How Dangerous is 9/11 Truth?

A recent post about 9/11 conspiracy motivated vandalism reminded me of this issue. The idea that 9/11 conspiracy beliefs have a danger that goes beyond their stupidity is an issue that comes up from time to time. It is the general interpretation given to a paper written by Obama adviser Cass Sunstein.

Attacks on the State
One of the frequent comparisons you see in the discussion of the dangers of conspiracy theory is one with Timothy McVeigh and the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. I think this is incorrect. While it is true that McVeigh had strong beliefs about conspiracies, he was not part of an organization that drove him toward murder. There have always been disturbed individuals who murder and while McVeigh does not seem like a typical serial killer, his murders were not part of any realistic attempt to overthrow the government of the USA.

For a model of what I mean, we have to look outside the USA. There have been numerous attempts, primarily by crime gangs, to overthrow legitimate governments. In Colombia, the legitimate state was threatened by Pablo Escobar and his Medellín Cartel. At one point, Escobar was at open war with a US-backed government in a struggle that killed at least 30 judges and 457 policemen, as well as perhaps thousands of others. In Italy, a struggle with organized crime gangs killed hundreds of judges, politicians and police.

These were organized and realistic attempts to overthrow the state. Timothy McVeigh had no such organization. He was a lone criminal hurling insults at the government.

The only organizations that I know of that that have launched organized and realistic attacks on a legitimate Western government have been religious groups. Here I mean the Aum Shinrikyo in Japan and followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The Aum are the Japanese group that launched a sarin attack in the Tokyo subway. In fact, Aum was an anti-semetic conspiracy group.

The Rajneeshe were a new age religious cult that established communes in Oregon to promote the teachings of their guru. Ma Anand Sheela and others in the group actually launched a bioterror attack on residents around their commune in an attempt to influence an election. In addition, the group had plans to assassinate prosecutors and had actually armed themselves in an attempt to carry this out. Whether significant or or not, Rajneeshee leaders have also been documented making anti-semetic remarks and joking about the Holocaust.

The Difference: the armed loner versus an organization
The significant difference between the Rajneeshee and Aum from McVeigh is that they acted as groups. They were able to take individuals who would have otherwise been productive citizens and make them into killers for their cause. They were able to do this because they had access to a moral philosophy that allowed their members to label outsiders as less human. There are lots of other reasons. Aum was a violent group using physical discipline and threats long before the world knew about them. But my point is that they are different from someone like McVeigh.

When Aum was initially developed, it was a meditation group. It attracted a wide range of members including some very well-educated members. It was these people who made it possible for Aum to develop the kind of weapons that had previously only been used by legitimate governments - and a splinter group of the followers of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. But initially, there was nothing threatening about the group.

So When Do They Turn Violent?

Both Rajneeshee and Aum turned violent when their attempts to promote their 'higher moral philosophy' ran into a lack of interest and cooperation. The Aum had been murdering disgruntled members for some time, but they really went wild following a failed attempt to elect members of their group to the House of Representatives. This is when they started working on gas weapons and planning mass attacks on Japanese citizens.

The followers of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh who launched a bioterror attack on The Dalles, Oregon were in a similar predicament. They had attempted a takeover of Dalles by importing homeless people so they could win an election that would result in a rezoning and construction of a new commune. Following legislative changes that made this impossible, the Rajneeshee feared they could not win the election. In an attempt to debilitate enough of the registered voters in Dalles, they poisoned the salad bar in 8 restaurants in the town. This group also developed plans to assassinate US attorney.

What's this got to do with 9/11 Truth?
Maybe nothing. But my fear is that as advocates for a 9/11 Truth grow more and more desperate, they are more and more likely to do something crazy to promote their position. These are people who think they stand on some moral high ground. They don't just oppose the war in the Middle East. Oh no. They have the right reason for opposing it. It's not because these kinds of wars are hard to win and Bush had pathetic advise on how to handle the situation. Oh no. It's because Muslims would never do bad things to people and Bush had to make this up so he could get all that oil he wanted.

