Julian Assange: rapist or not?

This is so precious. You just can't make this stuff up.

The U.S. hasn't even indicted Assange. Sweden is after him. But to hear him and his supporters tell it, the evil Yanks are hot on his tail, leaving behind them a trail of coerced countries and compromised legal systems...

...except for the stalwart Equador, standing alone in the breach.

It is to laugh. And yet, it is to be sad.

If there wasn't a case I doubt his lawyers would have went with the "what he did wasn't rape in the UK" defence during the extradition hearings.

The case was dismissed in September 2010 by chief prosecutor Eva Finne and Assange was told he was free to leave Sweden. "I don't think there is reason to suspect that he has committed rape".

The second prosecutor, Marianne Ny, who re-opened the case, declined to interview Assange while he was still in Sweden.

How much you got.

What is your excuse for the US not seeking to have Assange extradited from the UK - a nation with much closer ties to the US than Sweden?

The victims lawyers appealed the decision and was granted a re-opening. I fail to see how this is a bad thing. That's kinda what appeals are for.

Assanges swedish lawyer knew the prosecutor wanted to interview him for almost two weeks before he left the country.

Don't make me post the monkey dance again.

Is it because you have nothing substantive to say that you resort to schoolyard smear and fantasy?

You don't realize Assange is the immature fantasist? With his delusions and distortions over the collateral damage video, self-aggrandizing, conspiracy theories, calling his rape accuser a CIA plant, etc etc? Yeah right, he thinks the cops almost stormed the building but only didn't because there were his supporters outside! The man is a non-stop joke.

You don't realize he is a dangerous idiot that deserves to be mocked?

Julian was very reluctant to delete those names, to redact them." David Leigh of the Guardian newspaper tells FRONTLINE of meetings he attended with Assange in the run-up to publication of the war logs. "And we said: 'Julian, we've got to do something about these redactions. We really have got to.' And he said: 'These people were collaborators, informants. They deserve to die.' And a silence fell around the table."

So this is an actual question for you. Do you agree with Assange that they deserved to die? Or do you believe him that he didn't say that and all of the others who were there are lying that he said that in order to discredit him?

non-stop jokes! Get real

Let's fill in some more detail here:

Sep 1st: the case was reopened.
Sep 8th: JA get Hurtig as Counsel
Sep 8-14th: JA available for questions, prosecution declines
Sep 14th, JAs counsel asked if JA was free to leave sweden
Sep 15th: Prosecutor confirms that he may leave Sweden, but that investigation was ongoing
Sep 21th: Prosecution contacts Hurtig and asks for an interview, provisionally the 28th is agreed
Sep 27th: JA leaves Sweden for the UK
Sep 27th: Hurtig tells prosecution that he haven't been able to reach JA.
Sep 27th: The prosecutor orders JA to be arrested.

All the dates and actions before and after this can be read in the agreed facts document from the Supreme Court. Above information is on page 4 and 5.

Stockholm District Court approves a request to detain Mr Assange for questioning on suspicion of rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion. Sweden's Director of Prosecution Marianne Ny says he has not been available for questioning.
Mr Assange's British lawyer Mark Stephens says his client offered to be interviewed at the Swedish embassy in London or Scotland Yard or via video link. He accuses Ms Ny of "abusing her powers" in insisting that Mr Assange return to Sweden.

You want to bet that guy? On the internet?

How much do you want to bet that you won't get welched if you win the bet?

His supporters see a bit of themselves in him.

David Allen Green (Jack of Kent here) blogs about "Legal Myths about the Assange extradition" in New Statesman:

David Allen Green said:
Whenever the Julian Assange extradition comes up in the news, many of his supporters make various confident assertions about legal aspects of the case.

Some Assange supporters will maintain these contentions regardless of the law and the evidence – they are like “zombie facts” which stagger on even when shot down; but for anyone genuinely interested in getting at the truth, this quick post sets out five common misconceptions and some links to the relevant commentary and material. It complements a similar post on the leading Blog That Peter Wrote.

Neither of the women has accused Assange of raping them. The Swedish state is his accuser.

How is it possible for either of us to know one way or the other, particularly as you haven't even bothered to reference your smear?

The women have made accusations that fall under the definition of rape in Swedish (and UK) law.

How is it possible for either of us to know one way or the other, particularly as you haven't even bothered to reference your smear?

What kind of reference would you like? Would you settle for anything less than Assange's say-so?

They described what had happened, and the prosecutor is doing the prosecution. It's quite a good system actually - the prosecution and the courts know the laws. We don't require that a person need to be able to state exactly what law a person has broken, that is for the police and prosecution to handle.

You can read about it on the Swedish Prosecution Authorities home page.

IANAL, and even if I were, with the information available we can only guess at what kind of horse trading goes on behind the scenes. Maybe the US had to take some time to figure out how to prosecute him.

I don't think Assange is crazy to be worried:

Neither do Australia's foreign service:
