tire easily when they just can't hit you and you don't always have to be just a piece of meat if you don't want to.

Because you don't understand that the solution to all discrimination is to have groups run by young college educated white women. That will end all discrimination.

seriously though. the rhetoric of watson, mcreight and some others a+ people is very similar to ms Coulters style of argument. it seems a rather good comparison to me.

It's about always winning and never backing down, even after they realize they're mistaken.

When an A+ young white woman writes a book or starts an organization as successful as those from old white men (e.g. The God Delusion, God is not Great, JREF) I will be thrilled.

At least they are keeping out the rabble. Good for them to make no apparent effort to include the non college educated!

If you moved into a neighborhood that was say 50% gay many would class it as a gay neighborhood. So clearly you do not need absoluteness for a group to be classed as such.

That would be the difference between a neighbourhood and a community. Mr and Mrs Jones might live in a gay neighbourhood (or a Jewish neighbourhood, or an Upper-middle-class neighbourhood), but would not necessarily be part of that community.

Of course, it's not impossible that they might effectively be part of a gay community without being actually gay, but the tendency would be to assume they weren't.

I think the difference is between community which can be described in multiple ways and say an organization which can collectively have a view. For example the catholic church is against many things many catholics are not.

The catholic community is certainly a different thing to the catholic church.

I just read on Facebook that Atheism Plus is no more.

I just made two posts which were perfectly serious debating issues. I wasn't trying to break anything.

I've been trying to destroy JREF from within for years and I've gotten nowhere.

The Atheism+ FB page has been a hoax:

The reason I ask why people are here is because there were never meant to be people here.
This was a joke.
See everything about Atheism + gives me the *****. I was lurking on a FfTB thread when the whole idea of A+ came up. I thought it was ludicrous. As I watched, the FfTBers came up with the name Atheism +, and the horrid Jadehawk went to her graphics programs and came up with the logos which are the cover photo here. They plagerised the A+ logo from Richard Dawkins. I copied all the logos that day and posted them here.

Not very diligent skepticism, from the group, really.