But now, no one cares anymore. There is no attempt to try Bush or Cheney or Larry Silverstein or Ryan Mackey or any of those traitors manning the walls of the JREF. They can't get anyone out to their demonstration. They can't even get people to sign a petition anymore. No one cares. So what do you do if spent a good portion of the last decade stigmatized yourself as a crazy 9/11 nut? And now all you get is embarrassing laughs, even from the friends who used to act like they thought you might have something.

One thing you might do is go vandalize 9/11 memorials. Another thing you might do is picket private memorial parties for victims and their families because we know they're all actors touring the country as victims. You might get violent...really, really violent...and hurt someone. There have been shootings and other attacks by people who believed in 9/11 conspiracy, although that was not the main motive for their violence. What are the believers in a vicsim going to do as they get older and older? I worry they will become really dangerous.

One thing that's always struck me about the truthers in general is exactly how passive they are, when you stop to think about what it is they think they're fighting against. They are convinced that the US government is a corrupt tool of the NWO, and is engaged in ongoing conspiracies to engage in wars abroad, and promote a police sate at home, and yet, more than 10 years later, they still haven't taken any collective steps towards fighting the NWO, other than their constant bleating on the Internet.

You mention Aum Shinrikyo as an example of a group that evolved into a violent terrorist organization. Compare their history to that of the truthers:

In 1990, Asahara and 24 other members stood unsuccessfully for the General Elections for the House of Representatives under the banner of Shinri-tō (Supreme Truth Party). Asahara made a couple of appearances on TV talk shows in 1991, however at this time the attitude of the cult's doctrine against society started to grow in hostility. In 1992 Aum's "Construction Minister" Kiyohide Hayakawa published a treatise called Principles of a Citizen's Utopia which has been described as a "declaration of war" against Japan's constitution and civil institutions. At the same time, Hayakawa started to make frequent visits to Russia to acquire military hardware, including AK74s, a MIL Mi-17 military helicopter, and reportedly an attempt to acquire components for a nuclear bomb.[8]

The cult is known to have considered assassinations of several individuals critical of the cult, such as the heads of Buddhist sects Soka Gakkai and The Institute for Research in Human Happiness and the attempted assassination of the controversial cartoonist Yoshinori Kobayashi in 1993.[citation needed]

At the end of 1993, the cult started secretly manufacturing the nerve agent sarin and later VX gas. They also attempted to manufacture 1000 automatic rifles but only managed to make one.[13] Aum tested their sarin on sheep at Banjawarn station, a remote pastoral property in Western Australia, killing 29 sheep. Both sarin and VX were then used in several assassinations (and attempts) over 1994–1995.[citation needed] Most notably, on the night of 27 June 1994, the cult carried out a chemical weapons attack against civilians when they released sarin in the central Japanese city of Matsumoto, Nagano. This Matsumoto incident killed eight and harmed 200 more. However, police investigations focused only on an innocent local resident and failed to implicate the cult.[citation needed]

In February 1995, several cult members kidnapped Kiyoshi Kariya, a 69-year old brother of a member who had escaped, from a Tokyo street and took him to one of their compounds at Kamikuishiki near Mount Fuji, where he was killed and his body destroyed in a microwave-powered incinerator before being disposed of in Lake Kawaguchi.[citation needed] Before Kariya was abducted, he had been receiving threatening phone calls demanding to know the whereabouts of his sister, and he had left a note saying, "If I disappear, I was abducted by Aum Shinrikyo".

Police made plans to simultaneously raid cult facilities across Japan in March 1995.[citation needed]

1995 Tokyo sarin gas attacks and related incidents

On the morning of 20 March 1995, Aum members released sarin in a co-ordinated attack on five trains in the Tokyo subway system, killing 13 commuters, seriously injuring 54 and affecting 980 more.

So, within about 5 years of their failed election attempts, they had conceived of an attack plan, purchased weapons, developed and tested their own weapons in-house, and then actually carried out multiple, coordinated attacks. We have never seen that kind of persistent, competent, disciplined action from any truther organization.

And when you look at the losers who make up their rank-and-file, and the fraudsters who make up their leadership, I don't expect we ever will.

