I just watched the 4 Corners report on Qantas Flight 32, which had the catastrophic engine failure while flying out of Singapore in 2010 that nearly brought down the plane.

Here it is for anyone who missed it and friends abroad.

A big thumbs up to the pilots and crew.

I have never heard him say a thing that gave the impression that he is anything but an all around top bloke. Humility is one of the first things I thought of and then he goes and talks about how humbled he was in receiving the award and it's genuine.

Good to see.

I recall how upset he was when he got all that flack for Stairway To Heaven He even mentioned that Page and Plant loved his version.........did no good with some elements of the great unwashed.

He is a living reminder of how to always stay grounded, and thankful for any success you may have in life

2012 Transit of Venus
Don't miss this Australian Geographic guide to the best places in Australia and New Zealand to see it.

Clicky!

And especially don't miss the transit itself. Unless you're an immortal Pharaoh you prolly won't be here for the next one in 2117.

Well all Australians should have an affinity for this event - It was Cook's 1769 expedition to Tahiti to measure the transit that lead to his discoveries of the Australian East coast.

Unfortunately the black drop effect seen during such transits pretty much invalidated any value Cook's or other observations

I think the Admiralty was pretty happy, nonetheless. The Venus thing was largely a cover for Cook's real (secret) mission to search for Terra Australis Incognita anyway, and that turned out rather splendidly.

I believe it was more opportunity, however I am not sure where I read it - possibly Cook's biography - But the Royal Society was split over how a search for the southern land should be conducted, there was two competing factions.

They lobbied for funds to do the Tahiti trip, and Cook was their choice because of his attention to detail and maths skills, and probably because he was the only one who could put up with Banks for that amount of time :)

Anyway when the Admiralty heard about the composition of the crew and Cooks abilities they took a chance and sent him to the Western Pacific. Which if things are to be believed Cook did not read his orders till after the transit

Yeah I agree with your summation, but it is a direct quote so maybe the Carlton person saying it...simply slipped up

Yes, that is certainly another strong option. Though "going stroppo" would well describe Eddies reaction to the scenario.
