And the boats keep coming

You don't seem to understand the function of the High Court of Australia very well.

Do not parliament make the laws?

Yes it do.

Once the Malaysian solution was rejected by the High court.

<childish insults snipped>

The comment above is strangely at odds with this one:

And why would it have a chance when parliament make the laws?

On the one hand you clearly acknowledge that the High Court has the power to block or overturn legislation and on the other you appear to be questioning that power.

You need to pick one or the other.

I am no lawyer but why is my comment regarding parliament and the laws lacking understanding?

I don't know. Perhaps the separation of powers is something you need to read up on a bit in order to correct this lack.

... supposed childish insult amended to allow obvious dodge to be answered ...
Once the Malaysian solution was rejected by the High court, did not the PM seek support from the opposition to then create new laws to allow Malaysia? Why would she do this?

Answer this and we might be able to put it to bed.

The legislation has passed the Senate, with a few more failed amendments (I'm quoting from the ABC article since I wasn't really paying attention):
The Greens put up several amendments to build in extra human rights protections and to stop asylum seekers from being held offshore for more than 12 months.

They also put up amendments to review the bill and to give it a so-called sunset clause so it would only last for two years.

But they were voted down by the Coalition and the Government, who also joined together to pass the bill.
Those wacky Greens with their unshakeable respect for other human beings!

Also nice that some Labor members are openly admitting they don't really like the legislation. Well, not that "nice" considering they still voted for it immediately, but points for honesty. (ETA: Wait, that's rather hypocritical considering I wanted this legislation passed but also dislike it. Good job, brain.)

My prediction: Progress ends within a week (from vagueness, partisanship, factions, whatever). And the powerball number will be 26.

Tensions are heightening over the asylum seeker debate, with Immigration Minister Chris Bowen fronting a press conference in Sydney this afternoon under police guard.

Fearing a backlash from refugee advocates, Mr Bowen was protected by three police officers as he gave an update on the reconnaissance teams sent to Manus Island and Nauru.

Which refugee advocates? Can anyone shed any light on this?

Without looking it up further, I would assume groups like Amnesty International. Like the Greens, they're incredibly unhappy about the expansion of offshore processing (I linked to one of their articles earlier IIRC).

Having police protection sounds a bit heavyhanded to me; if I was one of the refugee advocates I'd probably be outright offended.

I am incredulous!
A Labor federal government needs police protection from Amnesty International and their political allies in The Greens?
Really?
Really!?!?

He's been heckled and "chased to his car" before (by the Refugee Action Coalition), and while they're, uh, not as professional as Amnesty and the kind of groups I was imagining it still sounds like overkill.

I couldn't find who it was this time, but it was probably them again. Maybe police were easier to organise than whatever local or parliamentary security was available, which is the only reason I could see that's not entirely ridiculous.

So we now have the situation where those on the left of politics are a physical threat against those on the left of politics. :jaw-dropp

Will the yabbie be safe in public with these violent lefties abroad?

Unless it's a matter of the budget or confidence I don't think you could say that the Greens are the political allies of Labor.

I had a look but came up empty. Does anyone know how long the average refugee boat trip from Indonesia is? Presumably all the boats arriving now set off before the legislation existed/passed.

It would depend on the boat, but I'd have thought three or four days as a maximum under power.

It strikes me that the boats that are arriving now are the people smugglers rushing through their closing down sale strategy.

I see stupid shoot yourself in the long term foot stupiidty, if current trends continue populations will get more elederly inthe developed countries and birth rates will continue to fall, in other words the population issue will become one of not enough people in the work force to maintian the economies and you will seee the developed countries vying with each other to encourage people to come.

But that reality does not paly well to baying crowds wanting things easy.

So are you supporting increased immigration levels in Australia? It's a bit hard to tell.

Oh, and get a spellchecker. They're free.
