And the boats keep coming

Because that's so much more important than finding a solution as quickly as possible.

Ohh, so it's a quick solution she is after? Like 18 months ago when a boat smashed on Christmas Island and she sat on her hands? Like the twelve months that followed and she lied about East Timor?. Or when she desperately suggested Malaysia?
How about the quick solution put up last October, when her minister Bowen recommended a return to Nauru but she rejected it? Or when recently the coalition put up similar proposals as this committee but was rejected by the yabbie?

Like those quick solutions you mean?

They have all day and night to make the Yabbie squirm. She should be held to account and if the shoe was on the other foot.....

But let's see what the outcome is tomorrow; if a week is a long time in politics a day or two's grilling is of value politically and only a fool would not exploit it.

I'm pretty certain this will occur. The Opposition will move amendments aimed to "strengthen" the legislation, which will include TPVs. They will be rejected, and the Scum will then blame Labor, while revelling in more deaths at sea.

Worst Opposition Leader Ever.

They'll be kind enough to agree on the short term parts first while the rest is sorted out - in other words, get Nauru going, claim it as evidence they were right all along, and fuss about all the long term changes.

That's some crystal ball you have there LK. :)

In fact that is what the committee proposed, in terms of timing as you have outlined, it seems t me they are following the instructions to the letter.

Recommendation 7
The panel recommends that legislation to support the transfer of people to regional processing arrangements be introduced into the australian parliament as a matter of urgency (paragraphs 3.54 and 3.57). This legislation should require that any future designation of a country as an appropriate place for processing be achieved through a
further legislative instrument that would provide the opportunity for the australian parliament to allow or disallow the instrument (paragraph 3.43). Report of the Expert Panel on Asylum Seekers, August 2012

Recommendation 8
The panel recommends that a capacity be established in nauru as soon as practical to process the claims of Imas transferred from australia in ways consistent with australian and nauruan responsibilities under international law (paragraphs 3.44-3.55).

Recommendation 9
The panel recommends that a capacity be established in png as soon as possible to process the claims of Imas transferred from australia in ways consistent with the responsibilities of australia and png under international law (paragraphs 3.56-3.57).

Yes, but I'm concerned that the implementation of all the other items won't go nearly as smoothly as reopening Nauru seems to be, and the same report makes it clear that simply moving them offshore isn't a long-term solution - in much the same way that the "Pacific Solution" stopped the boats (ignoring push factors) but had pretty terrible side effects for the people who encountered it.

I'm concerned that instead of agreeing to put everything through, half of it will get stuck in the "too-hard basket" or thrown out entirely, the half-done system will eventually fail and we'll be right back at square one.

My 'prediction' that the opposition will only do enough so that they can claim credit was perhaps unnecessarily snide - after all, if I think that poorly of them I shouldn't have to wait long for factual proof.

I doubt you are right and sincerely hope you are wrong. Time will tell.

In the meantime the Yabbie is getting her pants pulled down in parliament. She has been publicly humiliated (Age poll below helps confirm same), we can only hope her days are numbered:

Poll: Which side of politics has come out looking best in the asylum seeker stand-off?
http://www.theage.com.au/polls/opinion/political-news/asylum-seeker-result-20120814-245je.html#poll

Labor, for a necessary compromise ...............19%
The Coalition, for sticking to their policies ....56%
The Greens, for sticking to their principles ....4%
No side ......................................................17%
Not sure ......................................................4%

Total votes: 6591.

Worst PM ever.

I'm loathe to wade through this again, so can someone confirm or deny the following:

Are people still couching their revulsion of for'ners and immigration by saying that children are dying because the Australian gubbermint (aka The Gillard) isn't locking them up in tin shacks on Pacific islands?

You're a pom though, so you should probably be ok. You could even overstay any visa you happen to get and nobody would bat an eyelid.

Nothing like a bit of Joie de vivre to bring out the sexist in you.

They had their own proposal, which has never been tested, because they couldn't pass it.

Correct. And guess what? It is/was both illegal (High Court) and unworkable in its current form (The Committee).

If the Yabbie really wanted a quick solution she would have obtained one. Instead she let hundreds died purely for her own political reasons.

An utter disgrace, unfit for office on so many levels.

So is Nauru. That is why they need legislation.
