Romney Becoming A Pariah Over Libya Attack Screw-Up

There are conflicting accounts of his death. This report, for example, attributes his death to asphyxiation from smoke inhalation. But there are indeed ways to defend against RPG attacks, and nothing indicates that the "rockets" involved were anything heavier than RPG's.

How is any of this relevant to the fact that Romney tried to make political hay before the bodies were cold, got it wrong on multiple counts, and is now being rightly mocked for it?

I swear, if you spun any faster you'd be a top.

Try a little reading next time.

the topic of the thread is Romney Becoming A Pariah Over Libya Attack Screw-Up.
How, with your superior reading skills, did you interpret that as, "The US should have done better at protecting the Libyan embassy"?

Yeah, this isn't "Six Degrees of Romney", sorry.

The question was, of course, rhetorical -- the point is that what you're talking about is _not_ in fact relevant to the topic, and your obvious efforts to distract from Mr. Romney's complete failure to be a statesman are exactly that: obvious.

Mr. Romney's actions are deplorable, his response extremely inappropriate for someone who wants to be the head of state, and his desperation to find something, anything to attack Obama about -- regardless of whose bodies he has to jump off to do so -- is blatant. Whether or not there was adequate security at the embassy in the first place is a matter for an entirely different discussion.

I didn't.

If you want to say that you think my post is off topic, go ahead. But if you want to know what that specific post was addressing, all you need to do is read the posts it responded to. remirol apparently didn't do that.

The difference is that McCain's move was criticized as being politically naive, in that he claimed that he had to focus on the TARP bailout as a matter of public interest instead of his campaign. Romney's was the opposite - politically overzealous without the slightest hint of public interest that he can wrap around this slimy incident.

I actually approved of McCain doing that back then. The TARP bailout was important.

And now that I think about it I just can't imagine McCain undermining a sitting president while our embassies are still under siege.

Upon reflection, one of the most disturbing elements of this whole incident (apart, of course, from the fact that public servants and innocent people have been killed and injured, and the entire Libya policy of the US is now in disarray) is what it seems Romney's intent actually was. The head of the RNC, Reince Priebus, saw the potential to exploit a statement urging restraint by an Egypt embassy official, and tweeted the original "Obama apologizes" meme. Romney staffers pick it up as the Party Line and run with it. Now lets assume for a minute that it was true - that Obama approved the Egyptian embassy's denunciation of the incendiary film. Or at least accept Romney's principle that "the embassy is the administration." What do they mean by exploiting this? That Romney agrees with Terry Jones? That we should go on making these films, and be proud of them? I think the Embassy statement was clear to support the "universal right of free speech" but asked for a little humility and tolerance by those who wish to use it. Does Romney disagree?

ETA: It begs the religion question I've asked elsewhere - Romney is relying on the religious tolerance of Americans in asking them to vote for a member of the LDS cult but here is conflating tolerance as an anti-American value.

You haven't had an on-topic post this thread. Your very first post was a very obvious attempt to deflect the conversation to something else. So don't throw out smarmy comments about how it is somebody else who can't read.

Mitt just teed it up for the President.

"There's a broader lesson to be learned here: Governor Romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later and as president one of the things I've learned is you can't do that," Obama told CBS News on Wednesday."It's important for you to make sure that the statements that you make are backed up by the facts and that you've thought through the ramifications before you make them."

True, but Obama had a learning curve too. That Crowley/Gates thing at the beginning of his administration was an embarrassment, and a rookie mistake, but at least he admitted his error and tried to make amends. Mitt Romney's gaffe was not an emotional response to a misunderstood situation. It was a cold and (poorly) calculated attempt to make political hay off of a terrible tragedy.

But the quote you gave is still a good point. Job experience is a big plus for Obama, and a big negative for Romney.

Plus, the Crowley/Gates thing wasn't based on a lie, as Mitt's attack was. Crowley really did arrest Gates in his own home. It really was a boneheaded move (I forger what word Obama used, exactly). But I'll take your point. Still, that was four years ago, and Obama certainly didn't double down once things got heated. Mitt just can't admit when he's wrong. Not a good trait for someone who wants to be President.