This is true. The Aum had another advantage that under post-War Japanese law, registered religious groups were very difficult for the police to monitor. They were aware of this and thus were able to build weapons and terrorize membership without the same police monitoring that organized crime gangs experience.

But in fact, you are right. Truth stuff is enormously passive considering what they claim they care about. I suspect this is because most of these people don't know each other in the real world. Until recently, almost all the ones who did know each other were through contacts arranged through that white-collar criminal Luke Rudkowski.

The September Clues guys seem to know each other in the real world and there are more attempts now for Truthers to meet each other through their 'hearings'. I suspect this is a response to their failure to mobilize a more general action. But it is possible that I'm right about their mobilization but you are still correct that they're so passive about it, they end up painting signs and handing out offensive literature, and that's as far as they can get.

They're far too passive to pose a legitimate physical threat. Each and every truther on JREF are too chicken(bleep!) to even respond to a post on the internet.

There's just no way they'd actually try to GET TO the real world, much less do anything when they get there.

But that's why I have stressed many times that the Truthers here don't represent anything. I stated once before that none of those involved in armed attacks in the USA who believed in a 9/11 conspiracy have ever been on the JREF.
I keep reading on the JREF that 911 conspiracy is dead - or something like that. this is ridiculous. There are thousands and thousands of Americans and others who really truly accept that the US government exploded the WTC with thermite or the Death Star or with some exotic technology that only the Reptoids really control. They just don't have anything to do with the kind of 911 conspiracy-thing that JREF deals with. Those nut bars who attacked the Holocaust Museum, crashed a plane into the IRS building, and attacked the school board meeting in Florida were babbling about a 911 conspiracy. Has anyone ever seem them on 911 Lies? Of course not. They found about it on some Right Wing forum or through Facebook or just hanging out at the local Ron Paul office. The idea of this 911 conspiracy-thing does not travel through Left Wing counterculture networks anymore. It travels exclusively through Right Wing networks linking it with fluoride and the attack on home gardening.

The really dangerous Truthers are the right-wing Christian types and they NEVER come here. As much as they've heard about it, they don't even care about the JREF. There's Harry Link who broadcasts on Free Think Radio who is trying to build links between his revolution against the NWO and Oathkeepers. But Harry got his start as 9/11 Truther and he still is one. It's possible that if that Black guy in the White House gets kicked out later this year, Harry might discover the NWO isn't as big a problem as he thought - who knows. But Harry is a gun-totin' dangerous guy and he's hooked with Craig Fitzgerald (if Craig's still alive) who's a member of the John Birch Society and tribal anarchy groups that are a cover for neo-nazi skinhead groups. The kind of Truthers we get here are the kind living in mom's basement who think they're striking a blow for liberty by calling Ryan Mackay some mean names. Harry thinks he's striking a blow for the might White Man when he buys new guns and makes contacts with police and military who agree with him that the surest sign of the NWO and their attack on 9/11 is that you don't have to be White to be the Presidednt.

I'm more fearful of my vacuum cleaner becoming sentient and violently attempting to suck my socks off my feet than I am of the Truth Movement...

I've said before that 9/11 twooferism is basically treason as a casual indoor sport. The greatest danger from twoofers is that one of them, or someone influenced by them could be that one guy in the right place at the right time to witness the preparation or early stages of an attack by a real terrorist group only not to report it to the proper authorities because they think its the government itself setting up a "false flag". Or possibly, some twoofer propaganda influenced soldier or serviceman might commit some form of dereliction of duty resulting in additional casualties on our side in an engagement.

Essentially, the twoofers are a small hole in our defenses that wants to become bigger but is unlikely to because, well... frankly, they're idiots and nearly everyone knows it.

The other big danger I see from them is the harm they do to themselves. The story of Jason Gerhard bothers me. Gerhard was a member of "We Are Change" who got caught smuggling volatile chemicals to some people who talked a big game about how they wanted to use them and thrown into prison for his antics. Apparently not knowing when to quit, Gerhard had a hissy fit, pooped his panties in front of the judge at his sentencing and managed to get his sentence more than doubled from 7 to 20 years.

