Google's Nexus 7

So I ordered two of the 16gb versions on June 28th, and just got an email last night telling me it'd be another 1-2 weeks to get mine shipped here in Canada.. I've got friends who just drove over to Staples or Future Shop and walked out with one.

Not the best way to treat your most loyal customers. I'm hoping to at least get a refund on the "2-Day Shipping". Getting it late is one thing, paying extra to get it late just isn't cool.

I can assure you all that the fact that some people may find they can't log on until my Nexus arrives is purely coincidental! :D

So first time users - comments - worth the money?

Not only that I have now sent three requests for information and not had one reply - the CS is appalling.

Mrs Worm is very much enjoying hers. She was slightly freaked out that it pulled the WiFi details off her phone so that she didn't have to log in, but I guess it worked so we can't complain.

The fact that a lot of apps don't work in landscape mode is a bit odd, but there are probably valid design reasons for it.

Yup. First, it has replaced my Kindle as my reading device. Really good resolution so the screen is very clear. I can read books that are in pdf format now that were just too indistinct on the Kindle and of course pdf is high fidelity and don't need to convert them to Kindle format so they look right. I use the Kindle app for reading pdf files. The genuine Adobe app doesn't work well and I have a lot of 8 1/2 x 11 pdf documents I use at work that I could never read on the Kindle but look really good on this size screen. Google also has books and their own reading app.

It probably won't replace my netbook like I'd hoped. Lacking a keyboard makes it painful to post this much text so I'm using my netbook right now. Maybe if I were to buy a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, that might do it. The Nexus 7 screen is also too small to comfortably see most web sites without enlarging them and then having to scroll around to see the whole screen.

Games, especially the ones made for the Tegra 3, are incredible. Dark Meadow, Shadowgun THD, Dead Trigger, Zen Pinball are a few.

Youtube looks very good. In portrait mode, the video takes up the top half of the screen and in landscape it takes up the whole screen. The one movie that comes free with it, Transformers - Dark of the Moon, shows that movies are very nice. I'm going to have to convert all my WMV movies to MP4 format. A pity about the lack of storage space. I think my 16 gig was down to about 12 1/2 or 13 when I got it and it's below 10 now that I've downloded some apps.

You can upload up to 20,000 songs to Google Play with Music Manager and you also have an additional 5 gig in their cloud storage and the 20k songs don't take any of it. A couple hundred gig would be a lot more useful.

Magazines are just a bit too small to read comfortably without zooming in. One issue of each of a variety of mags come free with the device so you can see for yourself.

Google Now has those cards that appear when you first turn on the unit. I was out of town and didn't get mine until last night. This morning the card that came up told me how long it would take me to drive into work and then it told me later in the morning how long my commute home would be.

There's certainly more but I've only had it for 24 hours.

A few screenshots.
They turned out a little bigger than I expected so I've put them in spoiler boxes.

I'm keeping the home screen fairly plain for now:

The box that's opened up is sort of a quick start for yer favourite apps.
You can choose which ones to put into it:

You can pull up a page of all apps on the device, much like on any Android phone.
The next pages are accessed by swiping sideways:

Chrome looks alright:

Google+ looks very neat, as well it should:

Apple fanboy here but this really looks like a great unit. They really blew away the Kindle Fire.

If only they made it easier to open...

ETA: Curse you, Jaxe! ;)

Mine has arrived... But I'm on holidays this week (allegedly) and it's at the office.

I died pre-download most of the Baen Free Library so that I'll have it ready when I pick up my new toy on Monday. Thinking of buying their entire back catalogue a month or two at a time...

:o

I've just found an email from Google in my Junk email folder received on the 19th (day before I made the above post), it is just a form email but it did address my question about the status of my order. So not as much bad CS as PBKAC.

And had my delivery email notice - due to be delivered today...

I just got my item shipped email this morning. 2-Day shipping and the delivery date is listed as July 30th. Interesting math, but honestly I don't know if I have the energy to sit on hold for an hour and complain enough to get it escalated for a refund.

Looking forward to it though, nice to have a date at least. Let us know how your turns out!

Didn't get much chance to play with it yesterday, but using it today (posting from it now) standing up a lot and its really nice to hold not to heavy and can drop a lot single handed. But for me I think it's probably a luxury item because I already have a Galaxy Note that doesn't have a much smaller screen :-)

Well if you have an extra tablet just laying around like that ...