Gerhard scares me because I used to be that kid. I got lucky and received my wake up call from conspiracism before I did something that stupid. But it could have easily ended up going he other way for me. To be forced to sit and watch your youth slowly drip away over 20 years in a jail cell is a thought that gives me nightmares. A two minute temper tantrum in a courtroom is all it took for gerhard to destroy his whole life.

The aforementioned example of Aum Shinrikyo is a good, but I think an extraordinary example of how far a small, determined and well organized group can get but unless such a group has the support and funding of a nation-state like Hamas and Hezbollah get from Iran and Syria, they are unlikely to get that far.

I agree with this sentiment.

In addition, most of them are very angry at something. Most don't really know who or what they are angry about. It is quite possible that one or more of them will snap one day and commit a violent act because of the intense anger.. I think this is more likely than the average person in the society at large.

On the other hand, the greater number of them have become addicted to being an "Internet Junklie" and they are unable to let it go. Most are very ignorant of reality and don't even want to discuss anything related to reality at all... Once this group grows-up perhaps they will eventually become productive citizens, raise a family and turn out to be normal people... Who really knows for sure... It's all speculation...

I don't think the problem is the Truthers we see and debate with, I think that we have to worry about folks at the periphery. McVeigh, the guy at the National Holocaust Museum, the Pentagon shooter, all were nut jobs who picked up the CT vibe around them and the nexus of that with a violent streak led to them taking action. McVeigh is a particularly thorny case, because he had a specific government hatred based on what he was getting from his fellow militia members. Although many of them were hardcore Christians, from what I read McVeigh was not.
Therefore I think the problem in part is not necessarily the Truth movement die hards, but the general dehumanizing of The Government or The Jews that they create. Therefore it may help those prone to violence to see people in the government or Jews as non-human and reduce inhibitions against killing them.

Most twofers (those that dont outgrow it after few months) are too disorganized and paranoid to form an effective group.

Just have to look at number of "theories" proposed by the twofer community - everything from Bush/Cheney planting bombs on a midnight foray to nuclear bombs in the basement to death rays from above.

Also look at just how they treat anyone who fails to buy in to their own personal conspracy - calls of shill, disinformation agent, gubmint stooge, false flags are hurled
at those who differ Witness twofer forums where anyone who post a dissenting opinion
is quickly silenced

The other cults (Aum/Rajneeshee) were able to attract a number of wealthy (remember
all the Rolls Royces bought for Bhagawan) and talented individuals who provided the
money and expertise to create sarin and grow salmonella

Most twofers are of the mommys basement dwelling stoner/slackers

Danger here is the Jared Lee Loughner scenario - where mentally ill (some of the more extreme twofers seem to exhibit signs of a mental disorder) goes off the deep end and
lashes out

Already seen this in few cases ie. Twofer suffering from mental disorder stabbed father
Jared Lee Loughner who obessed over Zeitgeist before shooting rampage

It is true that most Truthers are incredibly disorganized. Once again, the world of JREF Truthers is but a fraction of the microcosm of 9/11 conspiracy. SOT discussed the story of Jason Gerhard, but there are other We Are Changers with similar stories. Bruno Bruhwile is another example. There are some others, but I don't follow this very closely anymore.

9/11 Truth is like a lightening rod for anyone looking to do dangerous things. If I were a political organizer looking for people ready to swayed into badness, this is where I would go. And in fact, there are people following this recipe. Gary Franchie is a right-wing political activist who talks about chemtrails and FEMA camps are for killing citizens. He is a close friend of We Are Change and until recently, a frequent guest at their events.

The Aum Shinrikyo was a meditation study group until Shoko Asahara started manhandling his devotees. He was able to do this and Aum able to start accumulating weapons because Japan has special laws protecting religious organizations from police surveillance. As a result, Aum became far more dangerous far more quickly than any criminal gang in Japanese history. You could say that because of this lack of official surveillance, religious groups - or at least some of them - became attractive points for dangerous people. This aspect of the problem might be compared to the Summer of Love as it began to attract predatory elements, such as Charles Manson.

I think that in this light, it is the naive malleability of Truthers that makes them dangerous. The danger exists in much the same fashion as it did for many of the top Aum scientists who could otherwise have been members of legitimate religious groups. They were made into dangerous people in much the same way as some Rajneeshee or perhaps even members of Manson's group.

Aum still exists today. There continue to be very wealthy with thousands of followers. I suspect most of them are previous members who are so stigmatized, they can't reenter normal society.

We used to call these folks armchair revolutionaries. For most of them it's a fantasy that they won't admit is a fantasy. As mentioned, they believe it as an abstract - a spectator sport or debate topic. They bandy about the terms "murderer" and "traitor" the way that politicos throw out "nazi" and "communist".

If either of these groups (truthers or politicos) really and truly believed that their opponents/targets were "traitors", "murderers", "nazis" or "communists", wouldn't they be doing more than posting on the internet and listening to talk radio? Look at Aum Shinrikyo and on U.S. shores the Weather Underground. Within a couple of years of believing that they were fighting a war for a cause, both groups went to violence. The SLA? Same situation, I believe. If you truly believe that you're in the right or that God or The Gods are on your side and that the current powers that be are evil and trying to harm everyone and/or enslave the population, wouldn't you actually commit everything to stopping them?

And let's give the TM a break. I don't think any of the violent perps who've popped up in the past few years were exclusively 911 Truth supporters. They were catchall conspiradroids and the debunking community went through everything they'd ever said to find some tidbits on 911 so we could enjoy saying, "See? I told you they were going to go violent!" They were probably all also supporters of Save The Redwoods.

Speaking as a parent, what concerns me most is truthers "teaching" their children that 9/11 was an inside job.

Batcrap crazy Andrew Johnson boasts of this on his website.

I am married and have 2 children who are now 10 and 12 years old - and they both now know 9/11 was an Inside Job (thanks in part to this song) and my daughter knows the difference between Chemtrails and Contrails.

A youtoob video of Andrew spewing his insane ideas has his daughter sat right next to him. I can't seem to find it... so no linky.

This is just screwed up IMO, pushing such insanity on young minds.

We've heard a number of stories of the lone truther nut who has committed violence.

http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/tags.php?tag=truther+violence

But that's it: They're lone nuts, and nuts being the operative word. Any sort of delusion could tip them over the edge.

But 9/11 Truth is still a delusion, which exists, which could send someone vulnerable over the edge.

It's not completely harmless as an ideology.

I think it is one of the less dangerous CT's that are out there. the most dangerous one would be AGW / IPCC CT's.

Or possibly, some twoofer propaganda influenced soldier or serviceman might commit some form of dereliction of duty resulting in additional casualties on our side in an engagement.

I don't have any real data, but I suspect the instances of trutherism in the armed forces would be lower than in the 'general population', as the soldiers get get see the incompetence of the DoD and government first hand. Not to mention the paper-trail generated doing everything. Then again, truthers are not know for their rationality.

Also, the only truther I know in real life is someone who just spends his days inside, watching 'documentaries', 'learning' and posting stuff on Facebook. The only danger I see from this sort of trutherism is that maybe his child will buy into that stuff as well.

Neither scenario I proposed is very likely, be it the rogue serviceman or civilian who could have stopped an attack.

Also, the only truther I know in real life is someone who just spends his days inside, watching 'documentaries', 'learning' and posting stuff on Facebook. The only danger I see from this sort of trutherism is that maybe his child will buy into that stuff as well.

His child could also be in danger of malnutrition and neglect. Tell the treasonous mental midget to get off his lazy ass and get a job.

You can read all sorts of "patriot" rants in the comment section of prison planet "news" stories, and much of it's pretty violent rhetoric.

For Scott, there were armed groups that made the transition from bragging and agitating to action. These are the first two that come to mind:

The Order:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Order_(group)

The S.L.A.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbionese_Liberation_Army

Yes, this is what I mean.

The transition being silly to being dangerous is not clear. The Aum Shinrikyo became dangerous one person in the group - Shoko Asahara - saw violence as the solution to the group's problems. Without his influence, Aum would have remained a humorous group of meditating people people. It's possible that without Robert Mathews, The Order would have remained petty criminals.

If I had to pick a naive, malleable group of people that could be turned into a crime gang, I don't think I could better than some of the conspiracy Truthers that I know from Facebook.
